Yeah, not to get this thread off-topic (which is what I'm doing...but whatever) Zunni has done a very good job keeping I&S clean.
And Kabab, you might as well give up, you have forum moderators disagreeing with you, and soon this will devolve into a massive flamefest. We don't want that, right?
It may happen in NS2. Wait a year or two...or three and find out.

Id like to see ns have a bit more atmosphere, but i dont want to see levels reduced to photographic dark rooms devoid of any light. Perhaps a few rooms of diminshed light but have the majority of rooms corridors at their current light levels. I wouldnt want a game like AvP because i think this is totally unrealisitc.
If i was entering an alien infested space ship the first thing id bring is big mother f***n halogen stadium lights. But you cant carry these with you everywhere so obviously some rooms would be dark.
Actually this thread just gave me and idea im gonna go post it in the ideas forum. How about having a few rooms that are intiialy really dark or on emergency power but the player can weld a control pannel to get light into these rooms etc.
Conversley how about if aliens can munch through a control pannel (like welding backwards) and cut power to certain parts of the map making doors/ lifts not work lights turn off and go onto emergency power (flashing red light etc).
but marines can restore power by re-welding the control pannel or something?
It's kind of hard to create an immersive game with a 14 year old screaming abuse at you over the mic. If you want atmosphere, stick with single player.
3rd person animations. So your friend could see you balancing your knife on your finger (and other cool things obviously). It's kinda weird having soldiers who don't banter, I mean there's professional and there's <i>I only understand two commands "Kill" and "Cap more res nodes"</i>
As the person above me so eloquently stated, the players don't really seem to want atmosphere. They seem to want to win and yell at their team. I never hear anyone moan about this in-game.

Try watching Alien without the music or sound... it isnt scare at all.
The gore does not make the game scary, the sound does. <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd--> combination of many things
that's what movie directors/ game designers / and the like decide on
i remember 1.04 eclipse as being much more atmospheric due to lighting, skylights etc than 2.0 or current b5, especially 2.0 as that lacked even the skylights
NS Maps aren't lacking these atmospheric effects because of lazy/uninterested mappers. They lack effects because of entity limits. Entities are used to create most of the aforementioned effects, and complicated effects can require the use of multiple entities. However, many game objects (buildings, nodes, elevators, doors, etc.) also use entities to function. When the entity count grows too large, the game lags and can become unstable. These effects were sacrificed for to make the game more stable.
First of all...Doom 3 can go to a bottomless pit with it's "atmosphere"...
Want real atmosphere? Play System Shock 2 with headphones and relatively high volume. Now that is a game that will scare you s**tless...and it doesn't even use "darkness" or "suprise attacks" (mostly) as a scarefactor...
As for NS, it's a multiplayer game...I sincerely doubt that any multiplayer game can get the same atmosphere and effect as a single player game.
The only way *I* think that atmosphere could be "boosted" however is if the maps were like at LEAST 5 times larger, filled with different ambient sounds, certain effects that activate at random (broken pipes releasing gas at random intervals with a huge "hiss") etc...
Reason for size would be to give the marines in particular the sense of being VERY far away from safety and all. But of course...5x larger maps will never happen for several obvious reasons <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
i haven't really tried playing ss2 through again but i can't help wondering if it wasn't a function of sleep deprivation and playing alone in the dark in the middle of the night, rather than actual scariness
no matter the reason, if you were one of those scared by the ring, i was almost as scared as that, constantly through ss2... yet i continued to play it alone in the dark in the middle of the night, while exceedingly tired
of course it's old now.. there are graphical updates by fans, the screenies look good, but i haven't tried them

On ns_hera, you know the walkway between maintenance and marine start? Yeah, thats what I'm talking about.
The lights flash on and off... it's pretty cool.
Just give NS spooky music and effects, it'll be scary enuff.

hopefully ec makes a grand return
This post better explains why there is an entity limit on NS maps.
