Need help with linux
Hi, i recently setup a 13man ns server with metamod, amx mod x and lerk lift. I run two servers off the same comp unfortunately. One is a cs 1.6 server with lots of modifications and a ns server of course. It is a:
2.2ghz celeron
512ram (doubt its ddr)
120gb 7200rpm hd
intel chipset
900kb upload speed from cable provider (Me and my neighbor share the connection)

I don't know what is going on but on ns maps it will always crash. We have done some crazy things and some not so crazy things. We never really play your "average" game. The admins usually do amx_rcon sv_cheats 1 and then enable bigdig. But even without it would still crash. And i would also get high pings around my server. I play off a comp thats on the lan and it would get pings of 90 while others get 200 yet they have very little or no lag. Usually there would be 6ppl in the server. It would also usually freeze at random points. We do use an excessive amount of turrents though (25 on siege007)(100 of mcs ocs and dcs in all). I was wondering what is wrong and what should be the limit of my server with my current setup. And is there a way to log out of linux to use less cpu? And would it do anybetter on this setup:

1.47ghz amd 1700+
512 ddr ram
120gb hd
nvidia chipset

Wow, such a loaded message, so many questions...

I'll take them one at a time:

    1. When you say "log out" of linux I'm going to assume you have a graphical desktop open that you'd like to kill. In most cases you can issue the command "/etc/init.d/gdm stop" as root in order to stop the graphical desktop which will then drop you to console. If you are unfamiliar with running servers at a command line try checking out my server guide in my sig.

    2. Running two CPU intensive games on a celeron processor may be too much for the poor CPU. A struggling CPU will have a bad effet on both HLDS processes. Try just running one game and see if that helps.

    3. 90KB may not be enough bandwidth if both games are going at once. You didn't mention what size your CS server is so I can't really judge for certain. Again, try running only one server.

    4. If you are running a residential gateway/router the CPU on that might be getting choked with so many forwarded NAT connections. This is just a guess though, I don't know if you actually have a router on this system or if your linux box IS the router.

    5. My main server for a long time was an Athlon 1900+ CPU running Redhat 7.3. A full 14 player server would use about 20-30% of the CPU on an NS map and 5-10% on a combat map. I'm not sure if one system would be better then the other.

Hopefully that helps somewhat. Instinct tells me that the CPU is suffering under load, try just running one server at a time and see if that helps improve the quality of your game.
