Any clues as to why DNS is failing in two completely different places ??

other than that there is probably nothing you can do but waiting until the dns is running again
What happens if you do a whois followed by a lookup on the name servers?
As for the /etc/hosts, well thats simple, but what do you recommend I put in there?

The 3 NS domains that I know about are
natural-selection.org
naturalselection.com
unknownworlds.com
All 3 have the same pair of Name Servers
NS1.SERVERMATRIX.COM
NS2.SERVERMATRIX.COM
I had one failure getting the whois info for naturalselection.com - connection refused to the registars whois server
The IP for the 3 www subdomains is 67.18.232.194
