WHAT SHOULD I GET?
First tech related problem since forums reopened w00t!!

ok, i have just got a new video card (6600 gt) but a mother board that runs in 2x bus speed, how much performance am i losing by useing a outdated board as that

my computer is as follows

biostar m7vib mobo
amd xp 2000
512 mb ddr 2700 by kingston
256 mb ddr 2100 by crap company off brand
audigy xgamer (meh)

My questions are what should i get if i decided to replace it
should i get more ram (keep the 512 of ddr 2700)
should i/how do i reformat my hard drive when putting 'new system together"?
can i use my old systems windows xp? should i? (not a real version of windows xp, just a System Max reformat cd that reinstalls windows)

as always, thx

AGP 2x is definitely too slow for a 6600GT, but I just looked that board up and it's a 4X.

I'm currently running a Radeon 9500 Pro on a 4X AGP bus and there aren't any noticeable video bottlenecks, so you should be able to make the 6600GT work; but if you want a new board, I just slapped together a budget Socket A system with this at the heart, and it's nice and stable (and cheap to boot!).

edit: sorry to disappoint you with a real IT guy, coldnite

Change your AGP speed through Bios.

If you are able you get a new mobo because of your curret "throw it out the window" mobo, i suggest the asus p4s800, great reliable in your case a good deal.

I got an amd socket a mobo sitting in my house that supports agpx8 doing **** all that you could have if you want.

Seriously it's taking up space and I don't want it

Dude the p4s800 is an intel socket mobo, his cpu is amd so it wouldn't work.

I think that was his point, Mullet... prodding for a switch to a slower, hotter, more expensive CPU and mobo.

Also, you'll want to clean-install XP. Even if you just use your wipe/install CD, if the new motherboard uses a different chipset, and has different options and interface devices (which, if you're switching to any other model motherboard besides the one you currently own, is a virtual certainty...) then Windows can get confused and crufted, looking for devices that no longer exist, loading drivers uselessly, crufting up, and in generally making a pain of itself.

I have a gigabyte AGP 8x dual Bios dual processor mobo with 2 processors... Of course the cheaper gigabyte model is still good too.

"Cruft"? Is that our new psuedo-swear, like Frell from Farscape?
