LAN troubles
I have a LAN party every now and then and the highlight of the party is the game of NS we play. For practical reasons before we always played NS 2.01. Never did we have any problems running the game. This time around i made everyone get steam so that we could play NS 3.0 beta 5 to hopefully solve our balance problems we would have. This lan party was rather large with 12 computers going. When we all joined up via lan game, waiting in the ready room and we all experianced horrible lag. No other HL mod that night lagged at all and we played all those with 12 people as well.(we played DoD TFC CS) So there we are with a horrible lag where all the computers would freeze for a good 2-4 seconds at times. Once we joined up our teams the lag went away for the most part, other than when alot of players were near each other again. Lag like this can not happen in a lan game if its worth while to be played. The other problem we had was everything always fast built. I'm sure this is just a matter of changing something with a console command but once again the game is not worth palying with fast build on. I tried turning tournament play on in the create game sceen but still no luck. I also tried 3 other computers to host the game same problems. Ns that night was very disapointing.

To summerize the problems
- Horrible freeze lag experianced on all computers in the lan game.
- Less serious problem of fast build always on, no matter the setting.

If for what ever reason the LAN setup matters let me know and ill post that.

sv_cheat 0 in the server config file will fix fast build

the lag was PROBABLY from bad settings, you would have to ask some one who knows more about servers then I do for the fixes

Yes, make sure sv_cheats is 0, and we ran into the problem of when someone presses escape (to change settings or something), it will freeze everyone else until they resume (I have no clue why though). So that could be one thing that makes it seem like lag.

    OK first of all:

NS is a game that needs rather high specs (for a hl mod).

So make shure that the guy who host the match has at least a gforce 3ti200, 1.6 ghz, as well as more than 512 mb ram.

The listen sever should turn aa and af off.
Make shure that you set your connection speed in the steam setting to lan/t3.
The listen server should never press esc or take a screenshot. This would result in a 2 second freeze.

Best solution would be setting up a dedicated sever. 1 ghz and 512 mb ram should be more than enough to handle 12 players.

Would the lag perhaps coincide with people opening the console? change the line "pausable 1" in your listenserver.cfg or server.cfg to "pausable 0" to disable the pausing whenever someone uses the console. You can type it ingame but it can have some confusing effects.

Thank you all for the replys. I figured the fast build was a easy console command. All the computers that ran the server were well above the requirements. Was not the escapeing, or console pause, im pretty sure although it might of been. I didnt think of settings for the connection speed. Would not having it set to lan lag NS that bad? We're talking sometimes 10 second long lag. Also what is the aa and af you speak of?
    Thanks again guys.
