How Do You Stop The Game Addiction

yea its a problem
Hmm I was wondering if anyone here had thoughts on how to stop ones self from gaming too much. If I sit down and play NS, I tend not to stop and it's become a real problem for my normal life. So I just force myself to go study or something. But then when I feel like i'm done studying, I have this urge to go back to NS.

Well, theres always going out to have a life, uninstalling games, doing things that make it less convenient (eg: log out of steam so you have to type in your pass every time). If worst comes to worst, downgrade to a 56k connection or use firewall software to block games and such.

I find that talking to people at school or doing lots of homework helps. Sure they are both temporary fixes, but my theory is that if you do that enough you will realize that you don't need games so much. Basically anything that keeps you from doing computer games will help you quit them.

WoW has helped me immensily to come off my gaming addiction.

It has a built in system where if you aren't playing, then your "rest" meter builds up, and, you gain 2x as much exp when you are rested, so you don't actually "lose" time since you will level up faster and therefore can play whenever you want to, and gaming will become a hobby once again and not a lifestyle.

If you are more then 1 person where you live, make the other person an admin account on your comp while you get yourself a normal account. Uninstall every games, that way you will always have to ask your roommate to install games and will be a real annoyance, Uninstall games everytime you quit (harsh). If you still can't do, sell your computer and only work on college computer, That will you will be less at home, more outside, more in your work and studies.

    ^^^ Dead-on.

The only way you're likely to avoid playing too much of a good thing is to set a schedule and then actually keep it. If you work full time, it's a bit easier (since your home work load is a bit more predictable), but for those of you in school you'll just have to learn how much time to leave for homework and projects.

There are entire books on the subject, so for the details I'm going to point you to the local library, which sadly requires a trip outside

Get a "significant other" - they tend to absorb a lot of playing time.

Pick up a sport of some sort - I suggest raqueball or fooseball.

    Learn to plan an instrument.

Decide to become a programmer - then game time becomes "research".

lol that game will get me addicted since i like mmorpgs >_<.
I think having my comp taken away by my parents has led to some improvement in my studies. I didn't even think about NS for the entire quarter. Problem is...I started playing Runescape and then wc3. Both got boring after I came back from winter break. But NS is the real crack (damn you devs for making a good game).

I'd suggest you get a close friend or family member to put a password on your computer during the weekend, then when your feeling strong maybe increase the time the password is on. this is by no means a quick or fool proof meathod but if your willing to give it a try I'd say thats the best way.

arg, that'd **** me off even if I asked for it to be done. Me not wanting to do something is COMPLETELY different than someone telling me that I'm not allowed. I know they'd just be following your orders, but ack - it would drive me CRAZY!

My suggestion: willpower. Just decide that you're not going to be gaming so much. Instead of gaming, eat >:) .... kidding... but seriously, stop naturally and because you want to. Be strong! I believe in you!

PS... I feel your pain, I'm weaning myself off of IRC... so far so good today. (just a pity I've replaced it with browsing the forums... I'm still working though - baby steps!)

If you want to go with the "Go Outside" suggestion, I'll have to suggest you don't start during the winter.

You'll walk outside, be all cold and say, "F this, I'm going back inside to play games." That is, unless your room is in the basement and your hands basically freeze while you're on the computer, rendering your FPS skills useless.

[Skiing is for people with skis ]

    Actual solutions:
    1. Play on a server with idiots on it...consistently. They'll **** you off, then you wont want to play as much, because you'll have a degraded impression of NS.

    2. Start working out; or set up a routine before you play (or something like that). I do it when I'm at home...except the whole part where I always injure myself in some way that prevents me from properly exercising (like fracturing my toe against a recliner chasing a dog...and stuff).

    3. Take up a new hobby. Try to learn a foreign language (okay, maybe that's not so much considered a hobby), break out the level making skills, break out the drawing pad (or start painting, generally it can be a pain to get canvases, but if you're in high school or something you could ask your art teachers...there's a reason I haven't painted in 3 years).

Anything you can manage to take an interest in will work. Personally, I have the life-goal aspiration of knowing as much as I can fit in my head. That makes it easy to take an interest in almost anything...some stuff is just too boring for me - Enviromental Biology and Jazz History spring to mind rather quickly.

    4. Sleep more...everyone loves sleep...sleep is fun.

    5. Spend time with friends and family. Consider renting movies and stuff...you know whatever's fun-ish.

...Of course, if the playing of NS isn't really hampering your grades/work/relationships I don't see a point in not playing, as it is a way to spen your free time. I've never really been addicted to anything, though...which is probably why I don't understand why I'm the only one of my immediate family that doesn't smoke.

If you need to study (or do chores, or whatever) use games as a reward. If you do 2 hours' study in the evening, then go play a game for an hour. Then study again for a couple of hours before firing up the game. Lather rinse repeat.

Just an example, and the times there I just plucked out of the air, but that kind of thing helped me out at uni. It probably helps you study too, as the game gives your brain something else to think about for a bit.

    ---

Also, remember that computers aren't just for games. For example I get just as much enjoyment from doing something productive, like doing things with graphics programs.

There are many solutions to this. Probably the best is to get someone else involved who can help you (as you can read about in the above posts). What I did to stop myself from playing too much was to just cut myself off completely. I uninstalled everything I didn't want to play. Since I'm quite lazy, I didn't go though the trouble of reinstalling them, and so I found other things to do. The more trouble you make for yourself to play games, the less likely it is that you'll play them.

If you just want to reduce the time you spend, then set a timer to go off when you want to stop. As long as you stick to the plan, then you should be ok (it would be good to have friends to help you here). Alternatively, you could get programs to log you out after a certain period of time, thus making it annoying to play for long periods of time. Of course, this would cause problems when you want to do work on your computer.

Another solution is to let your computer become so obsolete, that there won't be any games that you want to play that can run on it. This is what I'm doing (but not intentionally). However, you'll be stuck with an old computer.

Ultimately the solution is your own will power. You have to be willing to cut yourself off a bit (but I guess making this posts shows that you already are).

You should join a team sport for your school. Football is a great example, because you will be working hard after school all year round with the weightlifting during the offseason. That's what helped me quit. If you were like me, and you're weighing in age 14 170lbs (mostly all fat not muscle) foot ball is a great decision. so is wrestling and any other sport.

First of all, physically blocking yourself from the computer or "just stopping" isnt gonna change how you feel, it will just make you flustrated (in my experience anyway).

Instead of simply going 'cold turkey ' and stopping altogther. Pickup a different hobby and use that to keep yourself occupyed. I think its just a case of having something to keep yourself from becoming bored.

Start reading for example. Search for 'good book' threads in this forum's archives and check a few out. It exercises your mind, so a perfect way to get your brain in gear for school work.

I must admit, I have a video game addiction as well. My problem is, I don't drive...yet. I will drive soon, but since I can't do it now, I can't really go out and do much without asking my parents for a ride. Sure, I can say, "Hey mom, take so-and-so and I out to the movies please.", but that's no fun because I have to go when they feel like it. See, today, my parents went to the Eagles vs Vikings game and left me home for the better part of the day. I am going over to my friend's house tomorrow to work on our Graduation Project and play a little paintball.

EDIT: I think that this forum just turned into "Game-aholics Anonymous".
