What Makes It Show Damage?

when a marine unloads into a tower it says -10 -10 -10 -10 and so on, i think that is super cool because we can see how much damage we are actually doing. my best friend runs an NS server but his server doesn't do that, most servers i play on don't do that, the first server i ever joined had it (like a week ago i think) and just now i left a server that has it which claims to be 1.02 or 1.2 or whatever (the latest).

is it a cvar or is it built into the certain versions or what's goin on?

    ... its in the ded_var.txt file in the ns subdirectory anyhow. It's described as a debug variable. Yes, it's really nice to see the damage you really do. Though sometimes it gives you more information than you have a right to - like you can see how many people are around the corner when you do splash damage.

    I really wish people had never found this variable. It shows up through walls, acting as a sort of wall hack. It also reveals damage healed by DCs. I'd be happier if all servers kept this variable set to 0.

    flay should set sv_cheats to 0 in the code, it has to be set to 1 for MP_showdamage to work.

    they should only add the damage thing for buildings since then the "wallhack" wont help much will it?? and knowing if you damage the building at all is quite importatns since you have to be so close to see the buildings health.....

    i would just love to the see the damage counetr implemented for structures only ..... if possible

    in game like CS, you shoot someone, blood and sound effects are played, you usualy can tell how badly you hurt your enemy, makes some sense, but in NS the idea that you can't 'realy' tell makes it all the more frantic to shoot that 1 skulk with 2 health. helps the atmosphere of the game to leave the showdamage off. And it just seems.... wrong.

    Just make it so it's not visible through walls. That would solve the problem, eh? And it certainly doesn't seem impossible.

    It's really, really nice having some form of feedback as to whether you're hitting the enemy/how hard you're hitting them. For some reason I can't put my finger on, it's just tougher to tell in NS than other games.

    It's not just the wallhack reason..     I could've sworn I just played on a server the other day that showed damage, but ONLY if you can visually see the damage anyways. So there's none of the wallhacking/too much info issue. If you throw acid rockets and it hits someone behind the wall, I don't think that showed up...

    I asked ppl on that server how they managed this, it was apparently with a special modification available... it's even listed at the greeting message for their server, but I can't for the life of me remember the server name OR the mod name. Anyone else remember?
