Windows XP Professional x64 Edition RC1 preview is an article talking about the new 64-bit OS coming from microsoft that will let 64-bit CPU owners take full advantage of their CPU's if any 64-bit applications are ever made.

Since there isn't really a reason for desktop users to get 64-bit CPUs right now due to almost all games being 32-bit, you may be more interestested specifically in the 32-bit vs. 64-bit performance benchmarks.

The rend result? 64-bit CPU's seem to be only 2-5fps behind the 32-bit equivilant. So yes, the 64-bit cpu's handle 32-bit stuff great.

In my opinion, the article reinforces my belief that while 64-bit CPUs are good and all, and in the future will be very useful, right now its just a waste of money to get one. After all, why pay more money to get slightly less performance just on the hopes that maybe someone will make a 64-bit version?

Time will tell. Hopefully there will be 64-bit games & applications released soon and then a 32-bit to 64-bit direct comparrison can be made, so you could see just how faster 64-bit doom3 was than 32-bit doom3...

That's interesting.. It seems that it's not much right now..

I'm still not gonna get a 64-bit. In a couple of years, all this hardware will be cheap: I can wait.

I remember the transition from 16-bit to 32-bit, and all the instability and bugginess that it caused. I definitely hope we don't see that again. Still, I think the most compelling reason to go 64-bit is to use more than 4GB of RAM. Right now, Half-Life 2, on top of basic Windows 2000 services, is passing 1GB peak usage on my system. One can only imagine how mods may push it higher.

    Indeed.

And for mod developers it could be great too. Imagine 64-bit VIS and RAD that can use more than 4GB ram to compile if needbe... That'd be great. :)

I think the transition is comparable to the AGP platform moving to PCI-Express.
At the moment it does not seem like PCI-Express 16x has much more to offer than AGP 8x. But with SLI it is becoming much more interresting. The same can be said about Processors the migration to 64-bit will eventualy be more advantagious then at the moment, and the step towards dual core CPUs is a step in that direction.

I seem to remember in one of those videos with the developers with STALKER mentioning it will support 64 bit mode .

I was thinking of upgrading sometime in the near furure, but I don't think I'll go 64 bit just yet. I'll save that for a few years down the road when it's noticable. When companies like Dell, HP and the likes start making only 64 bit computers, then there will be a demand for 64 bit software and I assure you I'd be getting 64 bit when it's viable. For now, I can get power with a nice Athlon XP for a whole lot less money.

I recently got my wife an AMD64 laptop (from Compaq), and have been itching to put the 64-bit RC on it. So far the little lady has been... hesitant. But we will see who wears the pants in this family!!!!

I decided to splash out on a whole new PC....and with all the choices avaliable it was a hard decision as to what system components to get, in the end i decided on the AMD athlon FX53 processor.
I told myself that the aim of the pc would be to last for as long as possible, and because of that it would still be a good system when 64 bit software gets fully implemented.
However i know for a fact that id rather stay on a version of windows that has stability and all the bugs ironed out rather than a buggy version that might have compatability issues with other software (eg the new 64 bit version).

    What have i learned?
that i shouldnt have spent the massive amount of money on a processor that im not going to use the full capacity of for some time. i r t3h st00p1d

back to the topic, cant wait for windows to come out then i can see how fast it really can go, I can only hope that other companies will see the advantages and develop 64bit software along with it.

P.S im not new to the forums, just couldnt get my old account back
oh and im not saying my processor is bad, its absololutely amazing as it is even without 64bit support

I'll prolly think about a 64bit cpu towards the end of the year, for now I'm gonna just invest in a Athlon XP 3200 to replace my 2200 and maybe a new GFX card.
