first map ever.
i know i know, this is NS, not CS. but i got into mapping for hl2, and this is the first thing ive done and i would like some critique

none of these pictures have been brightened up, though some of them probably need it.

alot of these areas have had slight changes since i took these pictures.

den all these lights can be shot out leaving only the light from the fire and the skylights. also along the left side there are large windows and blinds hanging down over them, when you shoot the blinds they swing back in forth and stuff. i think it looks pretty neat.

there are still 3 more bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, the attic, and alot of work outside to do. i plan on making it possible to get on the roof and drop in through the skylights, and get into the attic from the roof and from their get into the house.

the plan is for this to be a hostage map.

ugh... CS.. i'm sorry, but I had to say it.. I really did.. I would say it's too boxy, but I guess I can't really say that about a house now can I? It looks good, and I like the room in the 0011 picture, but you should work on the ceiling lights a little.

Look around your own house? are all the lights fixed in the center ceiling? and are the cieling lights the only light sourses you have in every room?

Most of those rooms look unlivably dark and colorless.

Other than that, and the fact that almost every structure is increadibly blocky it looks pretty friggin good, but then again sourse maps just kind of do.

1: uhh.. that hallway seems too wide. And those door frames look weird on the inside texture. Most door frames aren't that wide, so you don't notice what it is behind it, but it's usually just plain wood.
2: alright. fairly bland in the walls and lighting, but alright. Needs lamps.
3: uhg. please, is that glass blue? i'm guessing most glass panes like that are not. it looks pretty bad anyway. just make it regular white. also, would a bathroom really have wood panel walls? doubtful. probably tile.
4: again. way too bland overall. put some nice lamps in there instead of the overhead... and put some pictures on the walls please. it feels simply drab.
5: the room has stuff in it, but it needs better lighting (again). put some lights sunk into the ceiling. And some lighting under the cabinets. that microwave feels really weird too. Nice touch with the melon.
6: something outside so it doesn't feel so empty, but you've already said you're working on that.
7: if this is a storage room or something similar, then it's fine.
8:ahhhhh something interesting. much better than most of the other pics. feels a little empty though. More furniture, and probably centered around the fire. i know in my house i would have the furniture centered on the fireplace.
9: bring this up to the level of the second pic.
10: odd looking furnace...
11: err... nothing to comment on i guess. but i would expect a large house to have a finished basement. and that light fixture is backwards btw.
12/13: as cool as that idea is, most carpets i've seen don't break apart... just have the rug folded over already.
14: er.... shouldn't that be wood flooring to continue the theme? that doesn't look like the right kind of tile for a house.
15: the door idea is cool, but the surrounding area is missing details. Closet? Coat rack? Rug? Something.

Overall the lighting is awefully bland. Most real-world rooms don't simply contain an overhead light, they have plent of lamps scattered around the house. Rid yourself of the ugly overhead lights and add several smaller lamps, of the slightly yellowish variety, as that is what most people use, behind lamp shades and such. There's also a lot of flat walls with nothing on them to make them look pretty. There are a few pictures, but you should put a few more in, or make the textures for the walls in some of the rooms a nice wallpaper. I don't know if mirrors have been added in yet, but if they have you should put one in the bathroom, and one or two around the house in important rooms (those should be small). Put some rugs and carpet around the house too. Almost all of my house is carpetted or has rugs, with the exception of the kitchen (even the bathroom has some rugs to stand on).

It's a good start, but needs a lot of polish. I hope my critique didn't come off too hard, but rather that it encourages you to work on it more. Good luck with it.

well this house is made pretty closely to my house. we mostly do have ceiling lights, except in a room or 2 where there are desk lamps. and all of these screenshots are dark because i havent brightened them up yet. ingame they are brighter, but when i take a screenshot they are really dark.

belgarion:

1: our hallway is pretty wide, about as wide as it is here. 2 people can comfortably walk side by side in it. on the doors, good point, i plan on working on the doors when i get to them, changing the frames and adding handles.

2:good point on the walls and lighting, but this is all made with what models have been given to me. i have added in 10 or so custom textures, but i cant find many custom textures that fit nicely anyways. im just trying to make do with what i have.

3:in my parents bathroom there used to be glass doors around the bathtub exactlylike that. and i forgot to mention, i did make a change to that so around the bathtub the walls are tile, but the walls are wood in other parts of the bathroom.

4:that room in my house is mainly just the "pretty room" we dont go in there much or anything, stuff is in there just to look nice. i would add more nice stuff, but once again, making do with what i have.

5:i wanted to do several things that i couldnt with the kitchen, and out of all the things i tried this is the best i got. i might go back and add some lights under the cabinets and such, thats a good idea.

6:outside ive done close to absolutely nothing, but i dont have many ideas on what to put outside except for some trees. thats why im leaving it for last.

7:glad you like it

8:centered around the fireplace? why do that when you have a TV to center it all around?

9:im still working on this room a bit, might try to make a few pictures because i feel this room needs it bad.

10:furnaces are hard:P

11:its not really a basement, more of a crawlspace. i just made it tall enough to walk in and added lights so you could/would actually go into it.

12/13:i wanted to have it look ripped, but i couldnt figure out a way to do this. if anyone could help me with it i would be very happy.
i thought about having the carpet folded over, but i didnt want the vent to be so obvious.

14:this is more of the main entrance to the house, i felt that tile flooring worked better to serve that purpose than wood. plus its more that way in my house.

15: there isnt really a way to add in mirrors, but i have an acceptable substitute for it, which i might put here in this area.

thanks for the feedback, ill try and add in what i can.

I love how you disguised the cc as a shower, but where's the hive room?

No seriously, I think it looks great. It's a nice house, but it doesn't look like someone's living in it, that's all. So drab and everything, it looks abandoned and dusty. That'd be great, except the fireplace and furnace are still running....I don't know what to make of it

thats a good point, but terrorists need warmth too dont they? ill try and work on making it look nicer, only problem is most textures that fit are from hl2, and most of those textures that are indoor are mostly broken down, disrepaired looking.
