Do I Know You?

Non-US citizens
In the spirit of international cooperation I have to ask a question.

For those of you who are not US citizens or if you are a permanent resident alien. Do any of you feel that you would fall into this catagory with respect to me:

Close and continuing relationship with feelings of kinship, loyalty or obligation.

An odd question to be sure but it is one that I need to ask. Personally I would have to say it can be close but no as I don't even know your real names but I have to be sure.

So if I undetstood correctly, you asked wether I respect/feel kinship towards you?

No. To me you're just a bouncy cuddly avatar.

It's hard to actually feel a lot for someone you've never met.
I mean, I can only assume you gender, race, voice and so on.

You're kind of like a character in a book.
Some description is given, but a lot of it is left to the imagination.

How much I 'link up' with people net or otherwise is pretty much based on how much I interact with them and remember them... and in your case? uh.

    You had the edgemaster as your avi once didn't you? ^^;

Location doesn't mean much to me outside of the potential for raiding your house while you're out ^~

But I wanted to chime in and say that it's odd to me that you can have those 'feelings' towards "strangers".... I never would have guessed that this was normal... but now I liken it to a child having a pen pal - they may never meet, but they develope care and interest in this stranger... and soon the stranger part goes away.

There are a lot of great people around here - some you click with exceptionally well - some you always remain indifferent towards.

Wizard, you are the wind beneath my wings. You are the orange flavouring of my vitamin tablet. You are the zipper on my pants. You are the chocolate eyes and mouth of my gingerbread man. You are the bulb in my lamp. You are the milk in my cereal. You are the legs on my chair, the teeth in my mouth, the snot in my nose. It's just that I don't think he said it in such a way that bore correct interpretation.

What he probably meant was more simply a sense of community with him despite living in different nations. I just don't see wizard as the kind of person who randomly picks out people on the internet late at night and asks them "Are you my friend?"

I know, after posting that YOUAREMYFRIEND site, I don't deserve to come back here and clarify what he said for him, but I have a strong feeling that is what he meant.

Now to the true purpose of this thread.

I was required to find out if anyone felt any of those sort of things regarding our 'relationship'. If indeed there were people with whom I felt obligation/kinship etc. then I have reporting requirements.

Basically, if I know any non US citizens I have to report that to the NSA. I didn't even think these forums counted but we had a discussion about it at work due to recent activities (several people have been trying to sneak into our buildings) And they made specific mention of internet forums.

So, by me hiding behind this avatar, and not really knowing any of your names besides your aliases, I was just saved a whole pile of paperwork.

Trust me, the paperwork is the easiest part. The fun part comes when a Suit shows up at YOUR door and runs an investigation of you because I said that I know you.

They did this for my old boss, a Venezuelan citizen. Boy was she surprised when they showed up on her doorstep on Margharita Island in Venezuela. I had forgotten to tell her that I mentioned her on my paperwork. She freaked out because she thought they were immigration or the IRS.

So sure, I can list you as a contact if you really want me to. But I'll be sure to mention that I feel that you are trying to coerce me so you get that full turn your head and cough feeling.

As for what I do at work. I am not a spy or clandestine so I can say where I work rather than saying I work for "Bob's plumbing service". I am a LM engineer Who works on R&D projects. So I can tell you, and not have to kill you. (thats another person's job)

It has nothing to do with Anti-Terror. It is an anti spy measure.

(Anti-spy also means anti-competition as they try to spy on us from time to time as well. Though if caught they would get locked out of government contracts and would basically go bankrupt)

No, it is a law. I am required to report any foreign contacts that meet that level of relationship. Or I get a suite in federal pound me in the you know where prison.

In addition it is illegal for me to leave the country if I do not file a foreign travel notice. Even if it is just a trip to Canada.

And lolfighter, it would not be fun at all. Unlike the movies there is nothing fun about infosec. They even interviewed my first grade teacher.

That is one of the problems with working in this industry. People want to do it because it sounds cool to say: I work on project 'cant tell you or they shoot you'

But when it comes down to it we are just engineers, programmers and managers. Sure our programs have cool names like ... names that sound cool but I don't think I can say them.

But if you come looking for intrigue or James Bond and not Joe Software, you will be disappointed.
