<div class="IPBDescription">Marines, Heavies, and Aliens, Oh My!</div>Well, it's time for a release of my low poly player models. This pack includes the models listed below, and is about a 50% reduction for each of the models. I couldn't work with the players like I did with the <a href="http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=83533" target="_blank">structures</a> or <a href="http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=84886" target="_blank">world</a> models; since the players are more or less organic, it's tougher to decide what is essential and what isn't. Instead, I tried to choose a target polycount and work toward that.
This pack doesn't include a skulk or gestate model, 'cause Ollj already did them in his pack (Thread <a href="http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=31153" target="_blank">here</a>, mirror <a href="http://www.snappycrunch.com/ns/low_poly_player_model_pack_v1/NS_ollj_lowpolypack11.zip" target="_blank">here</a>)

The marine is the lowest percentage polycount of the lot, and is that way because I did it first, and you usually see marines in large groups. If I had shot for 50% instead of 33%, It would have been fleshed out a lot more, and wouldn't look so thin. I'm going to state that again: <b>I know the marine is thin. You don't have to tell me</b>. I might do a 50% version in the future, but I'm not particularly interested in one right now.
Most of the aliens were fairly easy to do, except the lerk. The lerk's high surface to volume ratio meant that it couldn't be taken down any farther than 62% without making it unrecognizable, and I'm surprised it could go that far.
The Heavy is something I'm really proud of. I didn't think I could get it to 50% without some real deformation, but it's there at 50% and you can barely tell the difference from the default.
And with those masturbatory comments out of the way, have a

EDIT: Using everything but the Rines cause it'll screw up my nice configs. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
i guess my wish came true ;D
well done <3
you could also remove those spikes on the lerk since well.. there arent anymore spikes... <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
the link to ollj's pack is dead; does anyone have it mirrored somewhere??
cortex: You'd be surprised how much those spikes add to the model. Ya take 'em away and it just looks weird. It's like those orange bits on near the face on the Heavy. They don't look important, but man, they are.
i'm trying to compile a pack of the 'least-worst' looking low-poly models i can find for (if possible) every unit/structure/model in the game; some of my friends really have crappy 'puterts and i demand that they play ns <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
thanks for all the great work!!

I've done more models than any other low poly modeler, and a some stuff still hasn't been done by anyone.
Besides <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=83533' target='_blank'>my</a> <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=84886' target='_blank'>three</a> <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=85594' target='_blank'>packs</a>, and my <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=84606' target='_blank'>prereleases</a>, the only stuff that's decent is:
Ollj's low poly pack (<a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=31153' target='_blank'>Thread</a>,<a href='http://www.snappycrunch.com/ns/low_poly_player_model_pack_v1/NS_ollj_lowpolypack11.zip' target='_blank'>Download</a>)
Dr Fuzzy's Doom pistol (<a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=68069' target='_blank'>Thread</a>,<a href='http://drfuzzy.nsarmslab.com/ns/models/doompistol/' target='_blank'>Download</a> ) and shotgun (<a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=75878' target='_blank'>Thread</a>,<a href='http://drfuzzy.nsarmslab.com/ns/models/doomshotty/' target='_blank'>Download</a>)
Maus' 31 poly <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=35391' target='_blank'>lmg</a>
**Grizzly's world models (<a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=76633' target='_blank'>Thread</a>,<a href='http://www.snappycrunch.com/ns/low_poly_world_model_pack_v1/NS_-_Grizzly_-_lowpoly_world_models.zip' target='_blank'>Download</a>)
Arson's low poly turret <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=37416' target='_blank'>pack</a>
Kinda sad, isn't it? That's why I started doing this stuff on my own. If you can find any other low poly models that are even halfway decent and I haven't already done them better, I'd love to hear about it. Just post back here.
i had a look at all the models i could find, exactly the ones SnappyCrunch listed here, and 'compiled' a pack that includes SnappyCrunch's three packs, arson's turret pack, **Grizzly's world models (not the welder or minepack though, i want the models to look as close to the originals as possible.. the minepack is nice but too different, and the welder is... well... it's a flat picture!!!), and the relevant models from Ollj's pack (no spikes in ns anymore... also no paralyze... )
what 'we' (the community) still need is in low-poly is:
- sc, mc and alien res tower (oc, dc and hive are in ollj's pack)
- a LOT of first-person weapon views (so far we only got SnappyCrunch's lmg and Ollj's acid-rocket... i excluded the ones from Dr. Fuzzy and Maus because they are too different from the original ones)
- weapon models (the ones you pick up... lmg, sg, hmg, gl, mines, welder)... i found a pack of htese but they were all 2D, that's a bit too low-poly to my taste <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
and maybe the siege cannon from arson's pack could be redone, the unbuilt animation is still the 2.01 version... but i really like his turrets somewhat more than SnappyCrunch's ones, those are just to 'square' (but still, great job!!)
A couple of notes:
You could rename mine2.mdl (deployed mine) to mine.mdl (spawned mine) if you don't like the mine pack. The originals look almost exactly the same anyway.
The weapon models are tedious at best, and they're tougher to handle. They're all under 2000 polys, and there's guaranteed to be only one on screen at a time. That makes 'em not very lucrative. Maybe they could be cut down to 50%, but since they're in your face all the time, you have to be a lot more careful about what you cut. You could do sprite view models, as an alternative, but they're even more tedious.
The 2d models you're talking about are **Grizzly's world models. The other models with the mine pack and welder are mine. The 2d weapon world models are the optimal solution; there's no other good way to reduce their polycount .They're all low poly already. You could cut about 25% of the polys off before it became completely unrecognizable, but the flat ones are a much more elegant solution.
Ollj's acid rocket view models isn't being used by NS anymore. Each alien now has one view model, and the various attacking parts move in and out of frame when you switch weapons.
Arson's turret pack is from 1.0, I believe; that's why the sentry turrets are huge in comparison to the 3.0 models.
