Ns_freon

Well ok here it is, i've made and scrapped 2 maps so far to come up with this (the steep NS learning curve )and finally settled on a name - freon.
Layout is 100%, lighting is just getting started (as you can see) and detail is minimal right now. Hope you like the screen, i'll post more as i update.

A lot will change so dont take the lighting as is, it will vary more as i work over the map. also those texlights dont emit a glow yet, not in the rad file.
An ya, that last shot is WAY to red It will be balanced more later.

Enjoy ( i hope )

I forgot to mention, the 2nd to last shot is very dark because i accidently moved the lights into the ceiling :x

    Don't hurt me.

I would say.."THAT SUCKS IT HAS NO DETAIL!" But I'm smart, and I notice you saying it's just started. The Architecture is good. Nice layout it seems.

Now thats got a red faction feel to it lol . doesnt look that bad cant wait for all the detail to be put in. You ever play red faction? that had some of the most basic mapping on it well on the ps2 it did. Nice looking map just waiting on the detail

Niftiness. Ditto for details, but new is new. One crit I would bring up (not really a crit, more of a personal taste), is to scale down the 'no-skid' metal floor texture a bit. I see it on a ton of maps, where the actual raised ridges of the flooring at that default size end up being about 6 game inches long each, when in reality on that type of flooring they are actually about an inch long. Just my take on it...

I love the lighting, even on the shot you said was too dark, i like it.
The shadows that cross the floor really add to the effect.
I personally like the redness from the last shot, could do with a few dashes of coloured/white light dotted about tho.
You probably know about the misaligned floor texture in the first shot but im telling you just incase
One last thing (maybe) in the first shot where the floor meets up with the wall it (the floor) looks very blurred, is that the texture too large or just a vid card thing?

Don't change the Red man, small areas of intense Red lighting make the atmosphere seem much more dangerous in those areas. 4th shot (I think) has a seam visible at the bottom of the rail... with that texture I find it looks better with a brush height of 30 instead of 32.

It's very 90° n@rby - I dont know if thats a good thing or not - keeps r_speeds down I suppose - I really need to see what your doing about cover and detain to give proper critisism.

hey narb - you know im a fan of your work but i got a few suggestions for ya.

1 - your architecture is good for all the shots but the last one (the last one is impressive architecture). But it is very ripetitive with the ceiling supports (the horizontal struts running along the ceiling) - i know it's not easy to come up with architectural designs for ceilings...but i think you should vary it a little more.

2 - you already said the lighting needs tweaking so i wont go much into that (although i like what you've done so far). As for the last pic being "too red" - i'm scared you're going to "balance" the area by reducing the intensity of the red lights...if i may suggest...simply add lights of a different color (white or yellow would be nice) of the same intensity...this way you keep a good contrast and besides...that red just looks too damn cool .

I'd have to agree with Mu_ on this one. The architecture you've got here is very angular and sharp. I'd definitely also need to see some detail put in here before I say much, because these shots are definitely lacking. Also, I'd like to see some variation with lighting. I think that the shot where you moved the lights into the ceiling has the best lighting of any of these.

looks good narb. i like how clean-cut it is. looks like there's a little bit of texture mis-alignment though.

    /nods head

Yeah, I like this style. I think it will have a nice professional feel to it once it has proper lighting and detail.

I don't have much criticism at this point, but will say that your lighting is going to need some more contrast then what is there. Realize that I realize its unfinished state, but I thought I'd point that out. You probably don't need to add hyper contrast throught the map, but once you get deep into it, I'd start adding it in.

I see you have spots going down the wall, but the darker shadow areas next to them are a little too bright, I think.

Overall, I really like this style. Nice and clean cut without making it look like a hoover vaccuum plant. (I'm assuming those would be pretty clean inside... or maybe not )

Big nasty texture mis-alignment on the floor of picture 3.

Nice pics, I feel this map has big potential.

Nice, but I get this feeling that the fifth picture is some boring and empty, though I guess you'll fix it with some added detail.

Edit: Btw, I'm curious about what gives the map name Freon.

I imagine A) Because it sounds cool, and B) Because it's close to neon and neon lighting is the thing nowadays and freon is great for lots of things but those damn kids just don't know how to deal with it and yeah.

But on the map itself, I pick up this empty vibe of "eh". Maybe with some better lighting it can spring to life. Although, I have to imagine it's hard for NS mappers because maps have to have a certain feel of "life" while also appearing cold and lonely.

Freon is the name of the gas they use in large areas of electronics (server rooms, control rooms, machinery etc) during a fire. It puts out the fire by reacting with the oxygen using it all up so the fire goes out. Deadly to humans.
So thats kind of the link

Your architecture is really good here, n@rby. I'm not entirely sure I like what's going on with the ceiling, though, especially the sixth shot. Those dull bars are just screaming for detail, as I'm sure you're aware.. The brushwork on the fourth shot, on the other hand, looks really nice, lots of places for Bob to hide in.

Also, isn't freon used in freezers or refridgerators or something?

Sounds oddly familiar... It would make sense though, considering oxygen is the evil entity that spoils food.

As long as we are talking about the name, I would have to say that I liked "sentinel" better... It was a bit more catchy if you ask me. That could just be me though.

Freon is a naugthy gas, as it ruins the ozon layer we all depend on so much. So please keep it from going out in the atmosphere, ppl.

I personally like the name, more orignal than sentinel, though that's a cool name too.

Freon is used in various cooling systems such as air conditioners and refrigerators. At atmospheric pressure, freon is a gas, but under pressure it compresses to a liquid state. The way an air conditioner works is that liquid freon is forced through a venturi nozzle into a wider, lower pressure space (sometimes it is forced though a series of these nozzles). This accelerates the freon, especially since it must expand from a liquid to a gaseous state. This conversion and velocity change absorbs a lot of heat (ie: it 'feels' cold). The widened part of the air conditioning system is typically built like a radiator, so that the freon can absorb heat from the surrounding air through the metal radiator fins and coils. After the freon passes through the radiator, a compressor compresses the freon back into a liquid state and pumps it through the cycle again. The whole process is sealed from the atmosphere.

That's enough Dr. Science for today.

*edit* Okay, just a bit more. There are different types of freon. The type used in cars about 10 years ago was called R-12, and was bad for both the ozone and people's health that were exposed to it too much. R-134a came out to replace r-12 as a safer alternative, but it turned out to be just as bad, and was not nearly as efficient for cooling as R-12. There has since been yet another replacement that claims to be safer. The type used in refrigeration units is another different type.

Actually, I rather like Freon as a name. Firstly, it sounds very cool. Sorry. Secondly, it presents itself as something less blatantly threatening than "sentinal", which is something I really dig. Lastly, It's short and, at least for me, easy to remember. Think Hera, think Bast, think simply.
