Booting Problem

Extreme slowdown during loading
Hello people.
I have a problem with my computer. I got a new one on Tuesday: P4 2.4 Ghz, P4PE2-X Motherboard, ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 256 MB, 256 MB DDR333 PC2700 RAM, on-board sound, 10/100 on-board LAN.
Yesterday, I installed DirectX 9.0c (the newest one). Restarted, I think, yada-yada. Today, when I turn it on, it stalls for about 10 seconds on the screen before "Windows XP loading", and for another minute or so after that, before it displays the desktop and everything.
Can anyone help please?
If you want a dxdiag report, I can give one.

Try restarting and seeing if it happens again.

I've tried that. I wouldn't be posting here if I hadn't
And I tried reinstalling DX9.0c. No effect.
Please help!

I've tried defragging. If this is not solved in 1 hour, I'm formatting (I tend to be extremely overdecisive when formatting. What is your load up sequence and do you have any disc/floppy in your drive?

Start -> Run -> msconfig. Look in the Startup tab to see there is something that should be starting at boottime. Otherwise, go into the BOOT.INI tab and check /SOS then reboot. With the SOS check on it'll show you the drivers that are being loaded into memory, pay attention to which one takes so long and remove/reinstall/fix it.

EDIT:

Oh services could be causing this as well, if they are, you're on your own.

<s>This is probably not the reason, since it's a new computer, but make sure you don't have too many programs all executing on start-up.

As a rule of thumb, if you don't need it immediately after start-up, then it shouldn't be running automatically.</s>

edit: I have no idea what I'm talking about.

I've decided to postpone my formatting
Realized I have too many important things on my computer right now.
Thanks, I will try some scans. And then services...
I fooled around with services quite a bit; turned off all the unnecessary ones (under the guidance of some site. blackviper, or something). Let me try to get that fixed... maybe it's the problem.
Thanks in advance. I'll see if I can fix this.
[edit]
I know about msconfig, and only things I need are running (of which there aren't many).
IMPORTANT
I think that some of you think this is when my computer is loading windows - after I click my user name or whatever. This is not what I mean - I mean it lags before that. I turn on computer; shows some basic info on computer "RAM, processor", then wait 10 seconds. (Before, this was instant). Show motherboard name - P4PE2-X. Wait a minute or even more (before, this was almost instant). Show windows loading screen, wait couple of seconds, load user menu (to log on).
Ok? Thanks.

If it keeps doing that even after formats (which is what I gather from your statement), then it's a hardware problem. Probably the most thorough way to see what's wrong is to swap parts with other computers.

This is the first day that it has happened. The only change I've done to my system is installing DirectX 9.0c. And maybe before that, changing a few services.
This cannot be a hardware problem.

j00 got haxed11!!1

Really though, I agree that it might be spyware/virus/trojan. Get your hands on McAfee virus scan/firewall, adaware, and spybot.

Ok let's get rid of the virus question. Are you using a firewall/router? Because if you aren't you can probably get hit by a virus before you get to install all the updates. (No exageration- I've seen it happen before). If you are, then you're probably ok in this area.

I have a router, D-Link 524. The firewall is there.
And, silly me, I turned off system restore (instinct, back from the days when I salvaged every megabyte I could find :'().

Small slowdowns are generally the result of software, big slowdowns (particularly if your computer doesn't appear to be "thinking") are usually hardware issues.

In this case I would guess it's an incompatability between DX9c and your vid drivers. Roll back your drivers, get new ones, get older but recent drivers, etc. or just make do without the newest version of DX (and whatever games require it) until a new driver comes out.

My video drivers aren't that new; ATI Radeon 9600 Pro, official drivers - 7 months old, came on the CD.
I'm experiencing no slow-down whatsoever after windows has loaded up. It's only when I turn on the computer - those moments before the user screen.
Well, I'm in for the night. Thanks for all your help guys, we'll see what happens tomorrow.

Scanned using Ad-Aware SE Personal. Found something called "Alexa" (5 out of 5 threat), removed. Problem stays
Any way to remove DX9.0c?
