Yes, I'm going to have to agree that Starcraft had a good story. Half life's story was by no means original, or interesting, but how it was told was the immersive part. At that time, no one had played anything like it. Compare HL to the games now, and there won't be much competition. That of course, comes to no surprise. Compare HL to the games that were released at that time, and it was an incredable game.
it really was how it was told. More that it wasn't TOLD to you. It wasn't shoved into your face, "Here's the story." It was there for those who watched and listened.
Questionable Ethics: I wonder what that title is all about... (rounds corner) ... It was us... this isn't an attack, it's a counterattack. We're to blame here.
So did everybody just forgot SiN then? I know, it was bugged to **** at it's release, but they pretty much sorted the majority of the issues with patch 1.01. HL really would've had a competitor on it's hands if SiN was released properly fixed. After 6 years I still think it is heavely underrated.

Starcraft did have a pretty decent storyline, considering it was ripped from WH40K fluff, and changed enough to avoid legal conflict.
I will give credit to HL for introducing properly used scripted events, nothing more (which nowadays are a plague). I found System Shock to be much more immersive, and it was released four years earlier...

[edit: oh yea, hooray for Quake 2: 11/30/1997]
Is that why you're taking the time to post on a fourm for a HL1 mod -- a game 6 years old but still the most popular game ever to be made?
OVERRATED WHAT? ROKT IN THE FACE
There was no immersiveness to it at all.
Opposing force was 10x better and much more immersive. Partly infact because it was believable. A marine who's plane is shot down. Trying to find out his orders. Linking up with fellow marines and kicking butt with excessive amounts of firepower.
Not pocket protector dweeb who goes from shoving crates around a lab to killing entire batalions of marines with a shotgun. With a very healthy dose of crate puzzles. Boy those were fun
HL2 will probably be different since it's known gordon is some hardass nerd with a gun now. But before it was like. Riggghhht.

I would have to agree with that. However, for all its unrealistic quirks it was immersive. I enjoyed it. I 'felt' for the character. And I'm hoping that feeling will follow into the sequel.
Particularly with Alyx
And as I said the reason HL is so revered is because it had NO COMPETITION when it came out. It beat Quake 2 congrats to valve. They managed to beat a blind, armless retarded kid in a fist fight.

To enjoy any video game, you have to have some suspension of disbelief. If you insist on everything being completely realistic, you're just going to be out of luck. In fact, I could harp on NS for hours about how it doesn't reflect reality, but I've accepted it and I enjoy it (and I assume you have too or you wouldn't be here). Gordon is a scientist in advanced power armor whose physical training background you have no idea about. I don't think it's any more far fetched a protagonist than any other FPS out there.

if you want to compare HL1 SP to other games, keep it within '98 - lets compare::
STARCRAFT: OLOLOO YEAH AMAZING STORY THERE
RAINBOWSIX: HOLY CRAP THE STORYLINE WAS AMAZING
THEIF: !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I could go on but I gtg now, and it looks like you just got rocked for a second time in a row -- I will now leave it up to the NS community to continue rocking you in your face

Quick, pull the emergency brake before we crash into the misinformation!
I'm not sure if you just want to go with the PC, but let's only include PC games (just a few):
Grim Fandango 9/30/1998
Unreal (okay, maybe a bit iffy) 4/30/1998
Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 7/31/1998
Baldur's Gate 11/30/1998
Fallout 2 9/30/1998
Thief 11/30/1998
Final Fantasy 7 5/31/1998

Now lets narrow that list down.
FPS's -
Unreal
Rainbow Six
Now lets narrow it down a little further.
Not supposed to be a realistic CQB simulator
Unreal.
Unreal was a good game in its own right but its System Requirements were a bit steep at the time so you couldn't run it WELL on that kickin rad Voodoo1 system let alone software mode.
but i serioulsy gtg now later
2 worthless storylines against as you said yourself a "decent" storyline
Not much competition is it. HL raised the bar for SP games no doubt but it wasn't awesome or amazing by any stretch. It's longevity can be attributed to 2 things.
The extremely simple gameplay of CS and System requirements.
2) going to have a ton of mods because pretty much everyone that modded for hl is going to hl2
3) that vampire game is coming out now
4) the pit will be converted to sourcce
5) i can make a 3000 poly pistol and people might not **** as much
6) it gives me something to do for a week while waiting for WoW retail

Very good point is made.
Even for now, HL1SP is uncompared in immersion for me- despite the low res, blocky, twitchy grapihcs, I felt like I WAS Gordon Freeman, and that I WAS in the middle of hell on earth.
Thats all it has to do.

hey guys it totally raised the bar but it still sucks! ^_~
Sin you be frank was better than hl it was very good shame they dont bring another one out it was a head of its time
I will give credit to HL for introducing properly used scripted events, nothing more (which nowadays are a plague). I found System Shock to be much more immersive, and it was released four years earlier...
