Software For Voice

Is there any freeware?
The note in the settings says use Miles Sound, but I was unable to find any freeware on their site to activate internet chat. Is there a program anyone else uses to get voice chat running in HL? Would Windows XP come with anything? I honestly haven't checked.

Well the new half-life patch (new = latest patches.. years old?) have voice software built in.. it's a matter of configuring it.

To configure do I need to edit a file or is it within the game screen? I have my voice hotkey set up, but I don't know if I should be hearing myself, or see my name in the usual "using voice" box that pops up. I can hear others fine, but I'm sure no one can hear me. Any details on what and how to set this up would be appreciated.

Open up VoiceTweak.exe inside your Half-Life folder to configure.

You MUST have a PCI sound card or voice com will not work It doesn't have to be anything REAL fancy, but it must be PCI and support bi-directional sound (send and recieve at the same time, most,if not all, do). PCI slots are the white slots on the main board in your PC. If you have a built-in sound card (like on a Dell, Compaq, or HP system) then it is most likely compatable, but you never can be sure until you test it.

You will also need to bind a key. There is a spot in the Key Configuration menu for that. Also, I would recommend you turn the voice transmit up to about 3/4 of the bar. From my experience helping people out with VC, that usually works best (not to low but also no break-up or feedback). Also, I recommend that you get a good headphone/mic headset. This will stop sound and voices coming over your speakers from getting retransmitted thru your mic.

    Good Luck,

Thanks for the help Gunny. The things you mentioned are all accounted for. Also, all my tests come back fine both with Voicetweak, and system checks. But I don't show up as voice capable when I'm in the game. On the player scores (TAB) it shows who is voice capable, and I don't show up. I have the bound key, and I'm assuming you hold it down during your entire speech. I get the speaker icon up. But nothing occurs in game.

I'm running Windows XP professional on a P41.8A overclocked to 2.4 on an Asus P4S533 board with onboard sound. I'm a fair techie, but I've not ventured into Voice or Internet Voice Chat before. This is the first game that's REALLY made me want voice. hehe.

    Any other ideas are appreciated.

In the Multiplayer -> Customize screen, make sure the voice options are checked.

also make sure these are all set correctly in your config.cfg in your NS folder. (make sure its in the NS folder aswell as CS and HL folders)

    voice_scale (set this to .75)
    voice_enable (set this to 1)
    voice_forcemicrecord (set this to 1)
    sv_voiceenable (set this to 1)
    voice_modenable (set this to 1)

another thing, type: cl_loopback 1 in console. it repeats what u say so you can hear urself. might help determine the problem (if there actually is one)
