That's how it works. And it's not just game industries. It's endemic to the entire software industry, as it has not matured enough yet for people to formulate intelligent deadlines or have reasonable expectations. Or, at least management hasn't matured enough, but they aren't likely to be the source of the problem, but rather just propagators.
Hooray for the EU working time directive. 48 hours max.
Pulling 90+ hour weeks is not sustainable for any length of time. Productivity just drops through the floor. Errors creep in. Any sane company knows that its employees need balance to be productive. Whether its spending time at home with their spouse or the kids, exercising, chilling, mingling, hobbies etc... The irony is that EA would have more chance of hitting their deadlines by introducing 40 hour weeks and encouraging their employees to have balance in their lives outside work. Certainly the software would be much less buggy.
I assume that most of the employees at EA are twenty-something graduates who delude themselves into believing that their work is their life. Problem is, these kids are going to burn themselves out when they hit 30. And then EA will dump them.
And the kicker is that there are plenty of roles in software development that don't involve games. I reckon that a lot developers at EA aren't actually working on anything much different to the rest of us who develop non-game related software. The trick is to find your niche or forté and develop those skills. For example, CAD based companies are crying out for people with interests in 3D graphics.
