On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, the armistice was signed in Versailles and WWI formally ended. We hold a two minute silence to honour those who died in war so that we may live in peace; not just the poor souls who were taken in WWI, but all those who died fighting for our country.

I think Rem. Day is usually held on a Sunday, but I always buy my poppy on the 11th. The money goes to charity for veterens.

By "we", I mean the English. I think Canada and Oz have the same thing, as well, but I'm not sure.

    Been and gone in Australia.

    Lest we forget.

Yup, we definitely have it over here in Australia.

We all stop at 11am for a silence, although my school made it 11:30 this year, as 11am is half way through our recess, and the bells would have completely confused people and not allowed the proper respect deserved by those who have died for our country.

I think the USA has some other 'day' on the 11th. I can't remember whether they have their memorial day or veterens day on today?

    They all fought so hard.....

and now look what has come of the world, mainly England?

Is it just me or do none of the younger generation respect the elderly (or the country) anymore?

It might just be here in London, i don't know....

Oh and another thing, do you think it's right that asians (different religion...like islam n that) get Christmas off of school and work as well as their own religious holidays (ramadam n all that)....whereas christians just get christmas....

Well, i'm just **** off that this was once a great country that ruled most of the world, and was a great power, is now getting raped for everything it's got...

I don't see what's so bad about present day England. We're doing well economically, and we have our freedom. How are we getting "raped"?

"The younger generation doesn't have the same respect" is something the older generation always claims. That doesn't mean it's true.

Believe me when I say Britain is 10x better off than America when it comes to its kids. At least they don't have to grow up in a world of "3,000 murders a year!" where rappers are seen as the cream of the crop of top class people, so they grow up to murder people to, holding guns like idiots and spouting off cuss words without reason.

For us, its Veteran's Day- Memorial day much earlier in the year for those that are dead, today for us is for those still alive. Respect to you all that may frequent these boards that are a vet from any of the wars, or anyone anyone here may meet.

Quebec didn't want to go to war when the rest of Canada did, probably because they didn't want to fight alongside the English. So, Remembrance day is observerd with somewhat less serious here. I can't find anywhere where I can get a poppy, which makes me sad, and I doubt if there will be two minutes of silence in class today.

In War they have been dismembered, and are being dismembered
They are crying out: Promote Peace, Re- Member

Lead me from Death to Life
Millions in our world are being dismembered: they go hungry, they are
exploited, they are marginalized because of their caste, class, colour or
    sex .
They are calling out: Promote Peace, Re-Member.

Lead me from hate to love
People are being dismembered by military regimes and dictatorships, in
prisons and by unjust laws and policies, by war industry and political
    greed.
They are challenging us: Promote Peace, Re-Member.

Lead me from falsehood to truth
People are dismembered: they are trampled on by forces of oppression,
the unjust systems that break the spirit of people and rob them of their
    rights and dignity.
They are begging us: Promote Peace, Re-Member

Lead me from despair to hope
Let us remember the 11.11.11, let us pay tribute to all those who paid the
price of dismemberment, let this be a reminder to Re-Member.

Lead me from fear to trust, from war to peace
Let peace fill our heart, our world, our universe
    [The International Prayer For peace]

You.. don't live in America.. do you? That kind of attitude is really only a city-sorta deal. Everywhere else we just laugh at "ghetto rapper" people.

Since when did observing a holiday mean we can make fun of eachother?

Sheesh people, have some respect! I'm locking this pretty much just to make a point. When someone makes a thread like this, don't polute it with the inane squabblings that saturate the rest of the forums. Please.
