If you have not heard, Mr. Arafat is now dead. Imminent peace in coming in the preceding months due to a leadership change? Doubt it.

Discuss.

Imminent peace? Hell no. Is peace at least now possible? Hell yes. Arafat is responsible for the current situation imho - when you are overpowered, and arguing from a vastly inferior position, taking the "You'll do it our way or else, no compromises" approach was insane.

It's very bad in a way, there's going to be a massive power vaccum. But maybe, just maybe, the new leader will bring peace to the middle east. Just maybe.

I'll be interested to see how people respond to his death.

Let's see if Sharon goes to the funeral.

Optimists will likely say peace. Pecimists will likely say an increase in terrorist activity. I'd say a power-struggle that will create a temporary lull in suicide bombings.

    Temporary.

Your political position should be irrelevant, unless you share the fanatical "death to the Jews" political approach.

Arafat rejected a plan for a Palestinian state thought up by the Jews with MASSIVE concessions.

QUOTE

Arafat continued negotiations with Netanyahu's successor, Ehud Barak. Due partly to his own politics (Barak was from the leftist Labor Party, whereas Netanyahu was from the rightist Likud Party) and partly due to immense pressure placed by American President Bill Clinton, Barak offered Arafat a Palestinian state in parts of the West Bank and Gaza Strip with East Jerusalem as its capital, a return of a limited number of refugees and a compensation for the rest. In a move widely criticized abroad and even by a member of his negotiating team and Cabinet, Nabil Amr, Arafat rejected Barak's offer, and refused to make a counter-offer. Following a highly controversial visit by Ariel Sharon to the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound and the violence which followed, the Second Palestinian Intifada (2000-present) began. After the start of the Second Intifada, Arafat's wife moved to live with her mother and daughter in Paris, France, where she still resides.

Arafat

There is no excuse for that. They got the deal of the century and they turned it down. Arafat sodomised the Palestinians. I'd dance on this dogs grave, he has a lot of blood on his hands. This is why I laugh when Palestinians wail on TV about how hard done by they are, right before singing the praises of Arafat - they're so stupid they deserve everything they get.

Likud "extremists" derailed the peace process in the 90s by assassinating Rabin.

After secret meetings between Palestinian and Israeli representatives during 1993, the Oslo Accords where signed in 1994. At the same time, there was the historic handshake between Rabin and Arafat presided over by Clinton. Both leaders had taken their people to the brink of peace, breaking down decades of mistrust and hatred.

Arafat, along with Rabin and Peres, won the Nobel peace prize in 1994 after the signing of the Oslo Accords.

But Rabin was assassinated during an apparent coup by Likud party "extremists" in late 1995 just before he could implement the Accord.

Likud are now in power in Israel headed by Sharon. It is no wonder that Arafat and the Palestinians don't trust them. I wouldn't.

[feel free to correct my facts here]

Now peace actually stands a fighting chance.

Did you guys hear about how arafats wife was preventing the people in the hospital from treating him unless he told her the account numbers for all the money he has stuck in switzerland or whatnot, my dad was telling that story to my mom but I only gleened so much.

Can I still live in a world where actual news, however reviled its subject matter might be, actually matters more than a weekly crime drama?

    For crying out loud.

Munkey - I suspect that with all the rumours racing around about Arafat's death, they didnt want their producer jumping the gun and running a story before it was 100% confirmed. They even laid down a procedure for it, and that guy failed to follow it - and consequently he got the chop.

I'd rather find out about Arafat's death than the end of CSI - because then I could get out quickly, grab a few Coroners and have a quiet celebration.

    Arafat = bling bling

I never felt comfortable linking to this stuff - but The Australian did an entire section on Arafat and his corruption gained millions today, so I guess it must be common knowledge and not slur.

Yeah, but this seemed to err way on the side of caution-- and the reluctance of all the networks to break up their regularly scheduled programming almost seems to have led to some sort of staring contest.

"You're not going to break into CSI? Well, Fear Factor will be complete before we eve think about doing any reporting whatsoever!"*

*I doubt these shows compete; I'm just using them for illustrative purposes.

The guy gambled and made what actually turned out to be the right call, yet he gets fired-- and this seems less a commentary on his call than it is on the fact that most people watching were probably **** that CSI got bumped for the news break.

As it turns out, I'm pretty sure prime time programming is the actual opiate of the people.
