I was hanging out with guys that I play games with on IRC when they told me to install this mod that was a lot like Gloom only nicer looking. I installed H-L and downloaded the mod(1.03 I believe), hopped on a server running ns_nancy, and have been playing it steady ever since. I remember that I used to pub on voogru's when I was a newb and then moved on to Evil server. Good times.

I learned about this mod on the Massassi Temple forums (Jedi Knight editing site, www.massassi.net) in a thread discussing what Half-Life mod had the best teamplay. I said that Day of Defeat was the best when compared to Counter-Strike. Someone then posted with "Natural Selection > DoD > CS". Someone else asked what Natural Selection was about and he replied with that it was a sci-fi RTS/FPS hybrid mod. I then went to planethalflife.com to read up about if and I eventually came to the official website and downloaded version v1.0 of the mod (servers were running v1.03 about this time). And ever since then, I've kept playing

When a friend of mine show me this mod, I played DoD back then.
After some days, i download it and played with the friend, and 1-2 months later he quit.
So i decided to continue.
Played since v1.0, if i remember correctly.

i was playing TFC i think. i'd never been hardcore into any mod but i was playing this game and it sucked. most of them did. i heard two guys say "meh lets go play NS" and was intreguied. i downloaded it the same day and loved it ever since. unfortunatly i had to quit for some time a while back but now im here for good.

I was feeling a little bored with AHL just prior to 1.0 release, so I went wandering and found the place by chance. I came, I lurked, I began posting. The rest is history (And 2,500 posts later, I'm still here!)

Because of its Shortcut NS. For a German as myself it is forever bound to the term (N)ational (S)ozialism. I was playing DoD one day and someone was chatting with a buddy and told him, he would go play NS.

I asked what sick WW2-mod that might be and if DoD was not skinhead enough any more....
Well that was what I thought, I did ask more politely however.
I'm glad I did. Two hours late I was in NS nancy, 1.04 completely clueless and asked for HA and Jetpack.

I joined back at 1.03.

I was talking with my friend over the phone one day, and he told me about this great game where he built turrets and could run away from these big bad evil monsters, and what an experience it was. How you could climb walls and fly and such. He was always on the lookout for new, obscure mods or games.

It intrigued me enough that I decided to try it. When I saw it was fps/rts I was even more hooked as I love both these genres.

My first game was on eclipse and I was stunned. I phased in via IP and immediately got hounded by acid rockets splashing all over me. Then a big behemoth charged in, killing half the team in 2 seconds (this was the time when FPS determined charge/leap damage). I was terrified and remember ducking behind the armoury, shooting at things that wouldn't die!

The commander kept typing 'phase! phase!' but I was in utter fear at jumping through the gate, leaving the security of base. We got thrashed after the marines split between an attack and defence.

On my 3rd game I tried to comm, and I did pretty weird things, but had enough ideas to win the game. Everyone congratulated me, and from that game on, I've never stopped comming since.

I can't remember how I discovered it, but it was a good few months before the mod came out. I remember skipping school on Halloween to download it because I was so fascinated by the concept. I didn't play much until recently, because my computer ran NS at less than one frame per second (!) back then.

It's still enjoyable, but it's harder to find a good game these days. Such is the curse of pub servers, I suppose.

I stopped playing counter-strike since steam realeased.
I watched Starship Troopers in January 04 (it's one of my fav. movies). I searched around for a SST MOD for Half-Life but everything I found were inactive MODs. Someone in the german forums (mods.de) linked me to natural-selection.org. he said that this is a good alternative. and yay I downloaded it,played it and got addicted on the 2nd day I met the most important person in my life in the game =) I founded my clan and here I go
I was in luck that my experience with HL over all these years helped me to fit into that MOD really quick.

I was just playing around on the internet and looked throught a lot of hl mods. I saw ns.org before ns had been released and i thought well hey.. this looks cool.

Then on my bday i was tired and I ended up on ns.org page and it had just been released so I downloaded it and have been playing since then.

I was at uni so I couldn't play online games. I used to play counter-strike religiously until it was ruined after beta 5 so it was only natural for me to get back in to HL mods. I'd seen NS on a couple of cover CDs so eventually decided to download it and give it a go.

Haven't looked back since and I haven't really played many other games for longer than 3 days too. Even GTA:SA seems boring compared to NS.

I didn't actually download Natural-Selection until late 2.1-early 3.0 I was really into another third party game called "The Wastes" I think I found out about NS around version 1.04 because my best friend was really into it. I kinda regret not getting into it right away because it seems like 1.04 was prime!

I dont know how you can compare NS with GTA:SA.
The games are not even close each other.

...some weeks later, a couple of other friends asked me what the heck was going on with me and why I stopped calling...

...I told them why...

I actually heard about it some time summer 2002 or there about. It's a bit to long ago to remember clearly but it was some short blurb and a pic(some painted prerelease thing), I thought hey that's neat then forgot all about it until around about 1.02 when someone reminded me on the local DC hub while I was leeching the latest episode of star trek, futurama or some other tv show and I instantly went to grab it.

(aliens where gibable when they died, e.g. a gorge just when *splat* and dissapeared when killed with a HMG. I do not know if I played 1.01 or not but I think I joined during 1.02). I join as a marine the first time and instantly get a HMG dropped on me only to get my arse kicked by an onos half a second later who is standing right next to the infantry portal.

I remember hardly noticing that 1.03 came out. Around about the time 1.04 was on it's way I had registered to the forums and thought it would be a really neat update. The first time I played it I totally hated it, so much had changed, skulks where so weak it was silly. In 1.03 on any random public server skulks would often kill marines before they managed to build an armory and a pair of IPs(litterally). After 1.03 people started relocating to a hive the first thing they did(most times aliens won was killing the squad of dudes going to grab a hive)and running solo missions, even carapaced skulks weren't that much of a threat most of the time to a solo marine. For all of 1.04 I didn't play nearly as much as during 1.03.

Then 2.0 came out, the first client and server update. I found it to be neat at first but devour and stomp was just too annoying(this was in the first few weeks were pub commanders hadn't figured out how to not let the aliens conquer the entire map with sensory chambers while we cower away in the corner of our base behind 200 turrets, and onos where quite killable as RFK from skulks, the grenade launcher reloading directly from the armory bug and the nerfed acid rocket and lack of gorges using bile bomb made the game drag out for sometimes as much as an hour. All onos ever did was get redemption, get in and stomp and devour, get shot up and redempt(devouring marines went with the onos back to the hive), then let out some really cheesy comment like "that tickles in mah tummy" or "get in ma belleh!!1"). The fades changed dramatically, they weren't the acid spamming pack animals they were in 1.04, now they where the bouncing soloers that cleaned up stray marines and if the marines really sucked, just plain got into their base and smashed up important buildings, ignoring any marine attempts at shooting them through a bunch of buildings.

Not until the 3.0 public beta did I start playing as much as I did in the early days again, combat brought so many newbies that weren't only unwilling to read the manual or listen to advice(and by that I don't mean 'advice' as in "SUYF nub", I mean real, non vitriol laden advice), they would accuse you of wall hacking if you used parasites, scent of fear, motion tracking or sometimes just your freaking ears to any advantage. Alot of more experienced people seemed to turn really sour at this time. I still don't like CO much, I feel it has removed alot from NS. For some reason the only good, CD protected NS servers with some semblance of team work that I manage to find are all spanish...

I played Day of Defeat that time and got bored off it and so I looked around for other mods and in some mod network I found a link to the Natural Selection site announcing the release for the next days. As its look pretty interesting I bookmarked it and checked every day for the release and downloaded and played since day 1.

Hum, having played UO (Ultima Online) for 3 years straight, plus abit of CS / TFC on the side with friends, one of our American friends told my Finnish friend about NS. Eventually, i downloaded it and tryed it out, i can faintly remember flying around with heavy+jp , and wondering how the heck this game works. Even when my friends did a private server and tryed to teach me, i kinda realised abit. But i quite soon stopped playing. Only to start again a month or so after cause of my friends kept talking about NS, and its varietys. That was back in 1.03/4 , Got into a clan even on late 1.04, and have been playing with them ever since, plus ofcourse other NS buddies .

I still play other games, mostly CoD and WC3FT, but i keep coming back to NS. Luv it. Guess its the faint reason why im a Constellation member too, though i did have altenative motives for it at the time of donation .

Photek - people only like 1.04 because of what the competitive community was like. The mod itself was much worse at the time. You could outfit two guys with JP/HMG in under 5 minutes without even building a node, skulks were made of tissue paper and marines could silent bunnyhop just as well as aliens can bh today, aforesaid JP could fly infinitely, etc. But there were things like the Team USA vs. Team Korea matches, the original HAM, pandas, sYn, ReD, eve, ue, etc. etc., so it was a lot of fun for a while. By the time 1.1 was announced though, watching bad clans marine tie good clans was getting way boring.

I heard about NS at this place.
