<div class="IPBDescription">When did you first learn it existed?</div> Please share your interesting (Or boring. -_-) stories of how you discovered that this mod existed. Tell what happened before and slightly after you discovered the mod.
I'll share my story for you guys.
It all started one day after a game of Counter-Strike with some of my four year long Starcraft forum buds. We all started at an Ikonboard Starcraft forum. That website soon died, and we moved on to another forum created by one of the previous members, which also died, and another member of that forum created, a forum, in which that forum died to create the forum that we still reside at today. (Everyone has a home forum, right? All were Starcraft forums. O_o)
Anyway. We use AIM to create a chat so we can organize a game of CS. We were taking a break and they started talking about odd things. The only recognizable word was "Hive" (Teir 3 Starcraft structure.) and I assumed they were talking about Starcraft. (Like usual.) Then they started talking about sieging the hive. I assumed they were talking about Siege Tanks. Then they went to discuss heavy armor. I assumed they were talking about the armor type.
They talked some more about "gorges" and "skulks" and other things I didn't recognize. As well as the commander stuff. I finally asked them "What UMS are you guys talking about?" and they informed me that they weren't talking about Starcraft at all.
They then told me all about NS. What it was, about this website, how it was like, etc. So I started downloading it. I had dial up at the time, so it took a very long time. When I finally finished I joined their server (He had this for awile. Shame he quit and doesn't have the server anymore.) and started trying out things. It was cool running on walls and leaping through vents as an alien. After they were done teaching me aliens I was ready to try out the marines. They taught me how the marines work and about the commander. I tinkered around with the commander mode and found it an interesting (And beautiful.) enough mod to not uninstall.
I played NS usually on a daily basis until Steam came out. When Steam was installed it had a nasty habit of "moving" all the uneeded files that steam already uses and deleting them. This meant I couldn't play the older version of Counter-Strike on WON. That also meant I couldn't play NS. Steam was too much for my dial-up to handle online play, coupled with my 63 ram. So I left the NS scene.
I later aquired a 768Kbs cable connection and a 256 ram upgrade (Totalling 318 ram.) and began to play Counter-Strike on Steam again. I somewhat forgot about NS, since I hadn't played it in so long. So one day we're back in our little AIM chat taking yet another break from Counter-Strike and my friend brings up Natural-Selection again. He tells everyone how it works on Steam now. I quickly download NS and have been playing ever since.

Well they d/led it the first day, and came to work talking about the game style, and play. I got the impression that there were several indoor areas (like huts), and one massive outdoor cavern.
So I downloaded it that night.. and I've played it daily ever since. The things I was wrong about didn't bother me, the things I didn't know about intrugued me...
dewd this mod is hawtness with resoures and tech tree and everything
we came, we played, we had our jaws drop and we've been playing ever since
-"Have you heard of the new Half-Life mod? It's like Aliens vs Marines .... etc."
Later that day I called the same friend to ask what the mod was called. It was the golden days of 1.04 and I have been a fan to NS ever since (though the newest versions have been somewhat dissapointing).
Now I'm like tied to it, NS4LIVE!!
Anyway. 2 months or so later, NS was released. I was so amazed. I remember bringing up the menu and being totally awed by the sound made when you choose an evolution. And other cool things. Then I went to the forums to see what was happening... and found that you have to register to get in! OMGWTH! Obviously I couldn't bear being without so I registered pronto. Didn't post much back then, IIRC.
And the rest, as they say, is history.(ie, boring long stories)

YOU LIE!!!!!
Dude, Travis was talking about it BEFORE it came out. He showed us the teaser videos at lunch, remember? How geeky were we. We installed HL on a lab at school, and played NS at lunch. The firewall prevented us playing externally, so we played 4v4 or 5v5 games. I must say, It is hard as a commander to have a strat when the aliens can hear your strat, or can turn their head and look and see where you are. We didnt' even have enough HL keys to add mroe people, as more wanted to play. I mean, We only had so many computers! We even convinced our 50 year old teacher to play a game once. It was quite amusing. She was disgusted by the hive and the skulks. her venture into NS didn't last too long.
And amazingly, during the time of playing NS at lunch, I managed to pick up a girlfriend....Weird...
So I looked up some reviews on gamefaqs, and was informed it was a starcraft-esque game with uber graphics.
Playing it since.
Been playing ever since
Marines won.
But since performance was so bad I stopped playing. A week later I came back for an "epic" 3h long game on ns_nothing as marine. Due to a bug int he res system, marines got almost unlimited res and proceeded to fill the map with turrets. Completely fill it. You could walk from marine start to generator room ontop of the turrets, against which onos after onos after onos threw themselves and died.
Muahaha.
I was download Developer version with two buggy maps and try run around, build something ..
(I think there was only sentry turets, and console was static board with use button - static builded in map)
- and as alien I can there only fly and using leap, AND gorge split <!--emo&::gorge::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/pudgy.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='pudgy.gif' /><!--endemo-->
and there I say woaaaah .. I need it .. I can't live without it .. and hard play it since 1.0 (minimal one game per day <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='asrifle.gif' /><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::onos::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tiny.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tiny.gif' /><!--endemo--> )
Which reminds me, one of my friends was at the local cyber cafe, playing some NS. (Almost everyone there is a 1337-CSPlayer by the way) A guy walks up to him and says, "What kind of a Counter-Strike mod is that?"
I personally probably would've laughed at his face, but that's just me.
evil | Commie SPy <-- the sex
And seeing as mods back in those days rarely succeeded, i just skimmed through NS just like any mod.
I originally thought it was some sort of modern-day marines vs. aliens in a jungle like in the Predator movie...
Heh. Obviously not the case.
