How Did You Go About Discovering This Mod?

When did you first learn it existed?
Please share your interesting (Or boring. -_-) stories of how you discovered that this mod existed. Tell what happened before and slightly after you discovered the mod.

I'll share my story for you guys.

It all started one day after a game of Counter-Strike with some of my four year long Starcraft forum buds. We all started at an Ikonboard Starcraft forum. That website soon died, and we moved on to another forum created by one of the previous members, which also died, and another member of that forum created, a forum, in which that forum died to create the forum that we still reside at today. (Everyone has a home forum, right? All were Starcraft forums. O_o)

Anyway. We use AIM to create a chat so we can organize a game of CS. We were taking a break and they started talking about odd things. The only recognizable word was "Hive" (Teir 3 Starcraft structure.) and I assumed they were talking about Starcraft. (Like usual.) Then they started talking about sieging the hive. I assumed they were talking about Siege Tanks. Then they went to discuss heavy armor. I assumed they were talking about the armor type.

They talked some more about "gorges" and "skulks" and other things I didn't recognize. As well as the commander stuff. I finally asked them "What UMS are you guys talking about?" and they informed me that they weren't talking about Starcraft at all.

They then told me all about NS. What it was, about this website, how it was like, etc. So I started downloading it. I had dial up at the time, so it took a very long time. When I finally finished I joined their server (He had this for awile. Shame he quit and doesn't have the server anymore.) and started trying out things. It was cool running on walls and leaping through vents as an alien. After they were done teaching me aliens I was ready to try out the marines. They taught me how the marines work and about the commander. I tinkered around with the commander mode and found it an interesting (And beautiful.) enough mod to not uninstall.

I played NS usually on a daily basis until Steam came out. When Steam was installed it had a nasty habit of "moving" all the uneeded files that steam already uses and deleting them. This meant I couldn't play the older version of Counter-Strike on WON. That also meant I couldn't play NS. Steam was too much for my dial-up to handle online play, coupled with my 63 ram. So I left the NS scene.

I later aquired a 768Kbs cable connection and a 256 ram upgrade (Totalling 318 ram.) and began to play Counter-Strike on Steam again. I somewhat forgot about NS, since I hadn't played it in so long. So one day we're back in our little AIM chat taking yet another break from Counter-Strike and my friend brings up Natural-Selection again. He tells everyone how it works on Steam now. I quickly download NS and have been playing ever since.

How did you guys discover NS? Share your stories. =P

Sept 2002... A big-time gamer friend of mine (he was one of the original rangers in the Q1 films), told me and another co-worker about the mod. I looked into it, I thought it looked pretty neat but not that special..

Well they d/led it the first day, and came to work talking about the game style, and play. I got the impression that there were several indoor areas (like huts), and one massive outdoor cavern.

So I downloaded it that night.. and I've played it daily ever since. The things I was wrong about didn't bother me, the things I didn't know about intrugued me...

At the bus-stop, after school. A friend of mine said something like:
-"Have you heard of the new Half-Life mod? It's like Aliens vs Marines .... etc."

Later that day I called the same friend to ask what the mod was called. It was the golden days of 1.04 and I have been a fan to NS ever since (though the newest versions have been somewhat dissapointing).

I saw someone playing it at my local lan center euphnet. I watched him play for about 30 mins as a gorge in 1.04. then I tried it and I was like. Whoa Cool, I can build stuff!

I read a thread in my (at the time) TFC clan's forums, during the summer of 02', about two mods they stumbled on. One was Science and Industry, which I had already played a year or so back, and one was a mod in the making, Natural-Selection. I read up on NS, and it sounded like a stupid idea, so I ignored it. Luckily, I was at a Halloween LAN and ran across a friend playing it and trying to figure out what's going on. I was interested, so he put it on a CD for me and I tried it out when I got home. Two years later I'm still playing it, so I guess I changed my mind about it

PCGamer April Issue 2003 CD. I was on dialup(was all the way till 3 weeks before 1.1/2.0 release), so I couldn't get most mods. Being this was on the CD, I could. I did. I lurved. I only quit for a little while when Call of Duty came out(great game), but soon enough returned thanks to the lack of teamwork. Once you go NS, you don't go back.

I had heard about it and visited the site. At the time it looked like poo, and I wasn't interested. 2 years later or so, I think there were news on PHL... so, I went again, found it strangely familiar(obviously not remembering having been there before), started lurking the forums, and read the "Stories from the frontlines" thread...god....that thread was so awesome, because you didnt know how anything actually looked. I thought resource nodes were huge crystals at first.
Anyway. 2 months or so later, NS was released. I was so amazed. I remember bringing up the menu and being totally awed by the sound made when you choose an evolution. And other cool things. Then I went to the forums to see what was happening... and found that you have to register to get in! OMGWTH! Obviously I couldn't bear being without so I registered pronto. Didn't post much back then, IIRC.
And the rest, as they say, is history.(ie, boring long stories)

    YOU LIE!!!!!

Dude, Travis was talking about it BEFORE it came out. He showed us the teaser videos at lunch, remember? How geeky were we. We installed HL on a lab at school, and played NS at lunch. The firewall prevented us playing externally, so we played 4v4 or 5v5 games. I must say, It is hard as a commander to have a strat when the aliens can hear your strat, or can turn their head and look and see where you are. We didnt' even have enough HL keys to add mroe people, as more wanted to play. I mean, We only had so many computers! We even convinced our 50 year old teacher to play a game once. It was quite amusing. She was disgusted by the hive and the skulks. her venture into NS didn't last too long.
And amazingly, during the time of playing NS at lunch, I managed to pick up a girlfriend....Weird...

CGM had a feature about the best free games or something.

So I looked up some reviews on gamefaqs, and was informed it was a starcraft-esque game with uber graphics.

    Playing it since.

Like a week before its release, a site (I think planethalflife.com) was reporting that the manual of NS was released. I read the manual, loved it, and downloaded it on Halloween.

Saw NS being reviewed in UK PC gamer ages ago 1.04 days. Installed it when i was back on my 56k from the cd, started playing and fell in love with the team work and ns_nancy back then.... awww they were the good days. I also used it to get away from CS for a bit and played it with all the other mods like DoD, FA, etc etc.

    Been playing ever since

I cant remember how I found the game, but i do rmeember my first game. It was the day of the release on ns_eclipse with a ping of 500 and a fps of about 5.

    Marines won.

But since performance was so bad I stopped playing. A week later I came back for an "epic" 3h long game on ns_nothing as marine. Due to a bug int he res system, marines got almost unlimited res and proceeded to fill the map with turrets. Completely fill it. You could walk from marine start to generator room ontop of the turrets, against which onos after onos after onos threw themselves and died.

    Muahaha.

DeathJester (a semi-well known 2.0 UK player I believe) told me how great this NS mod was when I met him playing AvP2, and how it had the same marines vs aliens idea. He stopped playing , I didnt.

I remember they were advertising it for a while at the primary CS mapping website. I eventually tried it out. I love it, but it was bugged as **** at the time. I got into it anyhow, however.

Friend told me about it over the phone, loved it the first second I played it.

Which reminds me, one of my friends was at the local cyber cafe, playing some NS. (Almost everyone there is a 1337-CSPlayer by the way) A guy walks up to him and says, "What kind of a Counter-Strike mod is that?"

I personally probably would've laughed at his face, but that's just me.

First time i ever heard of this mod was when it was back in development. There was no media, no screenshots.

And seeing as mods back in those days rarely succeeded, i just skimmed through NS just like any mod.

I originally thought it was some sort of modern-day marines vs. aliens in a jungle like in the Predator movie...

    Heh. Obviously not the case.

I played tfc for a long time and then when this came out I decided to try it and I enjoyed it. I quit back when 2.0 first came out though, although i've been thinking of giving it another whirl now.

I saw it reviewed in the Aussie mag PCPowerPlay and figured I'd give it ago cus CS was getting boring and DoD was alright but didnt really grab me.

heard about it from some freinds involved in tfc, dled it (2.0) and didn't like it all that much, went back to being a cs nub. played out cs, then went to dod, played out dod, and came back to ns(3.2?) and have been here since.

The old VERC had an ad in the corner about it about 1 year before it came out and I saw it said "Cool" then forgot about it. Apparently it was to only ad it showed because the site was moving over to the new VERC so about a week or so before the release, I decide click the ad again and go "W00t it's coming out" Been here ever since. I just don't post much, yet I check the forums 3 times a day at least.

Well, my good friends, I have been a conscious contributor of thoughts to this fine mod since it was first announced on PHL around 2001, I think...
