Come if interested
Right now I am getting a new machine built and an old one repaired. What I am going to do with the new one is use it as an NS dedicated server here and there and I feel it should have a great capability for a high player capacity.
It is going to have this in it:
Pentium 4 3.2 GHz on an ASUS P400 800 MHz FSB
512 MB DDR RAM
Windows XP Pro
Cable @ 3.0 Mbps Download / 380 Kbps Upload
Anyone think this will be enough for 20 players if it's dedicated? It won't be up 24/7, but it will be pretty often and if it can support 20, which I think it should be able to, anyone want to make a clan?

Also maybe get some more ram Another 512 would be good imo
I'd suggest more RAM and maybe 16. I think it could do 20 at 800, but you'd be pushing it, and it wouldn't be very pleasant for a lot of players (those who are far off or have slower connections). I think it could run 16 fairly nicely, though.
16 is enough players for any mod really when you think about it. You don't really need 10 onos running around, that's for sure.
What do you guys think about 14 players though?
Running through the calculations, it says not to let your maxrate go under 3072 when determining slots, and 14 players makes 3474 so it passes.
Do you guys see this and agree or what? The more help I can get the better the server will be in terms of pleasure. I'm talking round the clock admin controll to get rid of pesty players (when the server is not in downtime).
*UPDATE*
I'm not really sure if it'l make a huge difference, but I think the server is actually going to have to be made listenserver, or on a crappier comp.
My other comp, which I was going to play from actually has no sound card, so I'd prefer not to miss out on that asset. How are these specs for hosting:
1.7 GHz 100 MHz FSB
512 Unknown RAM (not DDR, PC133, or SD - wierd huh?)
Windows XP Pro
Same connection.
as you were,
SM5
But at least I'll be a kickass gamer on this new machine. Muha!
Actually, a T1 line is 1.5 Mbps up and down, it is expensive though.
and a listenserver typically runs more poorly than a dedicated server (if i'm not mistaken).
I wouldn't abandon it just yet. =P
14 would be great, to me. I typically play on 14-20 player servers. when the teams get larger it becomes serioiusly detrimental to aliens, and marine teams lose focus even more quickly.
but it seems you've given up on the idea.. ah well. want to go in on a rented server?
800kbps is only 100 kilobytes per second, which isn't very much for a large server considering each player can easily pull 5kB/s (5kB/s * 20 players = 100kb/s, maxed)
also this isn't 1998 anymore, T1 lines are nothing. most home cable connections easily reach if not surpass T1 speeds
