Hmm Necrosis' alien pack is locked in the .rar, what's the pass? :/
  • NecrosisNecrosis The Loquacious Sage Join Date: 2003-08-03 Member: 18828Members, Constellation
Heh, just in case anyone else comes to the thread with the same question, the pass should be in the Readme file within my RAR file.

Anyone SHOULD be able to access that without needing a password (otherwise it makes the RAR pretty pointless, hehe). Please note the important text near the password.

try reading the "readme" file. posting your question in the right thread might help, too...

on·topic: the only thing i might like to see implemented would be a static break added on to the beginning and end of the voice samples that don't have them, just for the sake of consistency. however, i know how tedious doing that would be, and i definitely consider it a minor detail.

    Good point, l0tus.

Actually, that difference reflects my inner conflict over what to do with the voices. But I'll probably make the natural-sounding line more radio-like by mixing in ALIENS radio static and adding clicks to the beginning and end of the clips.

I've been playtesting my new swipe and gore sounds just now and I don't like 'em one bit. For now, I recommend using the alts.

Yeah i'm using this now, and it's all frieking awesome Marr
My only crits would be similar to what l0tus mentioned, a bit of consistency in the rine voices. Also i think some of the rine voices come out really fast (and as such are barely audible in terms of understanding what they were saying). I'm not really sure what can be done about it. The other thing that bothers me just a little is the mg sound, it sounds a little...what's the word...shallow. It needs a bit more grunt behind it (same with the hmg sound i think - i haven't had a chance to use it yet though). I'll try the alts out see if i like them any better (may just be a personal thing).

Oh btw this is one of the few threads i get butterflies when i see a new post by marr

Yeah, finding lines from the movie that meant the same things as NS's radio was a huuuge challenge. I scoured the DVD for good ones, but so many are obscured by music or other actors' lines. For example, in the APC after the first confrontation, Hicks clearly says "Can someone get me a first aid kit?" but Vasquez exclaims the f-word right in the middle too loudly for me to edit out . So I had to skip lots of good ones.

In my next update, I'll re-equalize & add radio static and opening/closing clicks to all the voices for consistency. Maybe some amplification, too.

By the way, does anyone know of a version of ALIENS without the soundtrack? I could do SO much more without a full symphony playing in the background.

QUOTE

The other thing that bothers me just a little is the mg sound, it sounds a little...what's the word...shallow. Thanks for the feedback. I tried to make the LMG sound light and the HMG sound heavy, but I guess I went a bit too far. When listening to the ALIENS DVD, I personally can't tell the difference between the smartgun and the pulse rifle sounds (like the burst Vasquez fires after screaming "Let's rock!"). But when you're an onos it sucks to to get blown away by a squad of HMGs you thought were LMGs. So some difference is necessary.

At any rate, I've already enhanced the low-range bass frequency (40-300 Hz) of my LMG sound locally and will include it in my next update. For now, try using the ALTs and let me know if they're any better.

No chance of using cooledit to remove the various channels?

QUOTE

No chance of using cooledit to remove the various channels?

I typically remove the spectrum above 5000Hz and below 1000Hz to make a normal sound into a typical "radio" sound. Most orchestral instruments are within that range, so removing them is tricky. It's possible to remove music if it's a single tone, but soundtracks often feature lots of chords. I can't remove them unless I isolate the notes individually. I'm no musician and such feats are beyond my skill.

In a nutshell, I've been removing music as best I can but there are some lines which are obscured by music of so many tones that I can't possibly isolate and suppress them all. I'd love to use cool lines like Hicks' "Let's go, marines!" and Hudson's "We're on an express elevator to hell!" but for the music.

Its just that CoolEdit has an option for isolating that type of noise, I used it to clean up some Megatron quotes from Transformers (for a long abandoned UT Megatron soundpack).

    Damn good soundpack, good work!

    Too bad consistency blocks sounds

Hey Marr, excellant soundpack. I'm a DoD sound guy, and the only thing that seems really hard to get sounding right are the pulse rifle and smartgun sounds. I think its because the half life engine does'nt have a loop fire and only has single shots wavs. I think maybe the fire sounds need to be replaced by shorter wavs. If your taking stuff from the movies, theres a part where hicks looks in the ceiling to find many aliens, and as he falls from the ceiling, he fires a few bursts. His very first burst is really short. Sounds like 1-2 bullets. I think that one might work perfectly. Just a small suggestion. If i had a program to rip from DvDs, i'd give it a go.....but excellant pack, nonetheless.
  • AngelSaphireAngelSaphire Join Date: 2004-10-20 Member: 32374Members
Nice very nice! but some questions...why is "Thats it man Game over man" a taunt??? Some of the sounds should be replaced, but other then that GREAT WORK!!
  • MarrMarr Join Date: 2002-12-11 Member: 10582Members
Thanks for the feedback, everyone. This sound pack has gotten so big that I can't keep track of everything by myself anymore...

QUOTE

Its just that CoolEdit has an option for isolating that type of noise, I used it to clean up some Megatron quotes from Transformers (for a long abandoned UT Megatron soundpack).

I've used CoolEdit a long time ago, but I can't find it anymore. It looks like they got bought out by Adobe?

QUOTE

I think its because the half life engine does'nt have a loop fire and only has single shots wavs. .... Thanks for the tip. It's good to hear from a fellow sound artist. I wish that the NS weapons sounds worked more like the welder, with a 'start' sound, a looping sound that's played as long as you hold the button down, and an 'end' sound that's played right when you let go. That's how it works in AvP2, and it does a pretty good job mimicing the pulse rifles.

I found and extracted the 1-2 shot burst that Hicks fires in that scene, and will do some internal testing with it. I'll let you know how it works out. The music is pretty loud then, but the clip is so short (0.2 seconds) that it might not be noticeable after I tinker with the equalization.

QUOTE

...why is "Thats it man Game over man" a taunt??? Thanks for the feedback, but that's not a taunt. And if you could give me specific instances, it would really help me out. Here's my radio script right now:

    Acknowledged:
    Hicks: Roger.
    Hudson: Affirmative.
    Hudson: Okay, I'm on it.
    Apone: Uh, Roger!

    Need orders:
    Hicks: You seein' this alright?
Hicks: Ready to rock 'n roll.
    Apone: You readin' this?
    Apone: Sir, you copyin' this?

    Cover me:
    Hicks: Stay frosty and alert.
    Apone: Look sharp!

    Covering:
Hicks: Can't afford to let one of those bastards in here.
Hudson: Don't worry, we'll protect you.
Apone: Alright, don't bunch up. Stay loose.

    Taunt:
Hudson: How do I get out of this chicken-*#@^ outfit?
Hicks: I like to keep this handy...for close encounters.
Apone: There's some juicy colonist daughters we have to resuce from their virginity.
Hudson: Let's just bug out and call it even, okay? What are talking about this for?

    Need Medpack:
Hudson: That's it, man. Game over, man! It's game over!
Hudson: This can't be happening, man. This isn't happening!

    Need Ammo:
    Hudson: Those ammo counters go...
    Hicks: Gun's down 50%
Frost: Hey, what the hell are we supposed to use, man, harsh language?

    In Position:
    Apone: Check those corners!
    Apone: Nobody touch nothin'!

    Enemy Sighted:
Hudson: There's movement all over the place!
    Hudson: Movement!
    Hudson: Movement, signal's clean.

    Let's Go:
Hicks: Alright, people. Let's move like we got a purpose.
Hudson: Come on, come on. Let's get the hell outta here.
Apone: Let's go people, they ain't payin' us by the hour. Let's go, head 'em out!

    All Clear:
    Hicks: Nobody's home.
Hudson: Sir, uh, we have a negative situation here.

As you can see, I'm really hurting for "In position" "Cover me" and "Covering". (For ammo and health requests, the comm will hear the "Soldier needs something" messages anyway.)

What do you think? Let m know which ones need fixing pr are too incomprehensible.

The rest is good, but this sound more like he;s afraid and wants to leave, and less like a taunt

Pity you can't have "Say again? All after incinerators?"

Enemy sighted could be "It's game time, people"

As for cover me, what about, "lay down a suppressing fire"??

Still, lay down a suppressing fire is an awesome line

You're right, Necro. I was confusing "Cover me" with "Follow me". :/

    And, in other news...

    11/4/2004 NEW VERSION UPLOADED

Download above or HERE (53 MB zip file)

    Changelog:

    - (Untested) I noticed some door closing sounds in Hera, Metal, and other maps were using the default HL sounds, so I replaced them ("doorclose*.wav" 5 through 8)

    - New Pulse Rifle sound! Mixed different firing sounds from the AvP2 game. Really kicks a$&, I think you'll like it. The previous version renamed to mg-1ALT.wav if you want to compare.

    - Slightly shortened Smart Gun sound for better performance. It's about as short as I can make it...

    - Increased mid-bass Alien sounds for more realistic effect.

    - Added radio static and start/stop clicks to remaining marine vox sounds, so now they're all consistent. New taunt, too.

-Added squeaky little movement sound (facehugger) to the gorge.

    - Inserted my own custom voice recordings for the "covering" and "in position" categories since there aren't any good lines from the ALIENS movie

    - Tweaked Alien weapon sounds and impacts.

    - Added Tykjen's thrilling gamestartup.mp3. Previous version remains as gamestartupALT.mp3 if you'd prefer that one.

a.) this is not the thread for that pack. posting in the right place might help. b.) try reading the readme file, since you obviously haven't. c.) reading a thread before posting in it might also be a good idea. about 20 other people have asked this question, and it's been answered almost just as many times - hell, it's even been answered in this, the (incorrect) thread, more than once. people should no longer have to waste their time responding to this question...
