Mental Mind Frames.

A decussion about it.
No Flaming Allowed in Thread.

I think mental mind frames are the keys to doors in life. And also with in games as well.

I try to mold my personal mindset towards improvement and learning.

For example I've noticed setting up certain rules in my mind has helped me become a better player.

Take the Blame personally.
I try to accept inwardly (not outwardly) personal responsibility for every game (round) that I play. I take a look back at what went wrong and what went right. I record what I did right. Then come to try to come up with solutions on how to prevent the wrong from happening again. Then I look at both and ask myself: What could I have done differently that round that would have created better result?

I have yet to come up with nothing.

My mind set wasn't always like this.

When I first started playing CS I remember having an unproductive mindset, and I never looked at for I didn't realize it was holding me back. Like sometimes I would notice people complaining about Team stacking, hackers etc. So of course I would do the same not knowing any better. It seemed I was always on the losing team, and I would blame other things for my team losing.

One day I met this player, and I remember him saying this. "Don't complain about you team sucking, it is always your fault as to why your team is losing. If your team can't hold its own, you pull the weight. That’s the only person you have control of."

That one conversation opened up new doors for me, and made me a much better mind set wise. I start pushing myself allot harder, and stop making excuses. And at that moment, I started to truly learn. When another player did better than me, I didn't think OMG HAX any more. I actually watched what they did. I asked myself what are they doing different than me? Then using those answers and copying them into my own play style. When the teams were stacked, I'd join the other team and try to become the anti stack. If someone appeared to be hacking, my mind set was. "I don’t know if they are hacking or not. If their not then I'm capable of the same type of aim and movement. I will assume they are not hacking and push myself to be that good" I eventually got my aim to amazing to the point that I would get accused of hacking even though I didn't. I went through allot of improvement in just one month with the new mind frame.

I eventually found the utmost of greatest mods known as Natural-Selection . I first started playing ns during 1.04. I only played for about 2-3 weeks of 1.04 it was pretty fun and I liked it allot. I took me about 2 hours using my mindset to learn the basics of ambushing. I remember playing eclipse and getting regeneration where I would pop out of a spot. Eat a marine, and then run back to my spot and regeneration. Around SSA I think. This was of course watching other skulks ambushing and such. Eventually I left then came back again near the end of 2.01. That’s when I really began to get into NS.

During my 2.01 era I remember playing and people saying, "Such and such is so unbalanced" etc. I started saying the same thing seeing it myself. I also started to notice that every time I played more often than not my team would lose. People started yelling out. "Stupid stacking n00bs" "Icon stax!!" etc. I noticed my score was worse than when I played 1.04. Then it dawned on me that I allowed a negative mind frame virus to enter my mental state. I quickly started to clean up the damage and reprogrammed my mind into its older state. I started watching players again, pushing myself hard to aim better and be smarter. Ambush more. And I came into the belief that the game is balanced I just don’t see it, so I will figure out away to over come the problem. And soon my score started rising and quickly it did. I learned how to fade which helped me pull the team even more so.

Soon (around 3.0 era) I started to try and organize the teams, get people to listen, etc., which in turn brought even more fun games. And when my team got beat, I tried to analyze what went wrong, and how to improve the strategy and myself, and improve the tactics of motivating people as well. Soon I noticed the teams I was on winning more.

Well that pretty much ends my story I thought was important to share. As a player all you need to worry about is playing the game. Keep your mind off if something is imbalanced or not keep open that there may be a tactic out there that counters that imbalance. Or when you notice you’re always on the losing team, it may be your fault and if you want to stop losing push yourself a little, and stay open to new ideas and strategies.

I know granted were all human and emotions will always get the better of us at one point or another, but I feel that it shouldn't stop us from learning. Heck even right now as I have typed this, I realize that I let my mind set slip some as well, and right now am working to fix it again.

thx for listening and I hope this may help a few people

When I actually care about my gaming experience for the night or whatever the duration of my gaming session, I always try to apply this mindset. My score/experience is always 2-3 times better than when I'm just playing because the game is there.
I should do this more often.

Your perspective (frame of mind) often matters the most in life. Some people spend their whole lives making excuses or blaming others... trapped in a mental jail of their own making.

It's a valuable lesson... freedom from self-imposed limitations.

And people say you can't learn anything from playing games... kudos buddy!

changing your perspective or frames of mind are like trasporting yourself into a diffrent reality, for beliefs are what we exsist in...

Often I'll get angry at my team, like "I'll defend so and so, so you guys just have to defend that area"

It gets annoying, especially when they start defending nonvital/already defended areas.

I don't think personal skill can alter this much, you can only be in one place at one time.

My answer? Play the game, have fun, try your hardest, learn from your mistakes and learn to capitalise on the common ones of others. You can't ask anyone to do anything more, and they shouldn't expect any more from you.

I certainly understand the mindset you're talking about. There are many times when as a marine my aim gets lazy and I get killed. Sometimes I get all ticked off and say things aloud like "omg" or "WTH" but that's just a way of venting, normally I realise this straight after and say something to honor their kill like "I didn't think you would have got me there, nice one" because otherwise it's just rude.

As a commander the responsibilities are even greater. It can be extremely frustrating when your marines can't do something quite simple but ultimately it's your fault if you fail because you're using the wrong methods given the tools you have. Some games I can sit back at the end and say we did all we could but others you are left completely cold. It's quite a hard emotion to deal with and something that happens in real life all the time too.

Ultimately you have to play the game how you want to and accept that others might not play it in the same way as you. Don't be the kid who takes his football home because the other team scores.

Edit: By the way, nice post, it's good to have these kinds of discussion

I also wanted to say that by you accepting resposibility for the team, that others may as well. but it has to start somewhere. imigine a team where everyone accepted the blame and resposibility for everything, and everyone tried to carry the weight and then some by focusing on what should get done.
Im not shuggesting everyone become a mini comm. but I think you get the jist.

    Team work starts with yourself.

What im also trying to say is that every job is important, like in NS fades usually get alot of credit because they show up more on the score board but a fade is nothing with out proper support. in other words all jobs are inportant from the base builder. to the rez getter, to gorges to fades, etc. but you still try and pull as much as you can.

People who want to take responsibility will do so.

People who don't want to take responsibility won't.

Nothing you can say or do can change that.
Scream all you want, or be the best team player evar, but nothing's going to change unless your teammates are inclined to change in the first place.

Hate to say it but sometimes I think part of why teamplay is so hard on pubs is because people just don't realize any of this.

I think dwelling kills your frame of mind too. You know what I mean, after a loss some guy just can't stop whining about it even into the next round. They grieve and point fingers and grieve some more blaming just about everybody but themselves... man what a way to kill other people's mind frame as well as their own. This isn't limited to "newbies" either, just about everyone is guilty of dwelling from time-to-time.

In fact, I find pubs have the most teamwork when a group of people respect each other enough that you all seem to be friends all without really trying but just working together. It's when that meta-connection is established that even when teams are totally mixed up in the next round you can have good teamplay and a tight game because the respect is present between everyone on the server and even in different teams the teamplay flows that much easier.

You know that feeling when after the game ends and everyone is all, "GG!" and "That was a great game GG all!" it's like mutual respect for each regardless of winner and loser because everyone participated in creating that good tight game. Truly satisfying and in these moments it is when vets and newbies can stand together on the same map and have fun. Good teamplay pub games is an equalizer is so many ways.

I mean, that is why I like online teamplay games. It's fun to get together with a bunch of strangers who have volunteered themselves to a virtual conflict and work together to solve it. I know, people say if you want real good teamplay go to PUGs or join a clan. Well besides the fact that some people don't have enough virtual world time to commit to things like that there is a particular thrill and satisfaction you get from playing a good teamplay pub game.

I guess what I'm trying to say is the establishing of relationships, the adapting to all our various skill levels and skill-sets, the growing of the team that gives me that truly EPIC fun feeling.

    Just dropping a few thoughts.

You are very right. After a game like that if I notice other people going on and on. i try to say through the mic. "oh well. new round" that usualy gets to to stop. or at least slow down.

But even though not all people realize this. Its a good time to spread the word I feel because the NS community is growing, and I belive this type of mindset will help create the type of feeling of togetherness which should help the game more so. and create better games in the long run.

What you are saying is completely and utterly obvious and can be summed up as "do your best". Which will of course contain as a subset, analyze something as soon as it goes wrong, if something goes right, that's a keeper. A way to analyze strategy quicker and to gather new ideas is to discuss it with someone who has played tried similar things before and learn from their experience instead of repeating their errors.

Then you can dress it up in so many words and call it "mindset", "frame of mind", tell your life story and try to sell me snake oil for all I care, that's all that I see in your post and it's nothing revolutionary.

Unfortunetly, actively trying to do my best has allways failed me, I find I play much better when I don't even care that I'm playing at all, just day dream playing, as long as I'm not the commander of course.

No no no, that's not how you do it! You have to dress it up in a lot of claims that can't be discredited without a whole lot of effort and if you really want to sell it you need to sneak some speculative/out right bogus science and some FUD in there.

Claiming that it's 'Natural' is allways popular, allthough it means nothing because even nuclear power plants, genetic modifications and mutants are natural and it's not a regulated word with a strict definition(at least not when it comes to food, where anything can be claimed to be 100% natural).

And get people who have used your product and can 'verify' your claims with some nice juicy anecdotal evidence(the best kind of evidence!) even though they just got better as the natural course of their illness or thanks to the placebo effect(this effect makes verifying any claims without randomized double blind studies allmost impossible. Certainly you CANNOT judge for yourself if something works due to this and other confounding factors unless the treatment is increadibly effective). Oh, and 'energy' is another often used for mischeivous purposes, don't forget to mention it either.

But whatever you do, don't do what Carbolic Smoke Ball Co. did with their carbolic smoke ball(a rubber ball filled with phenol(C6H5OH) that is sprayed as a fine mist of particles through a mesh when you squeeze the ball, it's a rather toxic white powder sometimes used in paint thinners) and make promises that you cannot squirm your way out of in court should you have to:

"£ 100 reward will be paid by the Carbolic Smoke Ball Company to any person who contracts the increasing epidemic influenza, colds or any disease caused by taking cold, after having used the ball three times daily for two weeks according to the printed directions supplied each ball. £ 1000 is deposited with the Alliance Bank, Regent Street, shewing our sincerity in the matter.

"During the last epidemic of influenza many thousand carolic smoke balls were sold a preventives agains this disease, and in no ascertained case was the disease contracted by those using the carbolic smoke ball.

One carbolic smoke ball will last a family several months, making it the cheapest remdy in the world at the price of 10s., post free. The ball can be refilled at a cost of 5s. Address, Carbolic Smoke Ball Company, 27 Princes Street, Hanover Square, London."

BTW, this page is hillarius, radium and radon are 'natural' right? Certainly it's been in drinking water as a contaminant, oh and mineral water and health spa's and stuff to, I know, lets just assume it's heatlhy.(radioactive tooth paste is my favorite, and this stuff was made as late as during the second world war(though why they did it should certainly be questioned)."Use toothpaste with thorium! Have sparkling, brilliant teeth—radioactive brilliance!". The radium suppositories "FOR RESTORING SEX POWER" are also kinda funny).

Is that an attempt at saying something without the burden of taking responsibillity for it?

Still don't see it. Being positive IS part of trying your best, giving up and whining is counter productive, do we really need to involve the 'zen' stuff or whatever that is?

That's a low blow, I can just as well say the same about you and imply that I know I'm right but don't care to explain why you are wrong, but I'm not gonna(see, I learned that little trick from hawthorne ).
