I have been a long time follower of ns. since before the release of version 1.

This is this first time I have posted on this board in ages because I lost interest in it. I believe this game has lost all its originality. I played it for the first time in ages and didnt like it at all.

Sorry about the flame, but I am genuinely curious as whether or not people actually prefer the current NS to the old version one days.

Opinions please.

I had more fun in 1.04 days. The games were generally more fun, to me that is.

(blah blah blah fades jp hmg blah blah)

What are the major differences between these versions?

What I find funny is that in 1.04 everyone was so annoyed with it and hated it, when 2.0 came out everyone was so happy they could finally stop playing the old cropey version. Now so many people are complaining because they want 1.04 back.

A few big differences

- 1 hive could only use up to Lerk
- 2 Hives could use fade
- 3 hives could use Onos
- Fade had Acid Rocket at one hive (blink at second which made you actually teleport)
- Many people could fly unlimited with jetpacks due to a bug
- HMG's were way overpowered

Like that sort of.

I like the current version. Sure, I have some nostalgic memories of 1.0x, but it's because the game was new and intriguing, at the time.

Theres been loads of threads on this sort of thing - a pretty general consensus is that yes, 1.04 rocked, and we want those huge fun games. But we also want to keep the huge number of positive changes that have been made as NS has progressed.

Best of both worlds please, thanks.

bry made me realize with his 1.04 steam install why 3.0x is more fun than 1.0x

I think the "more hives = higher lifeforms" put more stress on the Kharaa, so they HAD to push on. Witch might make the game more thrilling.

I'm still enjoying NS, I play it since 2.0.
Though it isn't new for me anymore, I still have fun times.

I quit a long time ago, it's dieing. Pub play really does suck with the 2nd hive coming at 10 mins, along with bunnyhopping fades ect. And clan scene is in a rut atm, with no real good leagues, it's dieing.

90% of the time humans hate change. The percent is a ball park figure but when you think about it, it makes an awful lot of sense.

The first version of NS I played was 1.04 (About 2 days after its release I think). I loved it, and I played it non-stop for several months. I was playing it non-stop until the day of release of v2.0... at which point it was suddenly a completely different game. I hated it. So I stopped.

I lost interest in NS for a few months, and then came back a couple of months ago and I find it enjoyable again.

This version is different to the old version. People who join this one tend to really enjoy it, much the same way people who joined late in 1.04 enjoyed it even though many of the 'experienced' players didn't.

things in the older versions, i liked more,
but there also things in the newer versions i like more...

if we could take out a mix of both, old and new, there, the best of NS.

In older versions, aliens could hold an area better. It wasn't a constant skulk slaughter with the prayer that someone GOOD would go fade and save the alien team.

Really, I think the lack of building and the horrible alien team balance curve is what I dislike most about the current build. (I remember when an onos was actually BETTER then a fade.)

The most fun I had with NS was during the 1.04 days.I doubt that Id be able to go back now tho.NS is slowly getting back on track after the horrible derailing that was 2.0 .I quite like 3.0 and hope it will get even better with every new version.

But that's illogical. Once the marines have 2 hives locked, its game over and you might as well F4 right away to save some time. I've been within an inch of spiking an outpost into harmlessness(pg+tf) having started spiking shortly after the hive was taken, and right then, the marines utterly pwned our hive. You don't have enough time to take a hive back without bilebomb, metabolise, or onos, before the marines have enough stuff to destroy you.
Maybe an incentive to defend the hive locations, but people already do that as good as they can because they quite simply do not want to lose. The reason it was more fervent in 1.04 was because there was a higher "skilled player" ratio. Or the average skill level was lower, I dont know...

Like you I was a long time follower of NS since before it was released.

I became really addicted to NS, watched Clan matches, became a casual forum goer, and posted my feedback and observations as honestly as I could without being whiny or flamey.

Then, like you, I stopped playing NS. For me it was after 3.0 came out. I played 3.0 for a little while but it twindled and then I just stopped playing. I continued to get Clan matches off Amped for a bit.

I'm not sure if it was the people (no more teamwork, lots of immaturity, whining and game spoiling COMMs) or the evolution of the game (focus on Combat and getting new players when Classic still had major problems). On the official forums Flay and the Devs didn't post as much, even as people dicussed many important issues related to balance in the Beta Forums (Polls were made with huge turn-out and feedback but no response).

I don't expect the NS Devs to hit a homerun with every version but I do expect them to attempt to move the game closer to their proposed concept of teamplay. I just felt like they stopped progressing in that direction and I lost interest...

...perhaps not completely, I still drop by to see how NS is doing.

I'm not gonna be all dramatic and weepy about some love lost. I had a good time and then we went our seperate ways but NS made a big enough impact on me as a gamer that I will give it another go.

The challenge is creating a teamplay experience in pub games, nobody said it was easy, but with big risks come big rewards and who doesn't like a little risk taking.

Been playing since 2.0. I've been happy with it the whole time. Sure there are annoying times, and the learning curve is steep, and it really is unenjoyable for a while if you're new (or coming back from a long hiatus, *hinthint*). I think people who say they want 1.0x back just really want the "cool factor" back, the feeling you get when you play a unique game for the first time. Yeah, well, NS isn't new anymore. Not much the devs can do to change that, except for completely changing the game. Which wouldn't "fix" NS, it would be making a different game. Whatever, if you're unhappy with NS gameplay, that it's repetitive and whatnot....compare it to a game like CS. CS is like the definition of repetition in gaming, but lots of people still find it fun. Obviously repetition doesn't lead to lack of fun. You have to make your own fun. This unfortuantely often depends a lot upon the people you are playing with, but hey maybe if NSGuides gets big enough the flow of new players can be trained a little. Hopefully. As for making your own fun.....I just played out my first gorge rush in months yesterday, and it was damn fun .

And NS isn't dying, at least not according to the Steam charts .

Oh yeah, off to play NS (just fixed my crappy framerates thnx to some stuff I read on this board )

[edit]Just got back from a game I played with two completely new players. I mean like just-dled-the-game-new. I had to leave before the game (which I was using as a training game) was over, but I'm fairly certain both of them will continue playing. I also referred them to this site, so yay for extended learning. Favorite quote from them: "This is nothing like counter-strike." Yay!

I disagree. The game used to be so much more epic. Building stuff, setting stuff up. Making plans and attacks etc. I got all this on a public server MOST of the time and it was awesome. The game had such a better atmosphere of being scared of aliens or marines, or sentry guns.

The lack of buildings and the new changes the game is just so generic. When I was playing last night I was talking to a guy about the changes on the server.

He said:

"nah man, this new version is way better cos its just CS with aliens"

I pretty much agree but it doesnt make it better at all...

There was a time when this sort of thing didnt happen and it was epic. freaking epic. I remember playing rounds that lasted hours. I remember playing this game for 8 hours. Now I can barely play for 10 minutes.

As for jp/hmg rushes. A good alien team could beat this anyway... somewhat...

What buildings have they removed? None that I remeber. NS kicks assi. I have been playing since V1 and it just keeps getting better. Currently the only thing that pissess me off is the GL reload bug (if you hit fire it resets to 0 ammo..very sucky). CS sux. Woopie I have 10 differnet types of Machine guns but no start at all! Minimium team work! NS is the bomb, if you don't like it quit for a couple of months and then come back. You simiply need a break to clear your head.

I hope your joking. In older versions marines would slaughter skulks by mere ramboing.. the only reason they held area 'better' is because they had MAYBE two areas they could actually get to before getting shot.

+ the fact that there usually was mass oc spam because oc's were needed to prevent jp/hmg rush... even though that was still pretty iffy .

Amen.

The major things that have changed are:

-Res For Kill: No more suicidal style aliens, and no more skulk rush at the beginning of the game. That was fun. Has totally changed the play style of the game.

-Prices: Everything is so much cheaper, makes the game so much shorter, not cool!

-Hive Restrictions: Eliminates the "epic" hive battles, second hive going up kind of things. That was fun.

-New Onos and other lifeforms: The onos is now a pus** that has become a hit and run attacker. He cant hold his own anymore. Stomp, eat, run away like a pansy, OO SCARY, like the fat ladies in McDonalds, my god.

-Res Sharing: No more one gorge. Bases dont go up fast enough, aliens dont feel like they have a center .. "man" involved, someone they must protect, sort of like a VIP game within' the game.

-Waypoints: No more of those helpful waypoints! Build here, enemy here, protect here, weld this, etc.. what happened!? (my pet peeve!)

-Fade Blink: TOTALLY UNATMOSPHERIC!! Hes mother-lovin' freakin' jesus! And wimpy acid rocket at hive43!

-Lerk: Hes changed. Now an annoying butthole that honostly doesnt help too much, as well as the flight model, which was better used for spikes.

This is just one of the many things that shouldnt have been touched. I've made a lot of threads on how this game is going down the wrong road in terms of classic NS, but apparently the devs have their ears plugged. Yeah, people arent complaining, but damn, you dont see anyone going "MAN 2.0 and BEYOND is SOOO much better than 1.0x!!! " more than complaints about how its actually -lost- its atmospheric potential. I just wish the devs would -start over- with all the bug fixes back to 1.04. Apparently they dont want to waste all that work, but they're only digging their hole deeper, and if they keep digging they wont be able to climb out soon enough.

YOU HAD TO BE ON A GOOD SERVER. Many, MANY communities had JP nerfs, and didnt allow JP/HMG rushing at ALL. (readyroom.org, RIP, my friend)

I completely agree. I am so sick of watching a "High level alien" such as the onos, run away from a bunch of LMG marines, I am also annoyed that some of the Third hive weapons arent powerfull enough, and yes...I miss the 3 hour long games. If this glaringly obvious stuff isnt fixed in the next version, I might just move on.
• HazeHaze O RLY? Join Date: 2003-07-07 Member: 18018Members, Constellation
Hive restrictions were there to balance out the fact that the onos was, yes, used to be a beast. Same with the fade. However, aliens could not fight back marines that had locked down two hives, and the developers took the wrong way to fix it by taking out hive restrictions. They should have done something else, like if you reach the second hive, you keep the fade evolution reguardless of how many hives you have. You have "achieved" the lifeform, now you keep it. This would let marines and aliens build up their tech overtime and not lose it when they lose structures, so as the game goes on, more advanced things pop up.

Now marines just have to camp a couple RTs and get 3/3 upgrades, which is -still- unbeatable if they get a heavy train rolling. What to the aliens honostly have thats an unbeatable piece of brute force that can just march and conquer? The answer? Nothing.
