What A Brilliant Mod

I've just started playing this game in the last week after hearing many good things about it. May I just say it's absolutely excellent; although of course I'm finding it hard to keep a positive kill-death ratio, but hopefully that'll change...maybe, lol.

Just a question though, will this mod be ported over to the Source engine?

K/D is absolutly unimportant in NS. Your 10 deaths as a skulk matter not if you were able to stop that siege by slowly wearing down a vital phase gate or turret factory. Gorges die all the time, but are often most vital to a win with skillful placement of OCs, RTs, and new hives. Fades may get all the kills, but where a fade can die, a skillful skulk can subvert - and that can mean much more then just killing a few marines.

<b>Redford</b> is right. Kill-death ratios don't matter. I'd rather comm a marine with a 1:2 ratio, who has built several RTs, than a marine with 2:1 ratio who won't listen to orders.

Also, it is extremely likely that NS will be ported to the Source engine. If the SDK is as good as Valve says it is, and as easy to port over from HL1, then I'd say it is 99% likely, that NS will go Source.

Agreed trying to comm people with scores of 20-2 in the first 5 mins, etc who think they are to pr0 to follow orders are just plain annoying. It's a shame that most of the people that do this are NS vets (or what ever they are called now, the ones with the yellow icons), I would of thought these people would play for the team more.

Anyhow the only reason deaths matter in ns is the RFK (Res for kills), which basically means every time someone dies the killer (if alien) gains 1-3 res, or if the killer is rine, his team will gain 1-3 res.

He still needs to work for the team, they just run around killing things, and do nothing in the way of building, if its a pg or a tf, they just run straight by.
  • TOmekkiTOmekki Join Date: 2003-11-25 Member: 23524Members
tf maybe, but only because if someone has played long enough to be able to aim that well he also propably doesnt believe in torrent strategies. however ive never seen a vet/good player run past an unbuilt pg.

Have to agree with Tomekki, someone who gets you 20 early kills is probably worth, not only for the res, but the time and lifeform setbacks to aliens.

It's true NS is a very team orientated game, but, bear in mind that K:D does matter to an extent. Constant suicide rushing can help your opposition get that next upgrade or lifeform just that crucial little bit faster than you.

Being a newbie, I have yet to pay the ns maps, and have only been playing the co maps to get used to the game (as I was instructed to by a good friend!) so God knows what all this stuff is about, lol, I will go play some ns maps later on though and thankyou for your replies.

I hate this type of argument. Use marines effectively. If they go 1-25, its a good indication you need to have them build a lot. When that marine runs out of base initially and kills 10 skulks before the arms lab is done building (Because EVERY commander builds an armslab right away, right? <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->), use him to slow aliens down. Let him camp the crap out of that long hallway and rack up res as stupid skulks charge him. Once everyone else catches up to him on the map then push forward and move out. By no means is the lowly builder or gorge useless, but the killing machines aren't "uber haxors that don't care about their team either". They serve a useful purpose just as the builder does.

Granted they can be useful, but when they just run around the map randomly killing, rather than putting presure on a specific area, thats when it gets annoying.

That in itself is less annoying (imo) than the fact that you can't shout at them for it. They are not directly damaging the team.
"OMG you n00b, stop killing the enemy"

(Exception being when you're sneaking into hive rooms, etc. )

I'd prefer to have a team of rambos than mindless builders really. Still, the ideal team has one UBER marine, and then a bunch of Joes. That way they learn, you have teamwork, and they are easy to co-ordinate.

And yes, NS is brilliant. Welcome to the forums. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Interestingly even though I'm always leading the squads I don't have a terrific score. Futhermore a score it totally irrelevant in NS, to the point where I am lobbying to get it permanently removed from the mod. Every thing in NS is for the teamwork. You live for your team, you die for you team. There is no such thing as a one man army in NS.

My suggestion is completely ignore your K:D ratios and just work on killing and not dying from something stupid. Also don't be afraid to die. Take one for the team, it's really annoying to loose a game because most of the people on your team aren't brave enough / paranoid that they will be killed. Play agressive, follow orders, teamwork. Just work on getting better at killing but FFS don't worry what the numbers are. Anyone who tell you otherwise is an idiot and a n00b. Have no fear newbie and be open-minded to learn and have fun.

Best rule, applies in everything really:
    <!--QuoteBegin-my dad+--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> (my dad)</td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->have fun and do your best<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Use this forum's search function. We cannot answer that until we get the SDK from Valve. Don't look at us, ask them. lol!

Welcome to NS, or should i say CO as you've yet to play NS!!! Beware you will be n for a shock when you get into NS as it is a completely different game to CO and as such inability to get K:D ratios in combat doesn't neccesarily translate in NS as the structure of the game is different. But like everyone says it's not that important anyway, working for the team is the main thing in NS.
