  New Info :
  Theres a trick to connect to the Server without changing too much.
  Rename all your maps !
  
  Example :
  ns_eclipse --> ns_eclipse_new
  
  Now you just need the right client.dll i think

  interesting. I would be curious to hear from others on this .. I can't try it out even though I have used HLSW for years .. because I just replaced my ns 2.01 with ns 3 beta 5 just a few weeks ago (wasn't going to but then I thought ... ya like I am ever going to play 2.01 again without won and I don't map ... some mappers told me keeping 2.01 on your system is a good idea but I forget why).
  
  But I do have the old patches ... Damn .. I just checked ... I only have all the beta 3 patches and installs.
  
  No 2.01.
  
  But I do have the old won install on an old drive of mine ...

  Yup, that is right! Not steam! Which means not replaced by beta 5 ns!
  
  I wonder if just zipping up this directory would help .. dunno

  I tried to join those servers since people are in them (even tho I ping 140 since I live in Canada) but as soon as I clicked on the server in HLSW and it did load up ns .. well .. the screen you get that is the console in the old version ... something went wrong.
  
  I got nothing. No text came up on the console and I couldn't type even retry or status or exit .. nothing .. I couldn't alt-tab out .. I couldn't even ctrl-alt-del .. I had to hit the reset button on my case ...
  
  So I don't know how those people joined that server ...

  Someone already ported 1.04 to steam so why try this?

  Which I think has a steam version some where.

  ya 2.01 does have a steam version (at least I think it did at least at first lol) but no one was bothering with those servers so all servers went the way of ns 3.0 beta whatever.
  
  I think tho this post has to do with playing without Steam I believe ... not sure. But that is the impression I got when I last posted on this thread.

  i have known about this for a long time. you dont need the won auth servers to play on won, its just its alot more difficult to connect to them now. also most every mod for hl is backwards compatible with won, and most every won mod is compatible with steam. (even ns 3.0, even the ns team says it isnt.) you cant play cs source or any of that on won for obvious reasons (its a different engine, lol.)
  
  and whats this ns 1.04 and 2.0x dont work on steam? uhh, i have ran both of those mods on my steam dedicated server and besides the console text of "outdated protocal" for ns 1.04 every 30 seconds, it works perfect.
  
  the only problem is that ns 2.0, ns 1.04 and ns 3.0 use the same folder names. if you change the name of the folder you will get an error such as "0xADDF34 DIVIDE BY ZERO"
  
  the simple way to fix this is to make a batch file that renames one of the 3 folders to NS and names the others something else while that version of ns is in use. you also have to compensate for the different versions of fmod.dll
  
  it really isnt that hard to work around its just time consuming and annoying.

  Add the IP in Natural Selection (WON), then connect or Activate console in HLSW then you will see messages while connecting to the Server like :
  cl_dlls is different as the servers one
  map is different...
  
  I can play in STEAM but my Steam is laggy, dont know why i tried everything, I want to play on this WON Server.
  
  It would be good if someone could open a WON-Fixed Server with the new Version of Natural Selection !!!
  
  You can Zip the Sierra/Half-Life/Ns aeehhh (dont know word, but you know what i mean XD) and send it . This will work 100%ly , but it also would work if you zip the Maps and CL_dlls (<!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> Thing <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> )

  i had a won ns 3.0 server for awhile, but i would get like 30 connects a day and noone would fully join the server so i shut it down and put steam ns 3.0 on.

  ya I saw that your server was up but the thing is no one knew how to join it when everyone went to Steam and you were still running a WON server.

  I did rename this but then I kept getting the DLL was different and so I just said F**K this and changed the name back and let beta 5 install over it.
  
  But I still have the old ns 2.01 for WON in another directory (pre-steam) as such:

  Besides that .. I have my steam NS (versions BOTH ns beta 4a and ns beta 5) installed here:

  The ns folder used to have the steam version of the 2.01 version of NS that I had renamed as NS-201 but then I changed it back and let beta 5 replace it.

  oh well .. I just thought I could join a CS server (since there are no WON NS servers) at least ... I have CS installed here:

  (it is 1.5)
  
  It would be cool if there was a NS 2.01 server still but the ones that remained no one joined to. My clan was going to stay 2.01 as well because most of us hate Steam .. but if you can't beat them .. join them!
  
  Now Steam doesn't seem so bad .. and really there isn't much sense in moving backwards.

  fmod.dll is causing that
  
  if you have the wrong fmod.dll in the half-life folder the game will not work right.
  
  ns 1.0 uses a primitive version of it
  ns 2.0 and 3.0 should be able to use the same fmod.dll that came with ns 3.0
  sven-coop's fmod.dll seems to work with ns 3.0 only and not ns 2.0
