Is there a way to play ns when u have counter-strike condition zero?

if condition zero comes with half life, then yes

basically, if half life is listed under My Games on steam, then you can play ns

I don't know, I'd think CS Retail comes without Half Life, yet allows mods. Maybe CZ is the same?

You dont need anything, even half life, to play ns. All you need is Steam and the Ns installer(Ive done this on many computers, so dont say it doesnt work).

You can't play NS unless half life is listed under the "My Games" section.

I honestly don't think you can install NS without either a Steam account with a working HL SteamID, or a free cd key for HL.

Amazing. I dont have HL on my computer and two of my friends dont either, yet we can still play NS(1 of them doesnt even have anything HL related on his computer, just NS). I guess we're just really cool or something...

Thats impossible. You had to start HL at least once- NS takes a few textures from it to use on the maps, and its not included in NS' file.

Well if you look in your steamapps folder there is a half-life-engine.gcf aswell as half-life.gcf

So I suppose if you had the engine, you could play without actually having the HL data. However I still don't understand how it would work with the missing resources issue.

But also, if you only install ns without halflife (assuming you do have a valid key) it will download some basic halflife files no matter what you do, since they are needed to play ns.

Steam will dl the required files so as long as you have a valid cd key all you need are the steam installer and the ns installer.

If you download the full steam cache install, it'll have all the .gcf files for all the games available from Valve over Steam, even if you don't actually play them.

ok, you can play ns if half life comes with CZ. you can tell if it does because Half Life will be listed under "My Games" in the steam game list like this:

if half life is not there, YOU CANT PLAY NS WITH THAT ACCOUNT. there is no way around it

If you install ns and attempt to play it, steam will automatically install half life for you.

The oddness of this statement is that a full steam install *comes* with HL (and every other Valve mod under the sun). So it's there just unclicked on, along with CS, DoD, TFC, Ricochet, and god knows what else, stealing your precious megabits. <img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused-fix.gif' />

If you mean cz, steam-LESS (coming straight from the retail box), I have very special way of doing it. (This way also works for almost every 3rd Party Steam Game)

Follow these instructions.

1. Get somebody with steam to access (HDÂ©:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\username@emailprovider.com\half-life and copy the 'ns' directory and give it to you.
You can also do this yourself, but in this instance I assume you don't use steam.

2. Copy the ns directory to C:\Valve\Condition Zero

3. Make a shortcut (send to desktop) from the Start Menu->All Programs->Valve->Condition Zero->Condition Zero

4. Right-Click the item on the desktop and add -game ns to the end of it
(eg. C:\Valve\Condition Zero\czero.exe -game ns).

5. Click on it.

6. To play lan with someone else who followed the same instructions...

7. Press ~ (bring up console)

8. Type <i>slist</i>

9. A list of servers will come up. Take note of the number next to the server you want to join.

10. Type <i>connect <number of the corresponding server></i> (eg. connect 1) into console

11. Have fun!

This method may freeze the game occasionally.

If i was the first to discover the method, I take the credit.
If not, well....i'll just..um...hide quietly into the shadows....

plus Opposingforce and Richochet...

He technically did not install these mods... The cache files are there ready to be activated... He can always backup these gcf's and delete them from HD...

Still not that much waste of HD space IMO considering I also downloaded all the caches HL2 Silver package offers which is 3-5 times larger... makes me feel good... look ma I got bunch of games all of sudden... silly me... <img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' />
