What Kinda Framerate You Guys Gettin? Help!

I have a 2.53 533bus P4 with 1GB of ram and a 9800XT, running fresh install of winXP SP1, with all my mobo drivers, the latest Omega Radeon drivers, and Im getting worse framerate than with my Ti-4200. I only reinstalled windows, becuase I slapped my 9800XT in after my 4200, and HL was running worse, so I reformatted just in case there were driver residuals or conflicts left from the 4200.

I dont get it. With the 4200 It was smoother(than the 9800xt at any aa/af setting), even with 2xaa/8xaf. But I dont think its the video card, becuase when I crank the aa/af now the framerate dosent get much worse. I turn aa/af off, and turn down the texture details so it looks like crap and I still get framerate down in to the 20-30's looking at some sceens.

Sceens like the commanders chair and a modest base set up, will drop my framerate into 40-50 instantly. Ive tried differnt drivers for the 9800XT, Ive even tried running in D3D.

What the hell is going on. I always hated how HL was CPU intensive, but that was in 2000. Its 2004, I have a 2.53 and 9800XT for gods sake. I want it to run at 60 all the time.

What are you're experiences with NS. Whats you're rig spec, and what framerate are you getting?

Is there something wrong with my computer? Should I be getting a rock solid(60+) framerate at all times?

Thanks

Is your vertical sync turned off? It greatly improves the framerate because of HL peculiar handling of vertical sync.

Also make sure these two cvars are set to 0: ati_npatch and ati_subdiv

I get chokes where my fps goes down to 1 fps a few seconds if I dont turn antivirus off. If u got an antivirus app running in the background, that might be it.

I get 100 constant here wherever I go with my 9800xt but I'm on a 2GhZ Barton.

My friend has an MX440, and a Barton 2.4ghz. He gets about 40 - 60 fps, with vsync on. I would try using a utility like driver cleaner to wipe all the old video drivers off your pc. There is an indepth guide on how to do so at that website. I know when my friend upgraded from an nVidia to an ATi, the old drivers (somehow) were causing a problem, and after running that program, it was fine.

I myself have a 6800GT, but did have to run driver cleaner to get rid of the stock foreware drivers, to use the betas (seemed to conflict somehow... lol). Right now, I use vsync, because it really doesn't matter to me. I stay a constant 60 FPS @ 1600 x 1200 on my lcd. You should with the card you have be getting the same results. But I would suggest that if you can't find any help here, such forums as Guru3d have many people who can help you out.

Good luck!

VSync shouldn't put a limit lower than the refreshrate of your monitor anyway and I find it hard to believe that you've an updaterate of 40-50. Is it only HL? Have you tried other OpenGL/D3D games?

You should probably be getting +100 FPS. Try turning Vsynch off, and then, type this into your console in game:
developer 1
fps_max 9999
cl_showfps 1

And tell me what your average FPS are.

Try turning TRUFORM off, I remember that I once set it to "application preference" and NS started going at a bad framerate.

In your Video Card Settings:
For both DirectX and OpenGL
AA: Off
AF: Off
TrueForm: Off
Vsync: Off
______________________________________________
NS Setting:
Fps_max 100

Should grant you 100 FPS 90% of the time, it does for me with a 9800 XT 256 MB
Also im running Catalsy 4.10 Drivers which are awsome for me. Gain 10-20 FPS in every game.

If i turn on AA and AF on my ati card i get crap performance too.
Turn it off like said before and everything should be fine!

Only ATI card I've seen that can handle with AA,AF on well is a X800. It got like 80+ FPS constant on CS:S.

The source engine is not the problem, it is a hl1/ati driver issue. I get more fps in ut2k4 with AA and AF then in ns.

Have you downloaded the latest chipset drivers from intel.com?
BTW I have a 3.00 Ghz P4 9800 Pro and I get a rock solid 75 fps (I have an LCD) with 6xAA TAA 16xAF vsync on texture/mipmap quality: max at 1280 x 1024 32 bit color.

100fps @ 1600x1200 and 85fps in com chair.

But thats with an Nvidia card ATI sucks for NS!

You can turn off vsync for testing, but for everything else -- including regular gaming -- keep it on. It does not improve FPS by turning it off. It just releases the video card frame rate from a monitor contraint, the refresh rate. If you're stuck at 60fps even though your refresh rate is above 60hz, use refresh rate override to set it at your monitor's refresh rate at the resolution you play NS.

disable antivirus autoprotect. Framerate goes from 60 to 100 constant

Depend on which Antivirus program you use.

No, it's an OpenGL issue. Ati's cards perform poorly under OpenGL as have seen in HL, Quake3 and other games based on the engine along with the recent Doom3.

How did they manage to make dx9 effects in OpenGL? DX Extensions?
• PhOeNiX3PhOeNiX3 Join Date: 2003-08-07 Member: 19169Members
I was getting <30 in all games with my 9800 pro, then I was told my graphics card and sound card could be conflicting. Try disabling your soundcard/onboard sound and see what happens.

??

OGL and D3D are both just APIs, it's how you utilize them that create the effects.

I got a nice 60fps @ 1600x1200 with my FX5600 256mb. Now... if I could only turn v-sync off :/

Yeah right, my friend had the same card and he got less then 30 fps most of the time. I've got a 9800 pro and I got better fps then him in all games, not once did he come out in the lead. I've got all my settings on high too.

I used to get 75 FPS constant in 1280x1024 with every details possible (detailed textures, etc.).
Since I tried in 1024, everything at "0", I hardly get 50 fps constant. How?

The name of your graficcard?
And how much hz do you have set on your monitor?

Ok guys thanks for the tips, I think NS might actually be working better now.

I think the cvars helped, becuase they reduced the texture quality slightly and gave me back some performance.

Im not getting a rock solid framerate, but its maybe 10 fps higher at all times, which is great.

Im going to do some more research, but its looking good so far.

Well, I've got an AX800XT OC'ed and I got constant 100FPS all the time 1600x1200 6xAA 16xaf... but that's pretty much the best video card on the market right now.

In general, every new version of DX only create more performance drops in older games...

I play at 1280x1024x32 w/ 6xAA & 16xAF @85hz..... only dipps below 90fps in heavy fights. Using ATi aiw 9700pro and x800xt-pe. Using catalyst 4.10 and dx9.0c...... if your using an ATi card try using older catalyst drivers or try out 3d-party drivers like Omega (not recommended). TURN OFF V-SYNC!
