Wierd Triangle

<div class="IPBDescription">I don't get it...</div> I was just looking at files on my computer when I found this picture:

<img src='http://img97.exs.cx/img97/4684/trigrid.gif' border='0' alt='user posted image' />

I don't get it. How is that supposed to be? I tried it myself, and it really is like that. There must be some logical explanation for this, but I'm just too stupid to figure it out <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->. I mean, if the same shapes are used again, it should cover the same area, but somehow it doesn't seem to. Oh well, I hope you can help me, it's bugging the hell out of me.

    take a look at the edges of the sub-triangles and tell me what you see

    Basically, that top line isn't perfectly straight. In the first picture it bows down in the middle and up at the ends. So in the second, it's instead bowing up in the middle and down at the ends. The slight bits of extra squares that are not covered are added up to make one whole 'missing piece' in the second pic. The piece is 'missing' in the first picture too, but simply spread out across little slices of the top line.

    Alright, I guess you're right. I did the math:

    <img src='http://img18.exs.cx/img18/4859/trigrid2.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />

    I didn't know that so few degrees can make such a difference!

    The lower "triangle" is 5 squares tall and 13 wide, so if it were a true right triangle its total area (including the missing piece) would be 5x13x0.5 = 32.5 squares. The missing square therefore accounts for 1/32.5 of the total area, or just under 3.1% -- it's not much!

    I'd add some math but I think I have been math-banned <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Its hard work to reach the Shannanogens level.

    Did you just quote a post from some other thread? <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    yes bob, I think he did

    wizard is sharp at math, he is a dilbert, err engineer

    back on topic!

    those triangles didn't make sense to me, however the slight change in angle is what gives the extra space correct?

    Rise over run kids, no need to wip out the protractors.
    The blue has a slope of 2/5 while the red one has a slope of 3/7
    2/5 != 3/7. The end. The slope is not uniform.

    I would have to say that this optical illusion is one of my favorites.

    It really gets you because you assume that the shapes in the triangles are the same and that just a simple rearrangement would cause the missing square. It is deceptive at the same time that it is an illusion.

    Devious.

    Actually it's 2/5 != 3/8. But it doesn't make a difference.
