and something more on-topic: NS2 is going to run on a new engine... Who on earth made that decision and how can anyone possibly think that is a sound choice? It means NS2 is going to be ugly, late and run like crap, 3rd party engines tend to suck, especially if they are made by relative amateurs... just look at how long it took Id and Valve to finish their games, and they have entire teams of people working for them :/
A lot of these gaming engines are like some programming languages, just a little messed up. That is some one else gives you all the constraints that the language has, which is the engine in this case, and you have to build every thing else around it.
Only problem is these engines are built on what can be created in today's programming world, and processor power.
As languages advance, hardware advances a little more, and the theory and engines for this stuff grows the better the games get. I think all this stuff can be done; it's just a matter of internet connection, hardware, and the version. In a few more years I think that all this can be done on the new engines.
I don't think that third party engines are all that bad, some one has to make them for the groups that don't have the time and money to do it. There are problems in that there trying to make them generic but over all I think its good.
All this talk of a new engine is getting a little worrying...
*IF* NS is going to be ported, it'll have to be to the HL2 SDK - current expectations of for when that's going to be released are looking at a minimum of 6 months. Why? Don't ask me - I don't take much interest in that sort of thing, but other people who do have said that sort of time frame.
So, that leaves other engines - however, you can't port the current code to another engine as it's all written for the HalfLife SDK - so, that essentially means a near complete re-write of the entire code. For those of you who take note of the occassional comment by a dev, you'll know that theres a good couple of million lines of code in there - that'll take a LONG time to re-write when you allow time for the dev's to adapt to a new engine...
The moral of the rant? Stop speculating - all it does is get people more frustrated with the limits of the current system.
In order to keep its player base, NS needs to get ready to move to Source. Now, if NS is just about done for its free version, then they'd need to get right into NS2, or start building an engine to power NS2 (they most likely won't). In that case, NS: S would not be needed, since they'd be using Source or a comparible engine to power it.
If NS was ported to Source and continued as a modification, except moved over to a far better engine, then the possibilities go quite far. Just look what the Hostile Intent team accomplished on an engine that is over 8 years old and based on an engine even older.
NS: S would most likely be a port with some added elements.
Now, as to the original poster's question, NS: S would be different; quite different in fact.
I've been playing CS:S quite a bit recently, and it feels different than regular CS. I have heard similar comments from players in game as well. CS: S, despite being, essentially, a straight port that is intended to keep the same gameplay as CS, feels and plays different.
This brings to mind a time when GW 1.45 was completely unofficial, with our guy Carlos making a small replacement pack for some gun models and sounds. The AK-74 got a model and sound replacement, and all of the sudden it seemed more accurate, more powerful, etc. It wasn't; not a single element involving the actual game settings had been changed.
Now, think of an NS where hitboxes are no longer a problem, graphics and animations run smoothly. Imagine the graphics look 100x better than what they are now.
You have a game that feels different and plays different. Some things are still going to be a problem, but overall, NS: S would take the idea to a completely different level.
They way i see it if NS just wanted to evolve Source would be the obvious choice.
If NS wanted to become a stand online product Doom3 engine would be the best choice.. I mean just look at it you want infestations just look at the hell ones in the first few levels of doom3 <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> i mean the games are kinda similar in a way.

Just imagine if everything you guys said could happen in NS:S or NS2. I would pray to my computer before I sleep each night. I'd even take screenshots. Considering ns is balanced for 10v10 games (last I knew anyways) we might have problems if NS ever goes to HL2 with its 200+ player capable servers.
As for weapons. If the engine and physics allow for it, I think its still Flayra's intent to pursue a working (and balanced too) flamethrower type weapon for marines

I can't imagine servers considering over 32 players, unless it's a really chaotic CS server or something.
Also, I don't think the hive spitting out skulks has to be graphic like a woman having a baby or something. The skulk could just simply appear at the base of the hive, and fly to the ground as if it were spit out.
One of the better things about HL2's engine that I've heard is that any item can be rendered using any number of the graphical effects. You know what this means?
The water in HL2 ripples and defracts light. <i>You can build Skulks or Onos out of the water.</i> DO. YOU. KNOW. WHAT. THAT. MEANS?
