Hiya Folks!

im new, where can I go to train for comm
hi, im farely new to this mod, I dled it due to a love of starcraft and fps games. Anyway, I noticed the comm option, so naturally I jumped right in the first time I joined a server, figuring it would be like starcraft.... well after about 5-6 minutes of trying to use comm, my team was dead, the ip's were gone, and I was stuck in my comm chair. AFter that, I was exposed to verbal slurs, then banned by a admin.
Not a very fun experience.

Anyway, I was wondering where to go to train for comm? yes I saw the thread about it, but all those server are outdated, except one, which is the one I went to and got banned from.. I read about the bots and ive dled rcbot, and started to use it. Its pretty good except for one problem, either the marines wont go where I tell them to, they kind of just stand around no matter what. OR either the marines will do what I say, but the aliens wont do a dang thing... which makes victory way to easy.

So anyway, I would like some servers for comm training please. Ive gotten down how to gorge just fine, as it is much easier than comm. Help would be greatly appreciated.

alway, Frag on!

Not to rub salt in your wounds or anything, but no one should ever com the first time they play. The marines under your command are REAL PEOPLE, not NPCs. It's extremely frustrating to have a com who has no idea what he's doing. Spend a while as a marine, so you can learn what they can and cannot do. As for actual com practice, bots won't cut it. Try to memorize the hotkeys, then hop in the chair and do your best. Remember to plan ahead and don't have unrealistic expectations of your marines. If you're really nervous, use an alias. Finally, listen to your marines. Not the ones spamming the mic for an HMG, but the ones who offer advice. Drop structures where they ask, and do your best to keep them alive.

I know of a few newbie-friendly servers. PM me for the ips.

Talk about inappropiate. If you are telling me the whole truthful story then that was quite inappropiate indeed, all he needed to do was to kick you.

What was the server? Who was the admin? I want to have a little chat with that admin please.

But do listen to the advice H. Gorge just gave you. I recommend also going to #nslearn and talking with the NSGuides. Also be aware that some people are helpful and nice and some are just arseholes. \

    Good luck!

PS: Be sure to read the FAQ in the forums before posting if you have not already.

Anyway, thnx for the tips. Yeah I dont think ill be using bots anymore, they are too dumb. Please post some ips up if ya got em.

oh yeah, sorry for trying out comm first off, I shouldnt have, but I played a reg o'l rine a few days in row and got the feel for the game.

best advice i can give you? is play as a marine. learn what strats win. learn what goes where. i am very tactical. and would make a good comm. but i dont care enough? that make sense?

i play as like the guy who is on the mic with the comm from the field always telling him what needs to be done etc... im a backseat comm.

but seriously you will learn from being a marine what needs to be done soon

Heh, just OT for a second. H. Gorge, your sig is too long. 400x75 px is the max. Change before Talesin or Nem0 bants you.
(Bob edit: We don't ban for that, we just remove it. Now if the same person keeps putting the same sig back over and over despite warnings, we might have to take it to the next level. But banning over a sig image is pretty unlikely. Just keeping the propaganda straight. )

Darnit. Well I can't smack him up if I don't know who "he" is.

It's a good idea to always take a screenshot if someone bans you so you don't forget.

im not too worried about it at the moment, I just got done playing there a few minutes ago. It must have just been a temp kick and ban.

btw, how do I get smilies into my sig>

Don't comm until you know the game, save everyone some headaches, including yourself. Once you've learned the game, then you should try comming.

get rcbot, (which u did) and then get whichbot for good aliens
  • JawbreakerJawbreaker Join Date: 2004-10-22 Member: 32407Members
but the thing with rcbot is the marines just kind of sit around and do nothing... I dont know if this is due to bad waypoints or what...

H Gorge and TheAdj` are right on. Newbies to NS should never command.

    Here's the procedure:
    1. Read FAQs
    2. Start out on marines, follow your orders and listen and watch what others do
    3. Start talking on #nslearn
    4. Start reading Frontiersmen and Kharaa Strategy forum threads
    5. Now play alien
    6. Learn to how to be a skulk and gorge, don't res hoard, spend it
7.After a while you'll be ready to learn when you should save up for fade and then you learn how to be a good fade.
    8. Then brush up on your RTS skills
    9. Then command.

Most importantly: play, listen, teamwork, read, and think

This is one of the best servers out there in my expiriences. The admins and players are mixed from vetrans to newbies. Players are for the most part very helpful but also very competitive. You WILL face a challenge here if you are new andt here is sort of a steep learning curve here but the players help you along as best as you can.

Gameplay is thus fast and exciting. The admins try to help out with any questions as best as they can and they for the most part do not tolerate insulting players and other types of harrassment. I personally saw one admin kick or ban 3 players who were using bad language repeatedly or making fun of other players.
If you dont have anything good to say dont say it in this sever espescialy when an admin or regular is around. Other then that, if you want to see what NS is really about come play here.

The [oldF] clan has been around the NS community for a long time. This clan is made up of mostly older gamers. They strive for a fun and fairness and love to help out new gamers. [oldF] runs several different NS servers around the world. All of them have the same positive attitudes when it comes to helping out new players and treating people with respect. This is not specifically a new player server but any [oldF] clan member or admin will gladly help you out if you need help with the game. gameplay here is relaxed and fun. Come here for a good time. Like the Spyder Server bad attitudes are best left somewhere else when you connect into the server.

This seems to be the most popular of the "New Player Training/Practice" genre of servers. It almost always has a fair amount of newer players in it. The server rule is that as the servers' name implies you join the marine side. However if the marine side is full you can join the alien side. The alien side is comprised of a set number of fairly skilled bots. They arn't brilliant but they are definatly not on the easiest setting either. When/if a human player joins the alien side, one bot will be removed to keep teams fair. This is afun server to be in if you are a new player b/c most of the people in there are new themeselves. It would also apear that many of these newer players have stayed around to become regulars.

If you want to learn to become a future commander (The world can never have enough of them) this is the place to go command for the first time or to try out that new stratedgy you have always wanted to try out but may have been to nervous to do it in a normal public server.

This server may not be the greatest of all NS servers but it is by far not the worst. I have played many a friendly and fun game here. The player community is varied with server regulars and new players. This server has been around NS for a long time so expect to see people who know what to do. Several people were willing to help me with any questions I had. There was one guy who called me a nub and to go read the manual etc, but everyone else pretty much ignored him and was very helpful.

This is a new player practice server as the name implies. When it is filled gameplay may be a bit slow and unorganized but this is due to new players expirimenting around and trying new things out. When an admin is around they will help you as best as they can. The only bad part of this server is that while it has high potential its hard to find it with enough players in it to have a real game.

This server is the European counterpart to the [NA]'s Training Server.
I beleive it is based somewhere in Germany. that also explained the higher ping I had. If you are a European NS player you might want to try this one out. There were a lot of French, British, and German players in this server and we had a good time. If no one knew the answer to something the players got together and tried it out. Gameplay starts off slow but quickly progresses as people learn what they think works best and then implement it.

Go to any of these servers they are noob friendly.

download the BETA, install that and copy/move waypoints from rcbot/waypoints/nsp to rcbot/waypoints/ns because remember that ns beta 5 changed directory name from nsp to ns, and all ns 2 waypoints are still in the "ns" folder meaning the waypoints are out of date and prbably all in the worng place if you use them in beta 5

Tell you team your new and ask them if they can teach you to command. Theres been many times when on the server i frequent we've agreed and used our mics to tell him what needs to be done and how and quite often won.

Try playing in the day time you'll probably have less people whining at you and more trying to help you, aslong as you let them know and they agree.
