What do I do? Solution: aim at feet
Whenever I am the GL guy I am often targeted first by aliens. A skulk or lerk comes right at me, assuming I will be an easy kill up close. Sometimes shooting a nade right at the ground saves my life. It works much more often than trying to pistol something or aim a nade right at it. If I am half dead already, I may kill myself, but it's better than giving res/exp to my enemy, since I was going to die anyway.
Who else does this?

When the team's been defeated (or I had a pitstop and was left behind by the group), I make a decision to either:
A) Leave the launcher full for the next guy. Only viable if there are others nearby, but just not close enough to protect me. In which case the pistol makes its appearance.
B) Bounce the nades off of walls and back at me. That skulk may get his kill, he may not. But the nades will probably get him regardless.
As for how I make that decision, it is easy to make as long as I am aware of the sounds around me and frequently check the minimap (during the game, especially once we have MT, I like to be just as well-informed as the comm)
I never kill myself immediately because when I do that it means that I've lost the launcher with the skulk so far away that he isn't killed = spendinf of res with no payoff = comm no longer gives me anything for the whole game because he's easily ticked off.
Dead rine, happy skulk.
More reasonable strategy is to drop a nade, pistolwhip/knife before it goes off. Don't be silly and empty your GL of all 4 grenades.
if u were with ur team and they died, take shotgun/hmg off the floor instead.
if u/the commander is the quite stupid type, then i would rather pistol whip + slash for one skulk. for multiple skulks i start dropping grenades.
for co i just spam grenades if my armor is already down as resupply gets u back the ammo, and u won't kill urself usually unless u got weap3 or like following the grenades u shoot. resupply gets u back to health.
i only shoot at the ground if the team is being swamped as a sort of last ditch effort to survive
I love the GL, I profess it to be my best weapon. Practice makes perfect, and I've GLed in every game since Doom. That said, here's my tips:
Practice. Load up old Bast, turn on the cheats and get a GL and welder. Weld shut the vent at MS. You'll note it doesn't close entirely. Now, get the GL, practice putting a nade through that vent from a variety of distances. Get used to using the little aiming reticle, as it's very handy. Invent challenges for yourself, and especially try to master the art of aiming for sounds.A decent set of stereo headphones can make you very efficient in bagging lurking skulks.
Stick with your buddies. The GL will NOT kill an Onos. At most you will get 2 shots at it, then it will probably devour you. If you see an onos and you're alone, DROP the launcher. At least someone might pick it up after you.
In any other situation, fire a few nades and then pull out a pistol, or knife. Never forget about your backup weapons.
If you're facing aliens in corridors, alone, then you can GL your feet... but I prefer firing a nade at about 45-90 degrees to your right or left. The nearer to 45 degrees the more the nade will bounce down the corridor. It will fly off walls and be a hell of a lot harder to avoid. If you're lucky enough to have a full clip then as well as left-right angling don't forget up-down angling. Four nades at a variety of angles can bounce all round a tight corridor and a bhopping skulk stands a good chance of killing itself. In larger rooms you've very little chance of setting up a flying nade wall, so if you're losing you really want to get into a corridor to maximise your potential.
In either case you really should NOT be aiming straight at an enemy, EVER. Sidestepping will save them from all your nades. Make the trajectory unpredictable, always aim to the left or right, up or down, and use the walls and ceiling to send the grenade bouncing into the enemy. This is why you NEED to practice with your GL.
If you are for a FACT going to die, then turn to your immediate right or left and fire the full clip. The nades will bounce in midair back and forth, and if you sidestep a little AWAY from the incoming attacker then they might run into those midair nades. In any case switch to the knife/pistol and hope its wounded. Ultimately those nades will detonate whether they hit the skulk/fade or not, and if you're slightly in front then when they attack you they're going to be right in the middle of the blast.
Thats about all my wisdom to dispense. Remember the GL is largely a support weapon, so stick in the middle of your buddies and learn the deadly art of ricochet.
Good luck!
NOTE: On servers that don't have friendly fire, you can make further use of a GL by doing the left-right suicide spam whenever your team is attacked. Think of it as a big spore cloud. If skulks are rushing your HA, and you can't get a bead on the little darlings, simply fire some rounds so they'll land on the ground around you. BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM and your HA should be in good shape after. NOT advisable on FF servers.
Don't aim at the ground. The grenade will bounce up. Aim at the ceiling and make it bounce to the ground. Try it before you doubt it.
Next time skulks come at you, aim at the ceiling so the angle will make the grenade bounce down right on you / at an angle to get them. It works better.
Doom had a gl
*cough*quake*cough*
This should do two things... keep the skulks back if they are counting because they never get to 4
AND
If they do come rushing in, I have 2 spares to launch (granted I'm able to interrupt the reload sequence either by furiously pounding my left mouse button, or switch between pistol and back). The same goes with the SG, except I don't most players count the number of shots. Again, its just to have spares in case a skulk comes running around the corner or respawns (in CO)
The draw back to this is that it is a slower for firing off and reloading the same number of rounds. But, esp. in CO, it has kept me alive longer
I blame Doomaniac for sending me the nude pictures which mean everytime I think of an early FPS I think of his naked fist punching an angry red cyclopean circle.
If I know I am going to die I empty my 'nade launcher at my feet and unload my pistol.
That's right skullcage...
Apparently in the future they fight wars like the gangs from Michael Jackson videos, where the gangsters all stand around with their TEC-9s and sawed-off shotguns while their leaders tie their wrists together and have a switchblade fight in the middle of a pool hall, at least until Michael Jackson shows up and starts grabbing his **** to demonstrate the futility of violence.
Happy rine, dead skulk.

Yeah I agree with that.
or if your good. shoot the skulk in mid air. ive killed a couple of charging lerks before with a gl. sometimes a blinking fade too if you know how to lead shots rights
Note: Try not to be alone with a GL in the first place!
= my preference
Aiming at your feet is an exploit (not saying that's a bad thing, but it is one by definition) of the FF being off.
If there is a skulk comming at you when you are a GL guy you need to have a pistol and a buddy (and someone with another primary wepons other than the grenade launcher) to give you cover fire.
NS grenade launchers are not contact, they are good a making firestorms to blow up lots of aliens and structures but you can't solo with them unless you have a lot of luck or the enemy is stupid.
Yes I have hit skulks with grenades before, I hit a lerk once in mid air (after which he called me a "haxor"), but it's not easy and there's no guarantee. Really the only player which you can hit well is the onos simply because it's to big to evade.
So remember, the solution is to always have a buddy and a pistol.
Way to miss the whole bit about bunnyhopping.
