How To Be A Good Commander ?

xakkxakk Join Date: 2004-10-11 Member: 32212Members
Alright, i started to play NS 2 days ago, and i really wanna practice beeing a commander, and a good one at it. But how can i get used to play one? I once tried it but got ejected right after i entered the cc >_<. Any way to practice or simulate the Commander interface and/or gameplay without having to change servers frequently and keep hopping into the com stations? ^^?
Thanks

I suggest you to visit nshelp site they have great guides about anything. Secondly before going to the chair in online try with bots, you can find ns-bots nowdays quite easily and get to know the chair by them.

    After going bot-maniac try these:

    1. Find some friendly named server (avoid servers with clan on their name)
    2. Say you are naab and tell them you want to try comming(helps alot)
    3. Listen what your rines have to say and in the beginning do what they want, even give them those shotguns they are crying for.
    4. Dont make tf in base (100% ejection)

Heres also small build strat which will take you far:

1 infantry portal in start and armory.
after those are done make arms lab and put a1 in research asap.(=as soon as possible)
After that try capping some resource towers and around 4min make 2ip. Advanced armor should be put on research before 2. ip, but it isnt so terrible if it comes afterwards. After that the game stars to live and you cant have any constant plan. <!--emo&::tsa::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tsa.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tsa.gif' /><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::tsa::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tsa.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tsa.gif' /><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::tsa::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tsa.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tsa.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Ps. Make arms upgrds in this order at beginning: armor1 weapon123 armor23
(if you want more of arms upgrds check my arms lab hint thread)

Thanks guys, those sites helped a lot. The only problem i still have is the micromanagement of all the rines like, sending all rines to different waypoints and keeping an eye on which rine is where and when to place a res tower etc >_<
Also, how can i check the location of the rines that request medpacks/ammo/or something?

When a rine requests a med/ammo/order you will see a med/ammo/order sprite on the lower left corner of you screen. Just click it and you will be transfered to the rines location.

    some other things:

    -<b>use voice comm</b>
-ask your rines what they want/need
-know who can take care for himself and who needs backup
-make yourself familiar with the map and map specific reloc points
-provide them with cookies when your rines do smth well
-rines that listen should be provided with cookies (even if they screw up)
-dont be fixed onto a single aim, if they cant reach processing then they just cant.
-Dont send them to certain death over and over again
-dont be afraid to jump out of the cc and defend the base yourself
    -always have the obs hotkeyed
-dont stick to the same start over and over again
-every third round should be quick and funny (eg. sg-rush, ip-rush, reloc to main hive)
-when a rines requests ammo dont drop him 5 packs, 1 should be enough.
-good rines ask for ammo/health when they need it, bad ones will request it permanently
-If you have lost (aliens have 3 hives and nearly total mapcontrol) dont be afraid to sell the IPs and hand out mines and heavy equippment, instead of turteling.
(But ask your rines before doing so)
-when handing out mines tell your rines what to do with them, BEFORE you hand them out
-dont cc block the onos, instagibbing aliens with a door/elevator is evil but funny
    - If your rines dont follow your orders you are screwed, thats why you need to enshure that they follow them.
-compare rounds with talkative comms to ones with non talkative comms and feel the difference

    - If you get good pings to european servers just drop me a pm and i will give you some server ips which are teamwork intensive.

Oh and yes those thing ^up^ there are great. Just a few more:

-put your sounds little bit higher so you can hear everything that you cant see
-put arms, obs and other buildings to hotkeys leave 1 or 2 to squads

One idea is to start commanding on siege maps. Yeah, I know they suck, but they are a lot easier to comm than normal games. You already know how the game will work before any action even starts. Marines push. Fades get through and start killing res nodes. Aliens eventually kill the push. Depending on how long that took, marines can either siege, or hold out until the siege doors open. Watch for a couple rounds until you've got the build order and then it's easy. It's really good practice managing upgrades/dropping equipment/dropping medpacks+ammo/learning basic commanding tactics. Of course, siege maps get boring pretty fast, and push you into doing one strategy. Once you have the basics down, switch to regular maps.

And always, before you comm, know stuff like: why armor 1 is usually better than weapons 1 for the first upgrade; understanding that you need to upgrade the armory a few minutes before you are ready to assault; knowing when to drop weapons for early fades, etc. Just watch what good comms do. You should already be a very good marine before you even jump in the chair.

oh, and hey.. prepare to take some hardcore (and often unjustified) ridicule.

if the server is cool, and you've made it clear you're new, they should be willing to help you out and provide advice. if they're lame, they may freak out and start insulting you.

this is normal. it's best not to respond to these people. just be prepared to take some insults.

    5-step guide to comming:

<b>Step 1:</b> Watch other people comm. (more then once, 1 certain map)
<b>Step 2:</b> Try comming that map yourself, using their strategy. If you really need help ask if anyone wants to take over from you because you haven't done this alot.
<b>Step 3:</b> Make your own strategy for that map, and put it to work...yet again let other people jump in if needed.
    <b>Step 4:</b> Comm the map again...this time take your defeat if needed...listen to your marines if you have NO chance anyway...they won't blaim u 4 losing then <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->.
<b>Step 5:</b> Comm other maps, explore comming, do as you please...most of all: have fun doing it <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->.

Clicking on the minimap is far more reliable than using spacebar to go to the last alert. Just click around until you find what's under attack (usually RTs), and if it was an order/med/ammo call, either click the icon and use the hotkeys to perform an action at the same time, or use the impluses available for binding that will go to the call for you.

There's no hard and fast rule to be a good commander, but a good general one is to just listen to your team and keep them happy - then you've got a bigger chance of them following orders. Also, you're likely to have people playing who are good comms and are, hopefully, nice enough to help you out.

If all else fails, drop me a line and i'll see what I can do about locking my server for you , some mates etc to have a little practice.

As a com think of yourself as a manager for a company.

Your job is to lead your team to victory.

Now the key factor to success is communication make sure you are listening to your marines and your marines know what you want.

People can't read your mind and people have short memory spans so always keep your marines up to date on whats going on this keeps them in line to. Don't keep them in the dark otherwise they will loose faith in you even if you are going for a crazy tactic you will find your team will support you if you keep them in the loop.

Try to stay calm and don't shout at your guys(i'm really bad at this). Keep trying to motivate your guys if they do something good let them know encourage them.

The mechanics of the game is simple really just give your team meds and ammo as needed and rush upgrades asap don't bother with turrets.

    Being a good commander.
First you must pratice with bots <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=75671' target='_blank'>Click here for links</a>
    - Now pratice with them (bots will be dumb ) This will help you learn some controls of commanding.
    - Using a mic or typeing really fast helps often.
    - Study other commanders in marines' eyes.
    - When your ready go to any small game (Less angry players if you lose but it will be a bit harder than big games).
    - Use any other commands' strats.
    - Click the marine looking icon thing in the top middle of your screen and hold ctrl 5 for better chance to win
    - Get used to hot/short keys(Wait are those what they're called ? I forgot.). Like instead of clicking a shotgun then dropping it press s (I think thats the shotgun drop key) then you can spam it (If your going to spam it or so) . It's best to get used to these hot keys .
    - Think really fast like in regular RTS games.
    - Never let the marines boss you too much (commander can I have a shotgun, someone spamming that, Commander build a PG here!!! just think) Meaning some marines may request stupid things and some others can help you win. Keep track of your good players and bad players.
    - After you think you got it to commander in a big game go for it. 12v12-15v15 you have a 60-70% chance to win (Hate to say it but aliens are underpowered in big games)

I was going to tell you my strat in most large games but it's hard to explain. Study other commanders' strats threw marine's eyes.

-Be able to oversee the situation, try to react to something asap in the right way.
-Be able to really Command you're marines, don't be a.
-Keep you're marines healty, and give em something to shoot! (yes ammo).
-Keep pressing the Kharaa, don't just site there!
-Know the controls, know what every buildings can do, what every weapon can do.
-Be able to give the right people the right equipment, don't supply the always-dieing-rambo with a good gun.
-Don't just hop out and/or leave the game and screw it for the rest of the people, if you have to go for whatever reason, give the marines a warning that you need to be replaced.
-Don't shout at your marines, be reasonable, shouting noobs won't make them better, stay polite and HELP them.
