I'm not very impressed, especially by the textures. But we'll just have to wait and see...

It does look very pretty, but you can see from Hammer that Source will not make amazing graphics and worlds easier - it will just give people more capabilities and ease of use. You will have to put a hell of a lot of effort in to get it looking that good; you could still make present day HL looking maps in Source, and have it look the same. [As far as I'm aware]. Are they the only two screenshots there are? The only thing I noticed in the in-game was the light. And the hammer just showed me the complete amount of detail put into it, to make it look that good.

After spending some time in CS Source, I have to say that the screenshots never capture the experience. None of the CS screenshots impressed me but the actual in-game experience is incredible. I'll assume DoD will have the same issues.
I'm looking forward to tossing a few potato mashers and watching the flying carnage

Color me duly unimpressed. I don't really see anything in that shot that couldn't be done with the hl1 engine. The arches aren't true curves, they're just plain old flat surfaces. (quake 3 had curved surfaces... how many years ago?) The light beam is a nifty trick, but not anything that can't be managed in hl1 without much trouble. And maybe the textures are more detailed than they appear in the shots, but those look like pretty standard blah rock textures. Maybe it's more amazing in game, but from the shots at least... meh.

I hope Valve implement curved surfaces, fast.

Note the heavy JPG compression in that image, which probally has somthing to do with it. Also: they are still using crosshairs for insta-kill weapons, which is disturbing. You'd think that with the Source engine they could create a realisitic iron-sights system and actually balance things using it.

Ah well.

Man, I even forgot my DoD map names. I used to love DoD, then they had to probe up Sniping's butt.

It's obvious that DoD: Source is still at early stages (same HUD, weapon models...).

Edit: Waldo himself said that the point of DoD: Source was the same as CS: Source, making it look prettier. So don't take it as if it was final...

The entire view model is the same - not updated yet.

In-game shot looks ok - a ways to go, but definitely a step in the right direction. The editor shot just re-affirms my view I don't really want anything to do with Source's Hammer and that there's really nothing new to use.

Now now, just because they've included a familiar interface to make it easy to get back into doesn't mean that it's just the same old editor without any nice new features. I hope. (Ye gods, do I hope)

But it ain't about the editor, it's about what you can do with HL2 and all it's juicy features.

Also, it's pointless to even analyse this screen. It's so work-in-progress it hurts.

They probably are just porting the code and a few maps over, and then expecting the community to make amazing new player models, gun models, maps, etc.

Which the community will obviously do.

So stop worrying, stop freaking out, and just wait patiently. HL2 is on its way, and you'll be most likely playing that nonstop for a week anyways.

I don't really worry, and in a way, I'm glad, because a HL1 mod would've faced stern issues had they taken CS and DoD and truly updated them to meet the Source engine's potential, but it seems like a colossaly lost opportunity to me. I don't want to imply that the games should've been redesigned from scratch, but looking at the things possible in HL2, and seeing that these options were apparently not even considered, I have to say that I feel let down, and I hold no special interest in either game.

Yeah you could in the HL1 engine, although it would struggle with the amount of polygons and play would be choppy.

These remakes are intended to show the ablities of porting, and as KFS said, DOD:S is in early development.

Keep in mind these are *for the most part* direct ports with slight graphical enhancements. The real fun starts when they release updates to actually utilize some of Source's best features.

I feel that Nem, but it's also a lot more effort required from the boys over at VALVe to pull together a completely redone port of DoD:S. Just think about CS: S, and the amount of time/energy/testing it has required to get to a releasable state that only has one player model per team and watered down physics. Valve is still a smaller scale production company, even if they make the best games in the world. I would have loved to see a completely redone Half Life on Source, instead of a port with better lighting and water.

However, you can bet that there will be people releasing updated models, textures, weapons, maps, etc, that will use the Source engine to a much higher level than what Valve is doing. My feeling is that Valve's playing this smart; by porting their products to Source, they're giving the community that plays these games the ability to use its collective abilities for a much better gaming experience.

How long after DoD: Source comes out before some modeling/skinning freak releases a full scale weapons pack? How about a full scale player pack? How about amazing new maps? How about when Valve decides to include all of these "packs" in an update to DoD:S?

I think Valve's giving people the basics and expecting them to run with it.

If you're actually offended by a giant flashing smiley, then you shouldn't discover what's out there.

When I see that gif I just see an stupidly oversized flashing smiley, which is obviously, and intentionaly, stupid.

PS: It's called a joke.

Do you have to quote that abomination twice? On topic, i find the ingame shot rather disapointing (map wise). Even if it is a work in progress i would have expected more, they aren't thinking big (a big ol cathedral would be nice). I think this is just indicative of the fact this will be a relatively straight port, and nothing to get particularly excited about.
