wow.
ok i know there has been other threads on this but they are all old and i dont want '0h 3m g333 thread necro roflwaffles'

just rented this one from work, and aside from the length, i am incredibly impressed. i had no interest in seeing orlando and brad pitt in yet another 'lets flex our stuff' flick, but this was no such thing, very well told. all around superb.

if you havent seen it. go rent it now.

one Q though, they put coins on the eyes of the dead? for 'the boatmen' ? anyone care to explain i am not a follower of greek mythology. i assume to pay the boatmen for safe passage between earth/heavem, but what water mass is supposed to be in between?

Charon is the name of the ferryman who takes you over the river Styx to the lands of the dead. The coins are his pay.

In greek mythos there were no heaven/hell in traditionally sense. Only the underworld (divided in eulysia/something bad I think) which everyone who died came to. The boat man would carry the recently deceased souls from a limbo-kinda state to the underworld for a penny. Atleast I think it's like that.

Troy was ok, despite it's hollywoodness.

I watched that in the cinema... my arse was dead as a door knob - aside from that it was good

There weren't even coins like what are depicted in the movie until centuries later.

Given the amount of liberties they took with it, I'd say they did an ok job. Coin scenes are probably the worst of the inaccuracies, though, because there's no reason in the conversion from 10 years war to 2 hours war to put it in, unlike some other corners cut and plot lines mingled.

Worth the price I paid at admission, even if it was student discount at the time.

Troy was a rather good movie.
The length of the war wasn't the only thing they "changed", although I was rather pleased with the way they handled the gods in the movie. They didn't take out the religion completely like I feared after I heard some of reviews but rather took it down to a realisitic level

    SPOILER

If I recall correctly Achiles was shot by the god Apollon himself because of dishonoring him rather than some human punk.

    /SPOILER

But how they shortened the war to two hours was rather strange, considering they could have easily made it stretch for the approriate timeframe.
And if you want more information on the greek underworld, read Dante's Inferno or listen to song by Iced Earth.

    +++++++SPOILER+++++++++++

Actually, achilles was shot by Paris, as in the movie. It was said to be guided by Apollo. =]

    ---------SPOILER-------------

I think that most of the "plot edits" in the movie were not made out of Hollywood ignorance, but just by converting it to be appreciated by a wider audience, without totally desecrating it.. Remember it's there to enjoy. And I enjoyed it.. Personally I didn't really mind any of the "flaws". Ten years into three days or weeks is pretty hectic, and I don't exactly understand it, but it didn't ruin it.

Not to mention that he shot him with the bow of Hercules.

what people don't understand is that the humanized the whole plot of the play.. they are not "flaws" they are the interpretations or ideas of the people who made the movie. for instance, achilles is fully human, but he just has teh mastar skillz.

and.. god damn he's f*ing sexy..

I thought they did well dealing with Achilles' immortality and death. His mother's character and drive (that her son be a hero) was good, but it was a little strange to hear Achilles spewing it for the rest of the movie. I suppose it fit.

I thought Eric Bana did fantastically; by far the best of the three.

well if you can't appreciate Orlando Bloom, Brad Pitt, Eric Bana, Sean Bean, and more, all in the same well-directed, very well executed movie which is, on the whole, a VERY good adaptation of the story.. then i don't think you really like movies much at all.

    Hey, distortion is a distortion.
At least they didn't make Archilles a black guy or change Paris into a girl...
Uh wait, they should change Paris into a girl, that will make the movie much more interesting.

Actually I really liked the way they dealt with Achilles. His speeches about imortality through history were actually quite inspiring and true. But then I'm a sucker for this heroism stuff.
Think about it, the only way for soldier to ever achieve any sort of recognition is through becoming a true legend (well at least in that time, I don't think its quite as easy today). Oh well, its just a story, I'll shut up now.

Stars don't make a film, no matter what the quality or quantity. When the script is weak, such as in Troy, their acting seems weak. When the acting is weak, the film is weak; which, among other factors, is why Troy is a poor film when you're looking for something of substance.

I can't appreciate it, yet I love movies. Crazy paradox!

You can go ahead any say that, Tequila you schmuck, but the reality of it is that myself, and a lot of other people, disagree. So really it's down to personal preference, because different people can look at the same source and either like it or dislike it. So it's no use stating these "facts" when they're not, really.

[For the record, I loved it. Eric Bana is awesome.]
