And surely these video game schmucks can figure out how to not let their game be leaked.. [note, leaked not stolen].. Has any microsoft software been leaked this extensively?
Damn, no sarcasm tags.

Oh boy, what a surprize.
Expect every good game series, or every super-hyped game to get leaked from now on.
....
Where did this quote come from? I thought my grammar is bad
Or more commonly: Try to make game -> some dippy employee downloads spyware/password sniffer onto computer -> intruder gets into network -> works way along intranet until finds what they want.
A totally isolated code server has its own problems, but I suppose you could put up with it if it mattered.
For HL2, the leak mattered because it could be used to make hacks. The game is going to be pirated regardless of "copy protection" or leaking anyway, so that's not the issue. Pirates are both smart and determined (but often careless, which is generally how they get caught). Who cares if people make hacks for San Andreas? Or end up with a crappy pre-release version?

One little typo and the hyenas are all over you. Fixed.

I expect most games to be leaked though, and I won't touch it until I can do it legally
For everyone crying about having to go online to register HL2, even if you buy retail, it's for security reasons.
I've said this in other threads and i'll say it in this one, the games companies are rarely where the leaks come from. There's a pretty long line of people involved with the release of a game, each one is liable to have it either a) stolen or b) leaked by an employee. Review copies could be leaked by a part-time go-fer, retail versions can be leaked from the store room of a store, display versions can be leaked by people either at the event or working behind the scenes at the event. There are even more ways for a game to be leaked before it's release date.
Once the game is out in stores it's pretty much certain to find itself on the internet within mere days of it's release. Don't say it's only hyped games, that's not true, why did the likes of Breed, Mortyr, Microsoft Train Simulator and even Daikatana find their way onto newsgroups, FTPs and IRC channels?
Oh, and GTA:SA is leaked? Hell, GTA1 was leaked. Open your eyes people, just because the Beeb doesn't report each and every leak or illegal release, doesn't mean that they're not happening.
I buy good games, really I do, because they are worth it.

It's impossible to keep a game secure. Hundreds of people are involved in the production, shipping, and sale of these games, some of them are bound to be corrupt and in a position to leak it.
Because hype sells games.
