The Ship (hl Mod)
<div class="IPBDescription">Stalk your quarry...</div> I dont know how many of you have heard of this mod, but its an absolute ton of fun. Here uh, let me just give you the address real quick of the website before I start describing it in my own words.
<a href='http://www.theshiponline.com/' target='_blank'>www.theshiponline.com</a>
Alright, now that thats done and out of the way, heres my take on the game. It has some "The Sims" aspects, as well as some good old fragging action from what you expect of the run of the mill Half-Life mod. Except the style in which you frag isnt exactally the same as the run and gun we're used to. Before I get into that, though, I'll describe the "sims" part more, since its one of the things that grabbed my attention first about the game.
In the game, you have several different needs. Poop, pee, hygine, entertainment, sleep, eating, drinking and socializing. Each is furfilled by its own task, sometimes more than one are furfilled by doing only one action on a single object, like pooping and peeing in a toilet or eating an entire meal that covers both the eating and drinking portion, however you can also furfill drinking by getting a drink at a vending machine. See what I mean? Now, just like in "The Sims," each need has a bar. The higher the bar, the more of the urgency of that need. If the bar reaches full, you will die (dont ask me how you **** yourself, or die from a lack of entertainment). Its all very cleverly put into this game, as you will see as I describe the fragging portion now.
Thoughout the level, there are guns and weapons scattered about. Revolvers hidden under cabnets or in dark corners, sirenges you can steal from the doctors quarters, or maybe the rocket launcher hidden in a secret capartment behind the stall on the left of the fifth toilet down the hall. The whole list of weapons (off the top of my head) are the service revolver, sirenge, rocket launcher, unbrella, crowbar (cant live without 'em), crossbow, sub machinegun, punching people (which takes about 1000 punches to kill someone, litterly, you usually just use it to move NPCs out of your way), a blunderbuss (shotgun), grenades, proximity mines, and sachel charges. I'm pretty sure thats it, there might be more, but as you can see there are plenty to choose from.
Now, the style of the fragging is different from any other HL mod. See, in the game, you have a "quarry," (which isnt the same the entire game, you can read more about it on the main site) someone you must hunt down by talking to the different NPCs or possibly player characters throughout the map. You will never have an NPC quarry, although instead of players seeing your actual screenname, you have an "identity" so you can hide amoungst the NPCs. Once you find your quarry, you must stalk him until you are in a sucluded place that you can get a good shot/stab/whatever off on him without anyone seeing you. Once you kill him, you earn money. The goal is to earn as much money as possible. See where this game is going now?
But ah, where do the moods come into play between the fragging? Well, people dont like to get killed, they lose money because thats a rather large hospital bill to revive someone. So they tend to stick around crowded areas where people will be seen if they attempt to assassinate others that are their quarry. In order to keep these people from staying there, these people have <b>needs.</b> Ah? See how it works? Now they must leave the safty of the crowd to use the restroom, where their hunter might stalk them to, and finish them off in private in there.
This is just my description. The game is extreamly fun, and I encourage you to read a better description at the main site.. because mine just doesnt do the game justice! Its so fun to stalk the your quarry, just waiting for the right moment to pounce. Once my quarry thought he was safe in the main lobby around a bunch of other players/NPCs, but alas, he wasnt. I slowly strolled to an upper balchony that circles around the lobby, and ever so slowly glanced around to make sure no one was watching. Once I was assure, I drew my revolver, took aim upon my quarrys head (who was still in the crowd, mind you), and fired. After he went down, I quickly hid my revolver again and slowly walked away from the crime scene to eat a well deserved dinner, and read a well deserved book, and take a well deserved nap (which was short lived.. I became the victim of my own hunter shortly after. Victory is sweet while it lasts..). <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif' /><!--endemo-->

OMG TEH SHIPZORS IS HERE!! EVERY1 GO DOWNLOADS B/C I SAYS SO
<a href='http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=ship' target='_blank'>I really don't know.</a>
My only problem is that the game is far too easily ruined by idiots. There needs to be added penalty to kills which are not your quarry.
<b>Edit:</b> Also I suggest reading or at least skimming the play guide, it really helps understand the gameplay. (Such as certain weapons are not permitted to be drawn inside of safe zones, and what exactly everything on the HUD means, etc).
<a href='http://files.filefront.com/3576443;/gamingfiles/Half-Life/Mods/The_Ship' target='_blank'>http://files.filefront.com/3576443;/gaming...e/Mods/The_Ship</a>
I couldnt find a link to the newest version (048) or whatever.
Great concept. But idiots factors are definitely there. And also, may be because I'm a newbie, but I'm not having so much fun now. Not enough time to find my victim, and those needs are more like a nuisance. Needs more stalking.
(It's like NS in the sense that it's best to play with people you know)

Wow, that was the most useless reply ever. How about answering my question with a "It takes place on a ship" or "All assassination-themed mods with ambiguous names take place on ships" or something that's actually useful?

That version worked fine for me, the other international download link on their site appears messed up, however.
As for the name The Ship, maybe its called that because all the events of the game take part on well... the ship.
HL1 The ship is just a pre release of the game, they intend to get a proper licensed engine and retail the game sometime.
I used to play it alot when it just came out, it's a fun game. Allthough it's true that with many players the fun factor drops. If you have more than 6 players, your quarry chances far too often, and people tend to get spawnkilled at the start.
A fun thing is to somehow place a satchel at the infirmiary and then poison your quarry with the syringe. The poor bastard will run to the infirmiary to cure himself, and as soon as you see the red dot connect with the orange dot on the radar, you press the red switch and your quarry explodes in a grand shower of blood and money. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
The harder weapons tend to give you more cash, since they aren;t used much. Grenade/RPG/syringe kills can easily net you $10.000. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Sometimes people forget about the cheap weapons for a while, and the prize for killing with it jumps skyhigh. It then becomes a race to see who can first kill their quarry with the umbrella for example. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
we should pick a server and claim it as the unofficial NS forumites' server and meet up there...

When I got it when it first came out, it did.
Wrong.
It's amazing how *not* inconspicious some of these people are. -.-
They should really decrease the run speed, or make it make you tired faster or something. People run around too much the way it is.
<!--QuoteBegin-PvtBones+--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> (PvtBones)</td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->whats teh current query time ?<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Well, there really is no quarry time, per say. In the beginning, everyone is assigned a quarry (as usual). Whoever kills their quarry first, starts the countdown which is thirty seconds long, until that hunt is over. Once the countdown ceases, you no longer have a quarry, and another twenty - thirty seconds countdown begins until you get another quarry (prefably a good time to take care of a basic need, since your safe, or scrounge around for weapons that will earn you some mumbo bucks!). I've had rounds that have lasted five seconds, and others that have lasted fifteen minutes, it really varys and is extreamly fun.
<!--QuoteBegin-Psyke+--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> (Psyke)</td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Tis very very fun.

Its their own fault if they are running around and not inconspicious, trying to blend into the crowd. Its only all the easier for the hunter, and soon enough you'll realize these people get killed first. I disagree with with making the run speed less, or getting tired faster, because besides making the "rest need" bar rise way to fast and making you rest to often, it makes people actually have to watch that bar like its a stamina bar, which takes away from the overall fun. Needs arent there to be movement nazis, there to keep you from sitting in one place to long.
<!--QuoteBegin-sawce+--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> (sawce)</td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->My only problem is that the game is far too easily ruined by idiots. The game -can- be ruined by idoits a lot, but only if your on an absolutly horrible server. Right now the penalty for killing innocents is -$2000 big ones, which will put you in the pot right down to -$20,000, which automatically boots you from the server (NOTE: <b>ALL SERVERS</b>, I dont believe this value can changed) until the next map rotation, which is the idoit proof system. Kill ten people like a moron on purpose, your outta there. And lamers dont like to wait for map changes, so they probably wont come back.
<!--QuoteBegin-Dr.Suredeath+--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> (Dr.Suredeath)</td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Tried it.
Great concept. But idiots factors are definitely there.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Yes, the idoit factor is there, but hardly at any time. Its just like having lamers in any other game, you really cant control them, so you just have to get over them. Those are the people that kill themselves eventually in life by getting kicked in the face by a cow, they wont be there too long.
<!--QuoteBegin-Dr.Suredeath (continued)+--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> (Dr.Suredeath (continued))</td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->And also, may be because I'm a newbie, but I'm not having so much fun now. There is plenty of stalking, refer to the comment I made about about the "stalk" time you have. But, probably the game mode in "The Ship" your looking for is "elimination." I'm not sure how it works, but it doesnt end when the first person kills their quarry, so there is plenty of stalking time, read up about it on the main site.
<!--QuoteBegin-JezPuh+--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> (JezPuh)</td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->This game sucks lol.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Burn in <b>hell</b>. This game might have been bad when it first came out, but its an absolute blast now. But uh.. for future reference, dont come onto a thread and say "this ____ sucks lol" because it contributes nothing but turning people away from what might possibly be the most fun they've ever had.
The server I play on is <b>[OL]TheShipUK2_V48_Hunt_Hard</b>. There are three difficultys on this set of servers that I just mentioned above, which I imagine can be set in the server options menu for the server OP, you'll see the difficultys in the titles (easy, medium, and hard). Hard difficulty makes it so your quarry doesnt show up on your radar, which is the funnest, because there is a really long period of stalking time, and a lot less of people running around immediatly to their quarry. Also, their name doesnt show up as red, so skimming the crowd looking for a little bit of red anywhere doesnt work either. I believe medium your quarry doesnt show up on radar (these are just guesses here folks) and their names are red when you look at them, and easy they show up on your radar.
Everyone play on the hard server, thats the server I frequent with my friends.. and a note: We'll be calling this game TSS, because TS is taken, and a ship is called SS.. hehe. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
