for people who are really immersed
I remember when I used to play on the Team Fun server we sometime used to throw out battlecries. (we were really immersed into the game, like this one guy used to freak out and scream like a girl if a skulk ambushed him ) Ah yes the day where we used to do thing liek we meant it and for honor. If your squad's commrades was killed it was honorable to go bezerk for revenge. For many of us defeat was never an option. We play to win and fight it out to the end.
Anyways I haven't been able to play for awhile and I wonder if NS still has that magic of fighting besides you friends, a game where people will play in-character and help aide immersion. Anyone ever tried it? It's sooo much more fun to have everyone roleplaying in-character and doing things like it's for real.
One of the things we did to help teamspirit and be in character was to make battlecries or catch phrases, usually in Latin. (because they were all British and I like to use latin phrases) Here are some we used: (some are battlecies some are just phrases we like to use)
Dum spiramus tuebimur -- While we breathe we shall defend
Fabricati diem -- make my day
Facta, non verba -- deeds not words; actions speak loder than words
Cogito Ergo Sum. -- I think therefore I am
magister mundi sum -- I am master of the universe (when one is gloating because they just solo pwned some people)
Feles mala -- bad kitty (skulk)
Homo, aeterna -- Humanity everlasting (marine only)
Natura in maxima -- nature in the greatest (skulk only)
Nihil obstat -- nothing stands [in the/our way]
vivi ut vivas -- live that you may live (one of our favorites)
Vivat, crescat, floreat -- live, grow, flourish
Vivat Commande -- Long live the commander (marine only)
Periculum in mora -- there is danger/peril in delay
and anything we wanted after the word Pro (for) like: Pro coitem (actually we usually used pro alvarium or pro cubile as there was arguement as to which better translated as hive)
We liked to use the latin mostly because it sounds cool and most of the other people didn't know what it meant. Obviously we didn't talk exclusively in Latin but someone yelling out randomly pro coitem (for sex) would make the people who know what it mean in Latin laugh.
Anyways it doesn't have to be latin, in fact I usually like naming strategies I come up with not just to make it easy and brief but also to futher immersion. I just recommend acting in character. It's usually contageous if you do good acting (but not annoying).
So here's what my points/querries are for this thread:
What battlecries do you use?
What things do you do to help immersion?
I find that when we are all really into the game my skill increases more and excellent teamwork comes natural. Plus it's just a lot more fun.

I think having a battlecry or just playing in-character well witha group of people is both part of an actual strategy to get everyone playing their best & teamworking and also to get more fun & enjoyment out of the game.
I didn't get your "Pro coitem (for sex)" thing, but I'm sure it would have been funny a coupla thousand years ago.
Yep we also added sir. You always addressed you SL, FC, or CCC as Sir. It may seem like a minor thing but adding yes sir and no sir adds a lovely military flavor to the game and amke it really fun.
As aliens in character is like acting like a fat man after hot dogs: "I. Am. HUNGRY!" Saying "Bacon!" is now commonpalce but back then is was fun to have everyone go "It'sss bacon!!" at the same time. As alien is good to take your rage out on humanity. Imagine those marines are all the stupid people you hate and then get passionate about killing them. You can still use the yes sir / no sir as alien as it adds a lot of respect which in turn makes people usually more polite back to you. I dont' know how it is now but we usually let gorges be the "commanders" and the fades or best skulks be the squad leader, the onos was essentially no more than a big piece of mobile artillery the lerk was kinda like the support gunners. Good teamworking with lerks and fades or skulks can be really devastating.
But while all this adds atmosphere and fun to roleplay in-character, I feel that it also is a bit of a strategy in that it draws people into wanting to do their best. I feel I play much better when I have this immersion and we work much more fluidly and effectively as a team. It also helps encourage newbies to play. I remember on day I had a team with 50% newbies and we won against a team of all non-newbies because I took them by the hand and we got the job done.
"Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups." -- a favorite T-Shirt of mine
(dustbowl defense for example, even newbies can understand the simplicity of kill enemies comming in though here and thus the fun and deadly firewall of teamworking nadespam was born)
I would love to hear some personal experience stories in this thread as well.
PS: If you don't recongnize me do you remember goddy, ZXNet, Wyld Thing, Paul Pyro, Rushakra, or any of these names: http://www.xzianthia.net/onos_power2.jpg
Tell me stories people, or what are some of the battle cries you use. Get a few friends and try it out. If have any question on how to be in character I'd love to offer tips.

That would be me in the cc, 5 seconds before either the phase goes down or the hive goes down .
with an occasional orkish battlecry when I phase into a hive or battle

Seize the Gorge is now my MSN handle.
Off-topic: Anyone for a game of capture the gorge(ctg!!)? MvsM?
cg_ maps would pwn...
xD
That was around 2.0
"Yarr kill the skurvy on portside"
"Ahoy thar be onos!"
One time I shouted "For Overlord King Laharl!" and one guy laughed. Props if you know what game I'm speaking of.
I have a sound byte of an orc from Warcraft saying "For the horde!" that I used a few times before the server kicked me for "voice spamming." Haven't used it since.

rename the .jpg file to .zip and enjoy my all time favorite "battlecry" haha
I use this one if i run through the Hive with my HMG killing everything in Sight.
Again though, has anyone ever tried playing in-character with a group of friends and found out that it actually improves your gameplay? (the battlecry and acting in-character working as a strategy in of itself)
"I will die for our cause!"
"For the motherland!"
"Allah!"
"What is your major malfunction numnuts?"
"This is my rifle, this is my gun!"
And other movie/game quotes... Nothing original really
It's always fun to march to a hive and play "CMON YOU MAGGOTS DO YOU WANNA LIVE FOREVER?" from starship troopers.
Role Playing adds a lot to a game, even a FPS can be role played. . . specially NS.
or DAIKATANA!!!!!
Or I EAT FOR CHIRST XD
On Planetside, my outfit's teamspeak channel, there was one night where everyone was playing songs because it was a relatively quiet night, fighting wise. One guy (rob) played Aqua - Barbie Girl and i said "That has so gotta be our battle theme"... and it stuck. Next day, we were galaxy dropping all over the place to the tune of "Barbie Girl". Which was quite funny since there was a new recruit, and this guy called Redemption said "Rob.... play the battle theme" in this really deep and serious voice, and then barbie girl starts playing.... it was great.

That's actually a rip-off quote of a famous US Marine

QUOTE (Gunnery Sergeant Dan Daly @ 4 june 1918.

And I do love this quote but I prefer the original.
(and actually that quote is inspired by the Spartans, those famous Greek warrior dudes)

While the talk about acting like pirates is amusing, I am going to assume that none of you have ever tried playing in character. 'Tis a shame. It's really fun when you get a whole server really into it.
