Marine Exploit

<div class="IPBDescription">Though they kinda need it right now</div> I have no idea where bugs/exploits go, so I'll just post it here.

As a commander, I can hear the sound of a beating hive when I bring my view over certain rooms, whether I have a marine near the location or not. While this doesn't seem important to most people, it allows me to know very quickly where the aliens spawn (which I doubt is intended), and what strategies I can use based on that fact. Often, I'll send marine strike teams to take and defend the empty hives early in the game without having to sacrifice time or men "scouting" the map out first, and if it works, it can put the aliens in a very precarious position.

...though, the marines sort of need a cheap tactic to abuse right now, considering the mass alien 0wnage that occurs on most servers.

Comments about "Alien Ownage" disgust me. I have been on plenty of servers where it has gone both ways many times, people need to stop saying stuff like that.

That sounds like a bug to me.

Another bug I'd like to report is how the entire screen shakes whenever the commander is over an area that is being bile bombed.

It is very annoying when trying to place something.

Maybe you have been on servers where the marines have won, but having played around 25 games in the last week, I can safely say that only ONE marine team ever won. And that was because the alien team was full of newbies, and the marines with both more players and a relatively experienced commander.

The remaining 24 games were nothing short of total and unconditional alien ownage. I think that entitles me to make such comments.

No it doesnt. You know how many games were played in total by everyone playing the mod? Unless you talk to everyone one that plays, and get their opinion, your statement holds no weight.

I consider races equal, considering there are the same number of players each side and that the marines have <b>a good commander</b>. Think about the <!--emo&::siege::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/siege.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='siege.gif'><!--endemo--> which are great when they work propertly, or the <!--emo&::onos::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tiny.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='tiny.gif'><!--endemo--> when you need them <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

I dont really see that as an exploit. All you hear is the sound of the hive. Also, the hives can be placed in a preselected area(Done by the mappers), so you should already expect to know a hive will be there one way or another.
  • Chopper_Dave1Chopper_Dave1 Join Date: 2002-11-01 Member: 2353Members
The starting hive seems to be almost always randomly chosen (Eclipse is the only map where I haven't seen it happen). I think the idea is that marines aren't supposed to immediately know where the aliens are in the beginning of the game, while the aliens always know where the marines are.

And I don't suppose YOU know the results of the total games played by every Natural Selection player in the world either, Moebius and Epyon - so technically, your opinions "hold no weight," either.

You can add my list of 20 Alien wins (to no Marine victories) to your tally Dave.

And its not like they were all the same people either. Indeed, some games the two teams switched, and the marines STILL lost. Regardless of what other people say, that SHOULD NOT happen. What is implies is that something is still wrong balance-wise. And dont give me that garbage of "its too early to tell", and think we ALL agreed that it was unbalanced before the patch.

The funny thing is, it probably only needs a minor tweek to right this problem, because currently the marines ARE able to put up a good fight, just that in the long run they get ground down.

I've won as a commander, you just need to plan out your attack from the beginning. Just like playing Starcraft or another RTS. It really helps to know the map first though.

Yep, I've been playing a ton of marine games lately, and we've been winning pretty consistantly <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

Sorry your marine game isn't up to par, better luck and more practice in the future. The n00bs are just now beginning to realize "oh n0, i cann0t b3 a l337 l0n3 ramb0 type!"

It is a feature, not a bug, that the commander can hear anything in the map, and can see alien projectiles even if he cannot see the alien itself. I made the same comment to Flayra during playtesting, and he said it was intentional.

Lol it's funny to always see the aliens are too weak or marines are to weak whining. I think they're pretty balanced. But marines need a good comm and good teamwork, if they dont have a good comm or at least one small team that works together, they lose... Simple as that. If marines secure a few resource nodes and a hive (extremly important to get a hive defended early) then they can last long enough till HA and HMG/GL... And once they have that they have the advantage. One marine with HA and HMG should always win vs a fade, certainly with comm/teammate backup. If you get a team of 3 marines, 2 with HMG, HA and welders and one with GL, HA and welder you got one deadly force. Add to that a comm who works with them, keeps them allive and armed (ammo) you have something most alien teams cant stop. (Because aliens, like marines, dont work together too much either, but as alien it's not so bad to go solo) Now stop saying marines are too weak, it IS too early to tell for marines (well in most cases), because most commanders are still learning.

Every game that I've played in since the patch the aliens have won. Unless the marines had an experienced or outstanding commander with players to go along with that, which has only been encountered once for me. I'm not saying that anything is uneven, just that most of the games I've played the Commanders don't really know the buttons, or they don't know what they're doing very well.

Did you read the back story? This can be explained by the nano network on the space ship and nano-congestion. Everything is connected with a nano network. The only reason you <b>can't</b> see and hear <i>everything</i> is because of the alien "congestion" of the network. Otherwise you <i>would</i> be able to hear and see everything.

I think the game is <b>well balanced</b> at this point, and we don't need to bring up somewhat irrelavent things. I don't think this is a bug. It is explained in the back story.

The game is well balanced, but balance changes as players become more familiar with the game.

Chopper Dave, this game is based on the future and i wouldn't actually call it a bug <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> after all humans are indeed fighting in their homeworld no an alien planet <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->

it takes 30 minutes of printing out a map, and running around by yourself with sv_cheats on building crap, testing ranges/line of sight, running around as a skulk to learn ambush points (both for marines and skulks strategically)... to formulate a decent build order/strategy. oh yeah, you also need half a brain.

hell, i didn't even notice this bug... though it is definitely an exploit. say eclipse... if you know the hive is on eclipse, then you can almost always tell your team that rush is most likely coming from left side, hell stack your marines to the right of the room heh... see how that works? little stuff like that adds up... but it really shouldn't be much of an issue on random pubs... because the lack of skill and cooperation from 90% of the servers i join just astonishes me. i mean , sometimes it takes me a good 9 or 10 tries to get a decent server with good people... used to take me about 2-3 times just a week ago.

the 10 matches I played were all dominated by the aliens. the marines are more difficult to play, they need a good commander and decent teamplay more than the aliens do. hopefully, commanders and marines will learn quickly, to kick some serious slimeball-**obscenity**. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='asrifle.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

I'm finding NS to be pretty well balanced, just last night I was in a 4-5 hour game. Going back and forth until we finally crushed the marines. Just think once more people become more 'l33t' what kind of battles will be going on.

As for that being an 'exploit' I would doubt it, just maybe a bug which can really effect the game.

    there's a quote i read somewhere...

"after the patch and the marines are weakened people will start complaining that the aliens are to powerful" -unknown

IMHO the game is pretty balenced, the only problem is finding good teammates, i play commander regularly, when i have marines that listen and accually stick together, we tend to win. but in the games where they don't stick together and try to be hero, we lost. the only thing i know of in 'alien ownage' is when they rush off the start and your marines aren't the best shot. two skulks just distroy us. i think there needs to be prebuilt marine spawn points, or at least one anyway.

eclipse (long hallways, and corners to fill, with blind spots for aliens... not to mention a very long run to the command chair and the area around it.

bast... one big elevator shaft to look at, push the button for it to go up and you have an even smaller hole the aliens are to pop out from, close the door below, and you have an alarm on when exactly the skulks are about to rush, the revolving door is already a tell-tale sign that something is coming out, and the command console dock is an open space to shoot from and give protection. that leaves... the vent.

caged... one vent, and doorways... wanna know where to hide? here's a couple, up the stairs at the command console, at the dark spot near the resource node, just around the hive drop down, the two blind spots from the doors.

taninth has lots of good spots to hide from too, from shadowy corners near boxes (lol i love the feeling as seeing a skulk run toward there thinking he should "hide" just to be met with an LMG right in the face), the elevator...

theres TONS of spots marines can hide at and slow down the aliens a good 1-2 seconds to look around the rooms and go where the fk are those marines... and that's enough time to splatter even 8-10 of them at a time. they have em in all maps... you just have to think "if i was a lame CS camper, where would i hide". think like a camper, and be hated by the aliens as if you were a camper.

See, even though you think its balanced, you still suggest a minor tweek... and I agree with you! That sounds like a good idea as it eliminates rush and means mariens can start building other stuff sooner.

See minor stuff like this (or something similar) is all thats needs in my opinion in order to fine tune. I dont think anyone is suggesting we completely change how the game plays, just something small to fine tune the flow of the game.

Its pretty balanced, but something is still just out.

lol, yeh, i just got out of a long **obscenity** game. marines were in a impossible situation, we couldn't not advance, but the aliens couldn't quite kill us off, it ended as the aliens giving up because we started to make progress. they had 3 hives, we had only 2 resource points
  • TerrTerr Arthritic Skulk Join Date: 2002-11-07 Member: 7486Members
Hmm... regarding 'hearing' the hive and stuff... it WOULD be nice if audio cues to the commander were restricted to marine-held areas, because for a headphoned commander the cues can be very informative. I have seen VERY FEW uses of the sensor ping in this game, probably because a familiar commander can go over and say: "Hmm, sounds like defensive turret gulp noises...."
  • OR-GOR-G Join Date: 2002-11-07 Member: 7643Members
Right now there are wayyyyy too many new players.

Here's a reason why a lot of the times the alien's will win. The marines require teamwork, strategy, and a good commander. With this they could easily win. (Not trying to brag) I'm a good pretty good skulk and great with fade, I'm also a good marine, and I know what strategy will usually work to win for marines. However, when I play as commander I've got people playing Rambo, others who think they are commander and people follow them, people who whine(I hate them), the rambos who find a resource point and tell me 50 times as if I had no idea it was there and I don't even have resources to build it, the times when you get people who whine for weapons and armor... I drop a couple hmg's and a couple armor, then a guy with the hmg is complaining again that he didn't get a shotgun(?!?!?), people who ask for health, don't tell me where they are, then blame me that they died, when I never gave them the command to go to that area in the first place, etc etc....

Anyways, all of this makes me not want to be commander, and I usually just stop once I see no one follows my command, and I just go to spectate or join aliens. Another thing that makes me want to stop playing as marines is when you've got a commander who doesn't have the right strategy to win, and doesn't exactly know what he's doing. Atleast on aliens you don't have to rely on a commander to guide the way. That's why I prefer aliens, because most people are going to do what they want anyways, and the resources are distributed. Plus you don't get that constant nagging, or whining over voice chat.
  • flippoflippo Join Date: 2002-11-01 Member: 3022Members
I hardly ever play with a good commander. The only good commander I've ever played with is my friend, and he doesn't like being commander anymore because no one listens. I think relying on a good commander isn't very fair. Good commander's are few and far between.

Maybe I'm playing on the wrong servers...
  • flippoflippo Join Date: 2002-11-01 Member: 3022Members
OR-G is right on all accounts. I hate it when people don't listen or whine. When I'm commander (never anymore), I tell these people straight up "You aren't getting anything, <b>ever.</b>"
  • UmbrallaUmbralla Join Date: 2002-11-10 Member: 7991Members
Honestly I find marines to be very strong with a proper commander who keeps issuing orders and stuff. A commander that is too busy turret farming to set waypoints for his marines is what usually causes them to lose.
