I present to you exhibit A

I play at a low resolution, as my system is low end. It maximizes my frame rates, and I'm just used to a small res + 90 fov.

Now, I ignored this for the longest time. Till I just can's ignore no more.

I've tried 800 x 600. It helps, very slightly. Almost not noticeable at all though. Now if i push my system to its max res of 1024, my fps bottoms out at like crap. pure crap. Sure I can read text easier but if a game is able to run at all resolutions available, then HUD text should be no problems.

I've made a few posts commenting on this here and there, and like I said I stuck with it cause NS is a fun little mod, I enjoy it. Awesome work all around. But it's just gotten to the point I cant stand not knowing what health or armor I'm at.

And before you say "Well it's kinda dark, pop up the gamma?" I play all HL games at max gamma, makes it a ton easier to see. problem is when I take screen shots (even with just windows default prnt screen button) they come out really darker than i see them ingame. so its not a gamma issue thats making me not see its the OVERLAPPING TEXT THAT SERVES ME NO REAL POINT OTHER THAN TO HIDE MY HP AND AP

devs are obviously still working on this mod, as beta 5 came out and theres plans for beta 6. theres got to be some fix for it OTHER THAN playing in 1024

*edit* sorry, i had to laugh when the damn forum censors out the name w`t`f.jpg

i've tried the various font fixes

while they do kinda help, with the overlapping text on the left, it doesnt help with the test on the right, the status text like in CO maps where it tells you the status of the chair or hive. not to mention using the custom font to even get a slight change in the text makes the rest of the ingame text small. the rest of the text was fine, now I gotta strain to read to what people say or who killed who

obviously the devs can formulate some kind of working fix that just templates all the stuff into one area

Just so you know, the reason your screens come out darker is nothing to do with your settings, its just down to the env_gamma entity placed in the map, which alters the gamma ramp.

hmm i can see that being a royal pain in the arse. is there not a sprite pack or cvar somewhere that can make all the fonts/writing smaller for lower resolutions?

also while we're on the subject, is there a way (or could there possibly be a way in a future release) to move the chat text? the middle left of the screen is really bloody annoying. i want it like q3 where its all nicely positioned at the top to avoid obstructiong your view. of course this problem isnt so bad at my reslolution (1280x1024) but i can certainly see it bugging the hell out of ppl like mav! it used to **** me right off when i used to run it at 800x600, specially when the steam fonts got bigger.

It was annoying but I got used to that.

Major problem now is, the different font "fixes" I've tried via the forums here is that, they make ALL the fonts uber small. Chat, kill messages, build messages etc When playing ns_ maps it's pretty damn hard to see what teammates are saying in team chat cause the text is so tiny. It seems like an unfair tradeoff, the very minimal space the small text gives is hardly anything compared to the insanely small text it provides that you're forced to read. imagine if i upped the resolution (assuming i wouldnt lose fps rates, which i would), it'd be un-readable.

There has to be a way the devs can hard code in options or just a simplistic gui fix for low resolution users. Even at 800x600 the text still overlaps the huds even with font "fixes". If you can't play a game in 800x600 without hud discrepencies, then its the development problem not a user problem. most top end games these days are starting to be run in 800x600. Take Doom 3, you can make a kick **** system that runs it in a decent rate at 1024 but take it down a notch too 800 and it can practically double the rates of fps and refresh. Same here. Sure I can play 1024 but I'd be getting like 5 fps where as i can get near 40 in 640x480.

It's sad when I can only tell my health and armor are low only because of the red text changes due to low numerical value. If it wasn't for that Id never know I was at 4 health and 10 armor ;o
