Umbra Question

shield or cloak???
I have recently found my niche in the Kharaa hierarchy.. Gotta love the lerks.. Umbra and a few fades is just
awe inspiring. Have a question though.

When I employ the umbra, do we have to actually stand in it to work, or can I spit it out and back up and still
have it shielding the space between that HMG and my fades?

I would like to know how the umbra works too.

I think when it says "In umbra" down the bottem is when u are affected by it, but sum times it will say In umbra but i am taking full damage ? I think it should be if ur in the cloud it affects u, move out of it, it doesnt. (if it is this way well spank me and call be Johnny Boy

Umbra will stay where you place it even after you move. It's kind of like a shield cloud. So as a lerk you can duck out to give your fades room to acid rocket the poor marines. Umbra stops one out of every 10 bullets that go to it. But just because that one bullets makes it through doesn't mean it'll hit you, Umbra also doesn't work on grenades.

Mostly right, but the latest ive heard umbra stops 6 out of 7 bullets, or maybe it is 7 out of 8. But yes it only works on those standing inside of the cloud, and it should say "In Umbra" when you are in the cloud.

I think he meant can he run forward, cast umbra, and backpedal again and still retain its effects.

It seems to work for me that way, but I'm not completely sure as I tend to keep Fades between me and the turrets.

yeah, wondering if it works like a quasi-wall (where me and my fade friends can stand behind the cloud) or if your only protected if you are inside of it.

I believe that due to the way halflife uses hitscan weapons (bullets that aren't actual bullets), umbra only protects creatures inside of it. I think the system treats umbra as like an extra layer of armor, it doesn't even attempt to track the random bullet hits.

So, no, I doubt you can use it like a shield when you're not in it.

Here is the low down on umbra:
    - It will stop 6 our of 7 bullets
    - It will only protect you while in the cloud
    - Once placed, it will not move
    - You can exit and re-enter it as long s it's still there

It has a fairly wide radius, though, so you can still back up quite a bit.

Yeah, its a little odd because theoretically, IRL as long as the cloud is between you and the guy firing, the bullets will be blocked. So you could be outside it and safe. But i'm assuming its FAR FAR easier to code for the 'in umbra' volume than trying to do bullet pathing.

Whatever. Its still an essential ability and very worthwile.
