While HL was definitly not the first game Ive played that got me into PC gaming its probably definitly the most definitive in terms of a FPS with a storyline, (along with its expansion packs and mods)

So ill probably go all out and get the collectors edittion.

Getting it through steam sounds like a nice idea but I want a nice hard copy as well.

Then burn the .gcf files to a disc. I feel like I'm going crazy repeating myself. If you're scared of the Government Alien Space Nazis from Roswell that will sneak onto your computer and delete all your Half-Life 2 files and then sneak into Valve's servers and delete your Steam account and then sneak onto your credit card and delete the payment, then you can burn the fricken .gcfs to a cd and be done with it. Ta da! That was easy.

I get an employee discount when I buy retail. Half-Life 2 CE is affordable, the only reason to buy Silver is for the extras. If they don't offer the extras to buy seperately, I'll be mighty irritated. It's not like I'm betraying them by purchasing the game through my employer, oh how terrible that I take some load off their servers.

Im going with the simple retail.
    for a few reasons

firstly in the UK we get 1 dvd instead of 6 cds (and no im not talking about CE)
so no messing about with swapping discs.

Secondly youg et all the advantages of steam.Meaning that when you've registered your cd key via steam you wont need the dvd anymore. It can be safely shelved. You wills till be able to download the full game via steam say if you go round a friend's house or even lose the cd <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

so the only thing u dont get via going retail is to play cs:s right now. But personally id rather play HL2 before cs:s and u dont get dod:s (never played dod neevr will play dod:s or HL1:S which id never play either) and you get a nice disc for if steam is ever down or to easily install when you format.

    So personally i prefere retail option <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

hL2 is 100 bucks... BUT THE HAT AND POSTERS ARE FREE!

hl2 is 50 bucks... BUT THE VOICE ACTING IS FREE

doom3 is 50 bucks... BUT THE ONLINE PORTION IS FREE!

Yeah, so basically because portions are now "free" in games companies remove all responsibility from them.

    I don't get it forlorn..

all games are released with bugs. And then they get patched. Generaly a tops of 5 times on most games, however if valve keeps with its track record, we will see dozens of patches for each aspect of HL2 (that would included CS:S)

I orriginally planned to buy a Saphire Radeon XT / 9800 (not sure what exact model,) and get a voucher. However I'll think I'll survive with a slightly laggy Radeon 9000, so bought it for 25,99 UK pounds. Or something about that.

Not too sure if it is CE or not; wishful thinking. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I would never trust steam to "remember" that it was my SteamID that owned (well not owned, as it's not your intellectual property,) HL2. I'd feel much better with a nice reliable good old-fashioned DVD.

I am probably going to be getting the silver. The gold is just way to expensive. It’s a good thing that it will be coming out beginning of next month cuz I don’t get my check for September till the end of October. Messed up isn’t that?

hmm, according to <a href='http://pc.boomtown.net/en_uk/articles/art.view.php?id=6377' target='_blank'>This</a> article, HL2 will only be available in DVD form(retail)

I wonder if this means that they will only sell the CE, or if the regular version will come as DVD, but not 6 CDs

But then what happens to the CE?

Does anyone have some european online stores where they let you pre-order HL2 CE?

    I would like a dvd instead of 6 cd's

    Edit:

Hm i hope the above post is correct, don't want cd's >_<

    <a href='http://www.amazon.co.uk' target='_blank'>Amazon</a> is preordering a DVD version, but i'm not sure quite what version it is <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Other than that, it looks like none are stocking the CE for pre-orders yet.

I'm likely to find a small shop, the kind that not many people go to, and is likely not to be sold out.

I think I'll change my mind now that I hear that the gold edition costs 1050 SEK after tax and freight, rather than 750-ish which I originally thought...

So? The headset I bought at Best Buy cost me 20 dollars on sale (25 reg), on the manufacter's website it was listed at 35.

UK and maybe europe are not getting the retail with 6 cds.
Instead the retail edition is coming out on DVD it wont be availble on CD's at least for the UK.
So if you have preordered a cheap version of HL2 in UK and Europe on DVD then it is retail and not the CE

Now I've just gone ahead and bought the Silver HL package. I probably should have checked this beforehand, but anyways, here goes: I can download the package multiple times right? For example, I format my system and throw a fresh XP install on here, then go to install HL2. I can get it from Steam again right? Right?
  • sawcesawce Join Date: 2002-12-14 Member: 10787Members
The <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=81650&st=0&hl=' target='_blank'>old poll</a> for this (before the Steam packages were announced) has results completely conflicting to this one.

I guess the Silver package goodies, and being able to play around with the new fancy engine now, instead of in <insert time until release> days/weeks/months/years/millennia was just a bit too much.

I'm surprised so many people bought through Steam, considering all the ranting and raving I'm hearing about purchasing through Steam. I consider the majority of the ranting to be gibberish, and a lot of it comes from the same people who flame Valve at every chance.

For the record, I got silver.

Valve played it smart, in my opinion, with the packaging. If for nothing more, all the added packages, and prospect of playing CS:S (even though it still seems unfinished) immediately really helped sway the people who still weren't set in stone for which way they're purchasing. Also it really probably grabbed a lot of impulse shoppers as well.

Now if only they can take the money they're swimming in and use it to fix the friends network. :(

And yes, Ryo. So long as you keep your Steam account information you can download it from their content servers as much as you want.

I had originally planned to get the Silver package, then remembered that I like having a physical disc in my hands when I get a game, so I decided for the CE. My reason is that I get the other mods that I occasionally play (enough to warrant getting it) not to mention instead of around6 CDs, I get one DVD, a value that I feel is worth my money simpley because multiple CD cases litter my desk and I have no where to put them. I consider hte +$20(?) for getting a physical medium that takes less space and thus, less likely to get lost in a clutter, well worth it. As for the shirt, I could always pin it to my wall or something since I have to wear a minimum of 3X just for my broad shoulders and height. (Of course being around 50 pounds over weight doesn't help much either...)
  • SnidelySnidely Join Date: 2003-02-04 Member: 13098Members
Meh, I'm going for Bronze instead. I managed to find out how much it costs plus tax (which Steam doesn't let you do until you've put in your card details. Bugger that), and it's more than retail. I'll be happy with CS:S and HL2.
