Best Mic For Voice Comm?

QuantumSlipQuantumSlip Join Date: 2002-11-03 Member: 6318Members

Its pretty hard to communicate w/o voice
I really didnt see the need for voice communcation, but with NS and the advent of commandering, and plus needed teamwork, I really need to find a good mic or headset or something to communicate with. What do you guys recommend?

I've found it isn't so much the mic, but your connection. I have the crappy little mic that came with my computer, and i sound better than 80% of people i've heard talking.

The mic that came with my soundcard (Creative SB Live! X-Gamer) seems to work perfectly.

Any headset mic should do well.

    I use a Labtec Axis 502, and it's great.

Labtec and Playtronics are some of the cheap (yet still having excellent quality) headset mic creators out there, IMO.

I believe mine was about $20 at Comp USA.

also, make sure your sound card has a mic boost feature. it amplifys your voice for others. the sound card that came with my computer has it but my new one that has 4-channel audio does not. so i use 2 sound cards. 1 for the surrond sound and one for the mic.

Hmm...does anyone know if the Audigy has that mic boost feature? I'm thinking I need a mic now, since this mod works SO MUCH BETTER with it (I've noticed 'tis so much easier to be commander, and to get the commander's attention with the voice comm feature.)

I'm thinking of purchasing a mic now, and I need one with a nice, long cable...any suggestions?

If you want a standing mic, use the Labtec Verse 514. $8.99 Canadian and it's beautiful quality. 6 foot cable, too.

I agree completely with Typhon. I use that crappy little "chopstick" mic that came with my 486 computer a LONG time ago(THAT'S RIGHT, a 486) and it works fine. I've asked some of my friends and they said I sounded crystal clear. I would buy a relatively cheap, standard mic if I were you, which I assume isn't LOADED with cash or u wouldn't have asked this question.

I have a crappy little computer mic which broke it's clip so now I drape it over a projection on my headphones and it dangles next to my cheek. Heh. The thing is, I know the mic itself is pretty good, because I can record/play in windows fine. More often than not it's the coded method/cvars that people have in Half Life that make it much less crisp and clear.

I have a labtec AM-242. It seems to work fine. Although I have not tested it with other people, no-one has bitched about chopiness (and since I am one of the few p33ps that actually keep in contact with comm, they would) and it seems to have a minor pitch shift downwards, good for disguising you age (no relevance here... yes... ) so people take you seriously. These days you could pick one up for... $15AU ($7.50AM for the culturally uneducated) and that's the newer model.

I splurged about a year or so ago and got this. It's a labtec collar mic, which I like better than the headsets because I can wear my own headphones. It's a bit pricey, but I doubt I'll be needing anything else for quite a while and I've had no complaints at all about it's performance.
