Silver it is
I realy wanted that solid disc and box, but it just isn't worth it for $20 more
My main concerns are: HL2 HL:S Not that much $$
so my only option is steam ;(
not that I dislike steam, I just like the manuals and stuf ;(
oh well, droping that $$ when I get home <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

im gettin retails special edition i think. but not for a while, i havnt played a game in a week now with work and school. I think im gonna go out on a limb and buy some food today, something that isnt hard on the stomache. Like food. Real food.
Economics? This is what HL2 is: You either go out and buy a full-featured Lexus brand new for $25,000, or you buy it online, it gets shipped to your house the same day, for the same price of $25,000, but this one has no seats, air conditioning, hubcaps, stereo, or paneling.
How the hell is that economics. Because you people are stupid?
Sucker born every minute I guess. Now I know they all play Half-Life too.

valve CAN'T undercut the stores. It is much the same as if you buy product directly from the company you pay the same rate that you would pay in the store. This is not b/c the company is money gubing, it is b/c they are not alowed to undercut distributors.
so if you wana blame some one, go blame VUG, and then go and give them $$ by buying it in a store <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
What are you talking about? When's the last time a developer published their own games?
Besides, I have three options:
1) Buy it retail, get it right there, with extras.
2) Buy it from Vivendi, or pretty much anywhere online, get the goodies but have to wait.
3) Buy it from Valve, get nothing, have to wait to download it every time.
Hmm...
And the Lexus analogy was perfectly apt. You don't need A/C, a stereo, or paneling to use a car (maybe seats yeah), you only really need a steering system, an engine, a frame, and wheels. That's what HL2 is without the goodies you can get for free.

not published, but distributed?
almost all MMORPGs can bey bought from the creator for the same price as you can buy them in the store, all you get is a CDKey.
And I wasn't refering to that, I was refering to other merchandise. buy some shirts from a name brand from their website, or go into a store and buy it.
So why did I just find a card for $100 less from the ATi store then from Best Buy? Regardless if they're not allowed to undercut the stores, that just shows what a ripoff it really is.

b/c the stores CAN undercut the original company.
company sells at x price to store (x goes down with large orders)
company suggests y price for retail (MSRP manufacturers suggested retail price). Retail can feel free to ignore that (generaly)
oh, and if you try to buy that card from a nromal retalier (regular computer store not a huge international chain like bestbuy) you will probably pay the MSRP (wich is what you could buy it off of their website for)
Yes, bigbuissness can screw small buissness in the arse with their ability to buy in bulk.
Learn some basic economics before you try and yell that valve sucks <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif' /><!--endemo-->

EEK bashing Valve again? I would've <i>never</i> expected that.
Anyway, I'll be using my ATi voucher to pick up the Bronze Package. All I really want is HL2 and the many mods that will come with it, I could care less about CS: S, though I would enjoy getting DoD: S.
Buying silver tomorrow. It'll be fun playing this on 866 mhz. I hit the minimum requirements though <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> Cool beans.
i want to buy retail collectors edition but it only comes in DVD <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> why cant they have the collectors edition with 6 normal cds?
Honestly, all the boxes just take up space. You look at it for 5 minutes on the drive home, maybe once in a while when you take a crap. Same with the manual. The jewel case is just another thing for me to keep up with. If I lose the jewel case, I'm screwed. I lost the jewel case to D2:LOD, and even though I paid good money for it, I can't play it anymore.
However, if I lose the data, I can redownload it. Sure, it may take a few hours, or a day to do it, but its better than shelling out another $50 (or $30 once the price drops). Plus, if valve gives me bullsh*t, I can send it the receipt for my purchase, and I'll get a new copy.
I *always* lose CDs. They vanish into the void around my room and never return. I'll be getting the Silver Steam package, if for no other reason than that. Plus you get nice goodies. HL1: Source is a big feature for me, and heck, CS: Source and DOD: Source would be fun for the occasional change from NS.
If I decide to go with the hard copy of the game, I'll choose the Collector's Edition, mostly because I'd rather deal with 1 DVD than 6 CDs. If I go for an online version, I'm really tempted to spring for the Gold package for the soul purpose of getting the soundtrack CD; Music is a major obsession of mine, even more than video games, but the idea of a video game soundtrack is even cooler. Mostly, I just want to get Halflife 2, Halflife 1: Source, Counterstrike: Source, and the soundtrack disk. If they sell the soundrack separately, I'll get the CE and the soundtrack.
My video card can't handle those games. Sims 2 (tried it), HL 2 (won't bother trying it cause I know my card will cry), and most liekly sadly RCT 3 won't work. I will enjoy going back to my classic Roller Coaster Tycoon, Zoo Tycoon and rpgs, after NS dies.

I would like to play it on the source engine.
HL is still one of my favorite games. simple aint it?

cd and box != stereo, ac, seats, panels etc.
