Robotech!

<div class="IPBDescription">:D</div>Yesterday when I was making my idiotic purchases at Best Buy, I also was at Gamestop, just browsing, and they had used Robotech DVDs. They had 1,2,4,and 5 of Robotech: The Macross Saga.

I would have bought the whole set right then and there, but since 3 was missing I didn't. I just grabbed Volume 1. And man, its pretty cool, though most of the people I talk to have always been all "ohh the Robotech sux0rs, Macross owns it" and etc.

Well.. since I seem to like the inferior version, surely the superior version is even better, right?

So, I have two things to ask:

What's so better about the Macross series v.s. Robotech, besides the well treaded "because"?

And, where can I find the entire set of either for fairly cheap and not ebay?

And why is it that every single time I watch a damn anime I want to make a mod out of it? I mean hell, it only happens with anime. I have no desire to make a Sopranos mod. Well okay, maybe just a little... ;)

    Ok quick history lesson.

    <img src='http://pics.xs.to/pics/04091/emot-eng101.gif' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
Robotech is a series which aired on American Television during the 80's, it is comprised of 3 ENTIRELY seperate series (Sort of, more on this in a second) with no continuity to it what-so-ever.

Those series are (In order as shown in Robotech):
    Super Dimensional Fortress Macross
    Genesis Climber Mospeada
    Super Dimensional Cavalry Southern Cross

TIDBIT: Macross and Southern Cross are 2 series that are part of a trilogy aired in Japan. The only similarities they share are the 'Super Dimensional' title and all have a futuristic setting. The 3rd is Super Dimensional Century Orguss

The reason many fans prefer the original Japanese versions, aside from the purity reasons, is that when they mashed all the series together to form Robotech they messed up plot for each and every series. Macross isn't affected nearly as bad as Mospeada and Southern Cross are, but the plot is still... lacking.

If you saw Robotech as a kid, and you enjoyed that. I recommend grabbing Robotech.
However, if you want to see the way these all originally aired and want the proper plot. I'd grab each series seperately.

    Now then. Onto DVDs.

Note that when you buy these. Robotech will come dubbed with NO Japanese audio. And Macross, Mospeada and Southern Cross will come subbed with NO English audio.

These are the CHEAPEST, LEGITIMATE prices I can find.
The reasion I am posting the Region 4's of all of the subbed versions is because Australia is releasing each series in boxes that look the same, are far sleeker than their American counterparts and have had years to correct horrible oversights in the Region 1 versions. Trust me, I owned the Macross R1's ages ago. They pale in comparison.

    Subbed:
    <a href='http://www.madman.com.au/catalogue/item.php?catalogue=MMB066' target='_blank'>SDF Macross</a> $150 Australian, Region 4

    <a href='http://www.dvdpacific.com/item.asp?ID=537711' target='_blank'>SDC Southern Cross</a> $58 US, Region 1
    <a href='http://www.madman.com.au/catalogue/item.php?catalogue=MMB084' target='_blank'>SDC Southern Cross</a> $100 Australian, Region 4

    <a href='http://www.dvdpacific.com/item.asp?ID=45171' target='_blank'>Genesis Climber Mospeda</a> $55 US, Region 1
    <a href='http://www.madman.com.au/catalogue/item.php?catalogue=MMB126' target='_blank'>Genesis Climber Mospeada</a> $100 Australian, Region 4 (Release date is the 20th of October)

Give me a minute or two and I'll find Robotech on DVD cheaply.

    Hm...

So, the Macross saga is the only one that has to do w/ the Zentradi, the transforming fighter jets, rick hunter & co? The other series are completel seperate in the same vein as how the american Super Mario Bros 2 was just a sprite & title switch from that one game?

If so, then my purchase may be even cheaper as I need only buy the Macross part. :P

Are there any good used DVD stores online? I'd prefer to save some cash and get a used copy of the series as opposed to paying more for the new copy.

Though also, I heard there was a digitally remastered version out there too. I wonder if its significantly better than the one I got, which looks a little better than a VHS tape.
    [edit]
n/m, the one you posted is a digitally remastered one

Hmmmm 2nd hand is a tough one.

Basically what I posted, especially the $150 Australian ($108 US) for Macross set is really as cheap as your going to get them

If you wanted to buy Macross over 3 seperate boxes, that's do-able for about $43 US each.

    But 2nd hand...
<a href='http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/offer-listing/B0000B1ODL/ref=dp_pb_a//102-9424129-9923319?condition=all' target='_blank'>Looking at Amazon</a> 2nd hand ones START at $44 each. So I can get you brand new discs for roughly the same price (Cheaper if you went with the Aussie one, and at better quality)

And yes, Macross is the ONLY series with the Zentradi, the Valkyries.
Rick Hunter's original name is Hikaru. So get used to it ;p

The other series are COMPLETELY seperate. I probably wouldn't recommend picking up Southern Cross or Mospeda unless you're a hardcore robotech fan or a complete nutjob like me.

Macross only it is then... Now, which one... Hmm...

I've only seen <s>Robotech</s>Macross dubbed, never subbed. From what I've seen on the first DVD, the dialog is okay and the storyline seems to make sense (for being the buchered version of course).

I think I'd rather see the original storyline as it was meant to be seen though. Cept I'm kinda getting tired of reading subtitles all the time in all honesty.

    hmmm

    Well it's up to you...

I personally recommend the uncut subbed version. I am a purist after all, and even though I both own Macross dubbed and subbed I'd still recommend the subbed version even if I wasn't.

Subbed is uncut, more violence, more plotline, etc
Has a better film transfer than Robotech does (I believe Australia used the British masters for their DVDs. So it really is of the highest quality)
It doesn't lead onto the next saga of Robotech (Sup kids, tune in next week!)

meh. Just buy subbed. I DEMAND IT.

Didn't you just spend a bunch of money at Best Buy on an impulse? Doom you're not getting near my moneys. On a different note, get the "butchered inferior dubbed craptastic OMG SUXOR TO THA MAX" version of Robotech, cause I grew up with it and it owns, and I can't believe you've never seen it before! Don't let the part where the jet was supposed to transform at 12:47:23 but transforms at 12:47:51 in the dub make you miss out on a part of 80's culture.
