    the black didnt show because it's an additive sprite, and black was probably the last color in your color table. the last color in the table is what HL considers the transparency. therefore, if you change the background to R255 G0 B255 (or anything, really - just something distinctly different), then set <i>that</i> color as the last in your color table, the black should show.

    yeah, it wouldn't matter. i got mixed up and told you wrong. the real deal is that the dark colors in additive sprites are transparent. the darker they are, the less opaque they are in·game. i was thinking of indexedalpha sprites earlier...
