200 Players....

the source engine can support 128 players and with a netcode tweak is suposed to be able to reach 256.

this got me thinking..(thinking wayyyy in the future here..)
imagine ns gone war style, with about 100 rines v 100 aliens.. with that amount of players it would have to be set outdoors on open plains, but i think it would be awsome, just amagine your a rine in your base and about 50 meters away you see about 60 skulks charge down over a hill...
reminds of the film starship troopers.

yeah, it aint gonna happen anytime soon, but mehhhhhhhhhh =)

    EDIT: I would expect the marines and aliens to start with a fluctuating amount of resource towers based on the number of players, for example, they automatically start with 1 for ever 6 people, and there are many more over the map that can be built.


    Such as, in a game of 60 vs. 60, both teams would start with 10 RTs, and there are still quite a few (around 50) left on the map...just an idea.

    No way, 64 would be too much already.

    You wil lget problems with
    - playtime, players would leave to go to the toiled or get some sleep.
    - streaaed commander, too much to care about.
    - the ns entity code, too much traffif for the server with all the tons of build structures.

    Ive had a lot of games were 256 was exactly the amount of build turrets or Offense chambers.

    According to this topic it'd be impossible. I'm a Starship Troopers fan myself and thaught that way 2 when I heard about ns.
    but read something about the NS world on www.natural-selection-org

    the frontiersmen are trained to operate with light equipment,without any further backup and a team with the max. number of 5-15 Marines.

    as i said this would be wayy in the future when the standered internet connection is better than what it is now, more powerfull servers etc etc, so it could be possable. and tot he last poster, this game would have a diff setting, thats why i said war style, this wouldnt be your normal ns game were a few rines try clear out a spaceship or a base =p

    The res system for aliens does seem to be a major problem in NS. Going off topic a bit, sry.

    Marine res system is like a big company, capitalism style. The money is gathered, and reinvested, which eventually earns more money. GG

    Alien res system is like communism, everyone gets the same amount except for the commie gorges, with are more equal than others. <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> "Lay off the crack kid"

    NS2 will be the war...

    There's no reason why the battle between the marines and the aliens haven't moved to the next level... of course if it was going to be battles of that scale, then the building system would change too. Maybe we would have real size buildings. And the turrets would be solitary big constructions of mass-destruction instead of small farms.

    But... *sigh*

    A standard 512 ADSL connection would not be able to handle more than 50 or so players.

    cool. you could do your egg's on the server motherboard. mm...burnt eggs....


    annyways. this would rule all. imagine. the kharaa have become entrenched in a hard underground bunker. nukes and nanites dont work to get them out. only one way to do it. large ground force, take out the 3 hives. 100 Marines. 100 aliens. 50 HMG's, 25 Gl's 25 LMG's. 50 onoii, 30 fades. 20 lerks. 3 hives. 1 winner. the hives healing you as you charge across the battle field towards the marine dropships under a hail of HMG fire. fades acid rocketing. lerks umbraing. everyone screaming, marines flying left right and center. the goring, the blood, the sheer thrill of it all.

    the smoke clears. the one fade. one jetpacker left. the ultimate battle. *blink swipe*

    ^terrorists win^

    Or...ya know...you could just get a quad Opteron server complete with 20 gigabytes of RAM running off of a T3 or better connection and then make massive optimization for netcode, rendering, and physics calculation and then we could have a massive campfest in which the marines' combined firepower would win the game at first blow wtihin a minute.

    Wait, I have an idea.

    Let's stick to regular NS.

    Games in which you have more than 64 players is unrealistic to expect many server cropping up, or we might see pay-to-play servers and that would just suck.

    Just to let ya'll know: HL2's code is actually unlimited. You can have several thousand if you've got the power in the server/code. Just saying.

    100 marines as commander is perfectly managable as long as res scales with the player count. I handle the 15 players in the max size pubs just fine, I dont think 100 would be much different.
