[sprel] -new Motion Tracking Sprite

simple, yet effective
just an experiment i put together in PS7 real quick. the word hostile is animated to scroll across the recticle whenever it locks on to an enemy. it gets a little crunchy when HL starts to enlarge it (as i suppose any sprite does) because i tried to keep the default sprite size in mind, and had to make the circle small to fit.

You need to center the circle, its off to the side :o

the circle is off to the bottom·left so i could fit it all into a sprite the same size as the default. for me, it's more than close enough. im not using it to aim, after all...

Fantastic concept lotus, looks great in game, even the text shows up great 90% of the time, and the other time the alien is too close for you to pay attention to it
Just a question though, i'm really really fond of the original MT sprite. I'm going to have a go at it now, but i'm sure you'd be alot more succesful, I was wondering if perhaps the original sprite could be resized to fit that blue circle in your sprite. (imo, it would be the pinnacle of sexiness)

Yea, i love this sprite, but when you jump around the corner to shoot the skulk on the circle, its not where its suppose to be because its off-center.

Just got off a siege game with this, great stuff. I guess it is sorta mis-leading benig off-center, but I didnt have any problems. Great great great stuff, I'm gonna have a go at adding a few touches probably, you're doing some great work, conversions and creations alike. Keep it up my man.

:O nice one lotus. im pretty sure you can deviate from the original size of the sprite so you can make it centered.

i would use it but, i have my own

Hrm, after spending the majority of a couple of hours working on this, this is the final thing that i came up with in regards to my comment before ^ (till i can be bothered going back and touching up a few things)

The inner red circle is constantly spinning, other than that the animation is exactly the same as lotus' (although i'm not too sure the larger circle pulls off as well as yours does lotus).

yeah it looks like you might've shrunk the outside recticle to one px thick instead of 2. that might be causes it to look a bit odd at certain distances. i had tried a thinner recticle initially, but those four flat pixels it puts on the sides to complete the circle looked weird to me when HL softened them in·game. im werking on another right now, sans recticle. as for your new animation: i thought about something like that, but i was just too lazy after putting in that hostile, heh. i'd like to see yours sometime. sounds awesome-

so lotus if u center it and give it the red circle spinning thingy, i will shine your shoes

Well, here it is, and yeah you are right l0tus, I shrunk the reticle, and i don't think it's quite what i'm after- i'll sit down when i get a chance and rework a similar one from scratch instead of using the default mt sprite. It's still fairly feasible, but i'd love to see what you come up with now

*edit* rofl would you believe it was 121k, 1k over the upload limit - here it is zipped.
If you want to use it anywhere, don't bother crediting me, credit l0tus and the NS team.

Well, I tried redoing this...hit some snags.

    Here's how it should look:

    Here's how it looks in-game:

I've already mirrored it so the text is correctly aligned, but the...blobbiness I can't figure out.

maybe try thinning and dimming the circles... if its too bright the anti-aliasing shows up all screwed.

Looks like the red circle is not perfectly in the center... more to the top. Maybe I just think that because I need to go to sleep... *passes out*

@Fox: i believe its the fact that you resized the default sprite's (canvas) area that made it blob out like that. thats why i was trying to use the default sprite size, as some people have commented on. i learned that when you change the actual size of a sprite that NS needs to rotate and resize (i.e. that ricochet spark we were talking about over at NSA), bad things can happen...

    Ahhhhh...thanks for the heads-up.

Hmmm...shame the MT sprite doesn't have a corresponding .txt file...

is there a way that u can fix the quality of it? the letters are fine but the circles are blocky
  • Fox_OneFox_One Join Date: 2003-01-15 Member: 12310Members
Look at the sprite. It's a pixel circle, no AA. It's designed that way.
