Saviors
Nancy calmly scanned the ground as she walked forward through the darkened hallways. She had been sent out over half an hour ago and heard small bits of traffic being echoed in her visor, via comm link with the rest of the marines.
She turned the corner quickly, and did a double check on her surroundings. When she saw no life signs, she continued at a slow pace. Her rifle was aimed forwards, the butt pressing against her shoulder in a rough fashion. She was tense, eager, and prepared. Intel had provided that the area was empty, and that even though viable nodes lay scattered through the area, there had been no contact.
Nancy’s view shifted to her right, where a vent lay nearby. She ducked a bit and had a peek inside, and from a distance. It was empty, and a red hue was being generated from a light bolted to the top. She stood back up, lifted her rifle back to her shoulders softly, and continued to walk.
She noticed a pile of rubble that lay scattered across the floor by a doorway. Inside of a small crevice, an object glistened in her visor. She moved towards it quickly, looked around, and then stooped down to get a closer look, and placed her rifle on the floor. She let her hands glide around the edges and pulled it closer. She raised her visor in an effort to get a better idea as to what it was.
It was a locket. A golden-colored locket with a clock still ticking inside. She wrapped her hands around the new treasure and placed it in a pouch. She fumbled with it at first, and when it finally opened, she began to place the locket inside. Then she heard a faint rumble. She didn’t look up right away, but instead put the locket inside slowly. The rumble continued, almost like the dying sound of a ship’s engines.
She looked up, her hands outstretched on the ground. With her visor still up, and her weapon on the ground, she was defenseless. When she met the eyes of the creature that created the sound, her look changed from curiosity to fear. She had met the glowing yellow eyes of a Kharaa Onos, and its breath was hot upon its slow release from its nostrils.
The Onos reared its head, snorted, and then let its mouth stretch open, revealing rows of teeth and a sticky throat that would have become her entry. Nancy screamed, fell backwards, and began to crawl away. The Onos began to tromp slowly towards her, her hands sliding across the metal floor, trying to get away. The Onos was now upon her, its mouth outstretched, ready for a pounce.
“Move! Move! Move!” a nearby voice echoed. Nancy looked back in a quick head-spin. A marine turned the corner and fired off a quick burst of heavy caliber fire from his machine gun. The bullets ripped across the Onos’s pale mane. It roared and reared back, feeling the lead pelt its way through the Onos’s hide. Another marine turned the corner, ducked, and began to fire along with his comrade standing nearby.
The Onos began to draw back into the shadows, but the marines didn’t seem intent on letting it leave alive. The marine standing up walked towards the fallen Nancy, and pulled a shotgun from his back that was held up by a strap. She gently took it, and seemed rather surprised that they had shown up just in time. More marines began to pour through the door, and they all lined up in the hall, hearing the Onos tear and moan as it tromped off through the complex. The Onos was loose, somewhere. They had to find it, and kill it.
--3 Hours Later—
<i>Log 27542 – Reports of Kharaa movement have ceased since the surprise attack on the larger Kharaa creature, known as the Onos, showed up in the halls of Primary Operations Complex Delta 10. Though the creature was eventually eliminated, it is known that it will be reincarnated as a lower life form at some point during our stay here.
Lieutenant Nancy will given two weeks of leave after returning to her squad after her frightful experience, and helping to track down the Kharaa infestation and destroy its primary unit of operation. The thought of getting up and continuing to fight baffles even myself. End of log.
